Task: install a homemade engine preheater 220V on UAZ 31512

The progress of work on installing a homemade preheater 220V for UAZ 31512

Installed on the frame below the coolant drain valve from the block. I had a special bracket on the frame. To him and pulled the collar.

View from the side of the cooling radiator

Instead, the tap screwed in a fitting with a K1 / 4 thread - this is a cold coolant intake.

At first, he planned to bring the supply of heated coolant to the block, there above oil filter there is a plug for fitting K1 / 2 ...

It should have turned out like this

... but I failed to unscrew it and had to connect it through a tee to a hose that goes from the block head to the stove radiator.

Filled drained antifreeze + about a liter more. Started, drove the system from air jams.
In the morning, after a night frost, I turned on the heating. after 2-3 minutes the hose from the heater is already warm. After half an hour, the head of the block warmed up. 40 minutes later the block itself.
Now the engine starts with half a turn, like in summer, and does not troit the first 5 seconds, as before.

I'm posting a short report on my work.
The temperature after spending the night is -4.7 degrees. It was possible not to heat, but the device was at hand and decided to take a measurement.

We turn on the heater and after 20 minutes the block head warmed up to +12.2 degrees

Installation and operation:

Installation:

The electric heater must not touch the engine body and other parts of the vehicle.

The electric heater must be installed in a vertical position with the outlet pipe upwards, while a slight inclination is allowed (no more than 15°).

Cut the sleeve into lengths: inlet sleeve 400 mm, output 230 mm. Fasten the bracket to the heater with studs using washers and nuts. Put the sleeves on the respective heater pipes and secure the connections with clamps.
Open the drain cock and drain the coolant. Open the drain cock. Unscrew the plug with the K1/2 thread from the engine block on the right side in the direction of the vehicle. Clean holes. Loosen the engine foot mounting bolt on the right side of the vehicle.
Apply sealant to the threads of the K1 / 4 fitting and screw it in instead of the drain cock.
Apply sealant to the threads of the K1 / 2 fitting and screw it in instead of the plug.
Fix the bracket with the heater with the engine foot bolt.
Put a collar on the output sleeve. Put the outlet sleeve on the K1/2 fitting and secure the connection with a clamp. Pour 250 ml of coolant through the inlet hose into the heater. Put the inlet sleeve on the fitting with K1/4 thread and secure the connection with a clamp. Fill the cooling system.
The mains cable should be laid and fixed with straps to ensure its safety from mechanical damage, as well as to exclude possible contact with moving and heating parts of the engine.
Check connections for coolant leaks, repair if any. Start the engine for 3-5 minutes, and after stopping the engine, add coolant to the required level.
Preparing for the first run:

Fill cooling system, check connections for leaks.
Start the car engine and let it run for 5-10 minutes. Then stop the engine and add coolant if necessary.
Connect the electric heater to the network.
After 2-5 minutes of operation of the electric heater, check the inlet and outlet sleeves. The outlet sleeve must be warmer than the inlet.
Precautionary measures:

The heater may only be operated after the engine has warmed up to operating temperature (the thermostat must be open) and after checking the efficiency of the passenger compartment heater. This must be done to eliminate air pockets in the cooling system.
It is forbidden to use electrical extension cords without a ground wire and rated for current less than 15 A.
It is forbidden to turn on the electric heater with the cover removed.
Do not use the heater if there is no coolant in it.

Seeking funds to ensure an easy start power plant at low temperatures, many car owners opt for antifreeze preheaters operating from a 220 V network. In such devices, powerful heating elements provide enough fast warm-up motor in winter.

At the same time, motorists often prefer such domestic-made devices, among which is the Alliance preheater.

Such a decision is often due to the fact that domestic devices are cheaper than foreign ones, with tolerable build quality and acceptable performance of their functions.

This manufacturer has appeared on the market for equipment for heating power plants for a long time, and its products are in demand.

Types of heaters, features

The company offers a range of models with different designs and technical specifications. In most cases, the devices are designed for use on domestic cars and trucks- VAZ, GAZ, UAZ, GAZelle, etc. But at the same time, the installation of the Alliance heater is quite possible on foreign cars.

The catalog of preheaters of this company includes models:

"Alliance-2-PC"

The only tank-type model on the list, which includes a pump that circulates coolant through the system during heater operation. Due to this, it provides more uniform heating of the cylinder block. The equipment is vertical. The power of the heating element is 2 kW;

This model comes in two types - 1.5 and 2.0 kW. Outwardly, it is identical to the model with a pump, but this version does not have a pump. Fluid circulation - gravity;

"Alliance -07"

Horizontal model of the flow type with a perpendicular arrangement of conclusions. Designed for installation on cars, the design of which uses a shortened cooling system return pipe and an angled supply of antifreeze to the thermostat housing (VAZ classic models and some front-wheel drive models). The power of the heating element is only 0.7 kW, so it is more suitable for maintaining the temperature, rather than heating the coolant;

"Alliance-08" and "08 Universal"

Flow model with horizontal pin position. The first version is designed for installation on GAZ vehicles, while the second one is universal and can be used on foreign cars. Heater power - 0.8 kW;

Horizontal model of tank type with perpendicular terminals and power of 3 kW. This heater is designed for use with truck engines;

The type of device affects the principle of operation. If everything is clear with a tank heater equipped with a pump - when turned on, the pump provides circulation, then gravity ones should be considered in more detail, since the scheme of its operation is quite interesting.

Design and principle of operation

The design of the device "Alliance 1.5" consists of a housing with two outlets - a supply side and a central outlet. This case plays the role of a reservoir, so a heating element is placed inside it. The outputs of the heating element pass through the bottom cover, where it is connected to the power cable. Additionally, a thermostat is used in the design, which turns on / off the device when a certain temperature is reached (the upper limit is 85 degrees C, and the lower limit is 50 degrees C).

To ensure the gravity flow of the coolant, a ball valve is installed in the underwater outlet.

It works like this: initially the valve is open, so the tank is filled with antifreeze from the system. As the coolant is heated by the heating element, it begins to expand, causing the valve to shut off the flow. Further expansion causes the already heated antifreeze to be pushed out through the central (drain) outlet. A pressure drop occurs inside the housing and the valve opens again, starting the next portion of the coolant.

As for the flow models, they are a regular tube in which a heating element is installed. In such devices, gravity circulation is carried out due to the temperature difference.

Wiring diagrams

Each type of model has its own connection diagram, which must be followed, otherwise antifreeze circulation will not be provided (applies to gravity models).

There may be several options for inserting a heater into the system. For example, on some cars, a classic connection scheme is used, in which the fluid is supplied from the hole for the drain plug (a fitting is installed instead), and the outlet leads to the upper pipe coming from the radiator (the insert is made using a tee).

But more often a slightly different connection scheme is used. In it, the supply of antifreeze is done through the same drain plug, but the drain is made into the hole of the temperature sensor of the cylinder block. For such a connection, a tee fitting is included with the device. It is screwed in instead of the temperature sensor. The sensor itself is then screwed into the end of the fitting, and the pipe from the heater is put on the side outlet of the tee.

As for the flow models, their installation is much easier, since they simply cut into the required pipe of the cooling system.

In general, installation work should not cause difficulties, since nothing needs to be redone, it is enough just to make a tie-in correctly.

Finally, a little about the operation of the device. After connecting the heater to the cooling system, the device itself (reservoir type) must be fixed to the engine (a bracket is included for this)

All pipes and wiring coming from the equipment should be laid in such a way that they do not touch moving elements that become very hot during the operation of the power plant.

Although all Alliance models are equipped with a thermostat, you should not rely on it alone. Therefore, it is better to connect the device to the power supply through an adapter with a timer.

Even in the warm season, do not forget about the upcoming operation of the car in the winter. In the harsh season, the installation of a 220V engine heater will become reliable and in a simple way prepare the car for a cold start.

Purpose and main differences

The starting engine heater is designed to maintain the required temperature of the coolant at a certain level. For example, a temperature of 40°C will provide the necessary conditions in the cylinder for a quick start of the motor, regardless of external conditions.

Structurally, the electric heater is an affordable design compared to independent engine start devices. A conventional heater with the prefix "electro" is a heating element with power wires placed in the body of the engine.
Among the advantages of such a device are:

  1. Simple design which will allow you to install on your own.
  2. low cost, which is due to the design features.
  3. Possibility of a later upgrade. If necessary for passenger cars mobiles, it will be possible to add a timer, a fuse sensor and other optional devices.

Before proceeding with the installation of an engine heater from a fixed 220V network, get acquainted with design features. The design is based on a tungsten heating coil with placement in the cylinder block. Depending on the power, a small amount of antifreeze can be heated relatively quickly.

The main disadvantage is the high energy consumption. In just one night, individual models consume up to 10 kW of electricity. That is why progressive samples are equipped with sensors for periodically disconnecting the device from the network.

It should be noted that the type of engine does not affect the performance of the device. Is a petrol or diesel engine on UAZ, the device is installed in the same way. Here the difference is not as great as matching the size of tires and wheels for SUVs. With a certain skill and compliance with safety measures, it is not difficult to assemble an engine preheater with your own hands. To avoid unsuccessful experiments, consider the example of the original 220 V car heater.

An example of a homemade heater

The principle of operation of the heater is based on the free circulation of coolant in a closed circuit of the cooling system. A device for heating the liquid is built in parallel to the radiators. An additional pump will provide accelerated circulation of the liquid, where the natural speed of the liquid will not be enough.

In order to make an electric engine heater on your own, you will need:

  1. Piece of pipe. At one end, you will need a hole for installing a heating element. At different ends of the pipe, holes are prepared for installing fittings.
  2. Electric heater. Power is selected taking into account the size of the engine and the capacity of the lubrication system - from 400W to 2kW.
  3. Two fittings, taking into account the diameters of the pipes of the cooling system.
  4. Piece of cable and plug for connecting the heating element to a 220V network.

For the assembled structure, it is required to provide installation at an angle. This will allow the movement of antifreeze. Additionally, before installing the heater, provide its thermal insulation.

Examples of industrial devices

Serial production of 220V engine heaters has been established both for domestic models and for installation on any car. For installation on the VAZ model, preheaters of the following models are suitable:

  1. Device "Homeless child". The model is designed for installation on cars of the Volga Automobile Plant, taking into account the size of the nozzles. The cost does not exceed 1.3 thousand rubles.
  2. Product "Start mini". It has a simple design with the creation of a natural thermosiphon circulation in the circuit. The cost is about 1,000 rubles. It has several modifications for installation on different motors.
  3. Start-type models - M1 / M2, Siberia-M also provide engine heating for domestic models. Price range from 1000 to 1800 rubles.

Among the new generation models, Severs-M heaters are distinguished, which are equipped with an emergency switch and are adapted to some popular models of foreign manufacturers.

If you need to choose a 220V engine preheater, you should pay attention to the products of Hotstart from the USA. Here you can find models of varying degrees of complexity:

  1. TPS line. It has a wide range of vertical models, depending on the diameter of the nozzle at the thermostat, or are available with a built-in thermostat. Differ in compactness and maintainability.
  2. Line of devices type CB, SB, CL, WL, EE. It features a horizontal layout, power from 1.5 to 5 kW, and is designed for installation with motors from 2.0 liters to 10.0 liters.
  3. Model type HOTflow . If you need to install an efficient heater with a pump, you should pay attention to the devices of this group. The power of the samples is in the range from 1 to 144 kW.

Recently, the installation of an engine preheater has become possible with models Chinese manufacturers. Moreover, such products are often equipped with special sockets. Those who have installed budget models know that the main inconvenience of 220V heaters is the need to open the hood every time they are connected. That is why the choice is often made in favor of an autonomous heater. Therefore, a remote outlet is a significant advantage of some models.

220 V heater installation procedure

The easiest solution to install a heater is to contact a service station. The cost of work in this case will not exceed 1.5 thousand rubles. However, in practice, self-installation is no more difficult than starting a two-stroke engine.

In general, the algorithm of work for installing engine heating for passenger cars looks like this:

  1. Drain antifreeze. The entire volume does not need to be removed - about 2 liters are drained and collected in a separate container.
  2. Detach flexible hoses at the installation site.
  3. The heater is being installed with connection to a closed circuit, in compliance with design features.
  4. Final assembly. The stage provides for reliable fixation of pipes, power supply sockets.
  5. Topping up the coolant level.

At the final stage, it is necessary to check not only the operability of the device, but also the normal functioning of the cooling system as a whole. After that, be sure that the car is ready for winter operation.

ATTENTION! Installation of electric heater Siberia for UAZ vehicles with a UMZ 414,417,421 carburetor engine, it is recommended to be carried out by specialists at a service station.

Before starting the installation and operation of the electric heater Siberia, carefully read the installation manual.
