What kind of oil to pour into the gur. Changing the oil in a VAZ power steering on your own is difficult, but possible. What can you put in a VAZ 2110 power steering?

10.10.2020

What kind of oil should I put in the power steering? This question interests car owners in different cases (when changing fluid, when buying a car, before the cold season, and so on). Japanese manufacturers allow automatic transmission fluid (ATF) to be filled into the power steering system. But European ones indicate that it is necessary to pour special fluids (PSF). Externally they differ in color. Based on these main and additional features, which we will consider below, it is precisely possible to determine what kind of oil to put in the power steering.

Types of power steering fluids

Before answering the question of what kind of power steering oil, you need to determine the existing types of these fluids. Historically, it has happened that car enthusiasts distinguish them only by color, although this is not entirely correct. After all, it is more technically competent to pay attention to the tolerances that power steering fluids have. In particular:

  • viscosity;
  • mechanical properties;
  • hydraulic properties;
  • chemical composition;
  • temperature characteristics.

Therefore, when choosing, first of all, you need to pay attention to the listed characteristics, and then to the color. In addition, the following oils are currently used in power steering:

  • Mineral. Their use is due to the presence of a large number of rubber parts in the power steering system - o-rings, oil seals and other things. In severe frosts and extreme heat, rubber may crack and lose its performance properties. To prevent this from happening, they use mineral oils, which the best way protect rubber products from the listed harmful factors.
  • Synthetic. The problem with their use is that they contain rubber fibers, which are harmful to the rubber sealing products present in the system. However, modern automakers have begun to add silicone to rubber, which neutralizes the effect of synthetic fluids. Accordingly, the scope of their use is constantly growing. When buying a car, be sure to read in the service book what kind of oil to pour into the power steering. If there is no service book, call official dealer. In any case, you need to know clear tolerances for the possibility of using synthetic oil.

Let us list the advantages and disadvantages of each of the mentioned types of oils. So, on to the benefits mineral oils applies:

  • gentle effect on rubber products of the system;
  • low price.

Disadvantages of mineral oils:

  • significant kinematic viscosity;
  • high tendency to form foam;
  • short service life.

Advantages fully synthetic oils:

Differences in color between different oils

  • long service life;
  • stable operation in any temperature conditions;
  • low viscosity;
  • the highest lubricating, anti-corrosion, antioxidant and foam-suppressing properties.

Disadvantages of synthetic oils:

  • aggressive effect on rubber parts of the power steering system;
  • approval for use in a limited number of vehicles;
  • high price.

As for the common color gradation, automakers offer the following power steering fluids:

  • Of red color. It is considered the most advanced because it is created on the basis of synthetic materials. Refers to Dexron, which represent the ATF class - transmission fluids for automatic transmissions (Automatic Transmission Fluid). These oils are often used in automatic transmissions transmission However, they are not suitable for all vehicles.
  • Yellow color. Such fluids can be used for automatic transmissions and power steering. They are usually made based on mineral components. Their manufacturer is the German concern Daimler. Accordingly, these oils are used in cars produced by this concern.
  • Green color. This composition is also universal. However, it can only be used with manual transmission and as a power steering fluid. The oil can be made from mineral or synthetic components. Usually more viscous.

Many automakers use the same oil for automatic transmissions and power steering. In particular, these include companies from Japan. And European manufacturers require that a special fluid be used in hydraulic boosters. Many consider this a simple marketing ploy. Regardless of the type, all power steering fluids perform the same tasks. Let's take a closer look at them.

Functions of power steering fluids

The functions of power steering oils include:

  • transfer of pressures and forces between the working bodies of the system;
  • lubrication of power steering components and mechanisms;
  • anti-corrosion function;
  • transfer of thermal energy to cool the system.

Hydraulic oils for power steering contain the following additives:

PSF fluid for power steering

  • reducing friction;
  • viscosity stabilizers;
  • anti-corrosion substances;
  • acidity stabilizers;
  • coloring compounds;
  • antifoam additives;
  • compositions for protecting rubber parts of the power steering mechanism.

ATF oils perform the same functions, but their differences are as follows:

  • they contain additives that increase the static friction of clutches, as well as reduce their wear;
  • The different fluid compositions are due to the fact that clutches are made of different materials.

Any power steering fluid is created on the basis of a base oil and a certain amount of additives. Due to their differences, the question often arises as to whether different types of oils can be mixed.

The answer to this question is simple - the fluid that your car manufacturer recommends. And it is unacceptable to conduct experiments here. The fact is that if you constantly use oil that is not suitable in composition for your power steering, then over time there is a high probability of complete failure of the hydraulic booster.

Therefore, when choosing which fluid to pour into the power steering, the following factors must be taken into account:

GM ATF Dexron III

  • Automaker recommendations. There is no need to engage in amateur activities and pour anything into the power steering system.
  • Mixing is permissible only with similar compositions. However, it is not advisable to use such mixtures for a long time. As soon as possible, replace the fluid with the one recommended by the manufacturer.
  • The oil must withstand significant temperatures. Indeed, in the summer they can warm up to +100°C and above.
  • The liquid must be sufficiently fluid. Otherwise, there will be an excessive load on the pump, which will lead to its premature failure.
  • The oil must have a significant service life. Typically, replacement is carried out after 70...80 thousand kilometers or once every 2-3 years, whichever comes first.

Also, many car owners are interested in questions about whether it is possible to fill transmission oil? Or engine oil? As for the second, it’s worth saying right away - no. But as for the first ones, they can be used, but with certain reservations.

The most common are two types of fluids - Dexron and Power Steering Fuel (PSF). Moreover, the first one is more common. Currently, fluids that meet the Dexron II and Dexron III standards are mainly used. Both compounds were originally developed by General Motors. is currently produced under license by numerous manufacturers. They differ from each other in the temperature range of use. The German concern Daimler, which includes the world famous Mercedes-Benz, has developed its own power steering fluid, which is yellow in color. However, there are many companies in the world that produce such compounds under license.

Is it possible to mix power steering fluids?

What should you do if you do not have the brand of fluid that your car's power steering system uses? You can mix similar compositions, provided that they belong to the same type ( “synthetics” and “mineral water” should not be mixed under any circumstances). In particular, yellow and red oils are compatible. Their compositions are similar, and they will not harm the power steering. However, it is not recommended to drive this mixture for a long time. As soon as possible, replace your power steering fluid with the one recommended by your car manufacturer.

And here green oil cannot be added to red or yellow oil in no case. This is due to the fact that synthetic and mineral oils cannot be mixed with each other.

Liquids can be conditionally divide into three groups, within which it is permissible to mix them with each other. The first such group includes “conditionally mixed” light-colored mineral oils(red, yellow). The figure below shows samples of oils that can be mixed with each other if there is an equal sign opposite them. However, as practice shows, mixing oils between which there is no equal sign is also acceptable, although undesirable.

The second group includes dark mineral oils(green), which can only be mixed with each other. Accordingly, they cannot be mixed with liquids from other groups.

The third group also includes synthetic oils, which can only be mixed with each other. However, it is worth paying attention that such oils should be used in the power steering system only if specified. clearly stated in the manual for your car.

Mixing fluids most often occurs when adding oil to the system. And this must be done when its level drops, including due to leakage. The signs described below will tell you about this.

Signs of a power steering fluid leak

There are several simple signs of a power steering fluid leak. By their appearance, you can judge that it is time to change or top up. And this action is associated with choice. So, signs of a leak include:

  • decrease in fluid level in expansion tank power steering systems;
  • the appearance of drips on the steering rack, under the rubber seals or on the oil seals;
  • a knocking sound in the steering rack when driving:
  • to turn the steering wheel, you need to apply more effort;
  • the power steering system pump began to make extraneous noise;
  • There was significant play in the steering wheel.

If at least one of the listed symptoms appears, it is necessary to check the fluid level in the tank. And if necessary, replace or top up. However, before doing this, you should decide which liquid to use for this.

You cannot operate a car without power steering fluid, since this is not only harmful to it, but also unsafe for you and the people and cars around you.

Results

Thus, the answer to the question of which power steering oil is best to use will be information from the automaker of your car. Do not forget that you can mix red and yellow liquids, but they must be of the same type (only synthetics or only mineral water). Also, add or completely change power steering oil on time. It is very harmful for him to have a situation where there is not enough fluid in the system. And check the condition of the oil periodically. Do not allow it to darken significantly.

As practice shows, such a procedure as changing the oil in the power steering of a VAZ 2112 is little familiar to most motorists. What can I say, many do not consider it necessary to waste their time and money on servicing a unit that works without any comments, with constant accuracy and without extraneous sounds.
Such thoughts, as a rule, lead to disastrous results and the cost of the car owner's irresponsibility may not be comparable to the cost of periodic maintenance.
In order for you to understand how important it is to change the power steering oil of the VAZ 2112, I suggest you familiarize yourself in general terms with the structure of this complex and expensive unit.

Design and principle of operation

Purpose

Modern automotive industry has long moved from pure mechanics in mechanism control drives to amplifiers of various types: hydraulic, pneumatic and electric. Steering gear modern car It is equipped with amplifiers of both electric and hydraulic types, which greatly facilitate driving a car by reducing the gear ratios in the steering mechanism.
The power steering faces several difficult and very important tasks:

  • Due to the elastic properties of the liquid, it absorbs shock load received from road unevenness (affects the straightness of movement);
  • By adjusting the pressure, change the force applied to the steering wheel by the driver (promotes “steering feel”).

Design

The steering mechanism, which has a hydraulic booster, consists of:

  • Power steering pump and container with hydraulic fluid. The pump is driven by the engine crankshaft via a drive belt;
  • The steering mechanism itself, consisting of a spool-type control unit and a hydraulic cylinder made in one housing;
  • Low and high pressure pipelines connecting them.

Principle of operation

This system uses a vane type pump.

Pump

When the shaft rotates, the blades move along the “ellipse” body of the pump stator, pressing against it due to the centrifugal force created by the rotation of the shaft. The elliptical shape of the stator, in turn, allows you to change the volume of fluid between the blades and the housing, which creates significant pressure.
That is, when the volume is large, the pump “suction” occurs, while the liquid “pressure” decreases.
Since the pump is driven by the engine crankshaft, its performance is directly dependent on engine speed. A constant design pressure is provided by the discharge valve.

Steering gear

During linear motion, all system valves are closed, and the liquid circulates along the circuit without entering the power cylinder or any of its chambers. By applying force to the steering wheel, through the twisting torsion bar of the spool chamber, one of the chambers (left or right) opens and the fluid, being pumped, helps the driver turn the steering wheel.

The spool rotates relative to its body by twisting the torsion shaft. This action creates elasticity and responsiveness of the steering, without which driving the car would become unpredictable and less comfortable.
The angle of rotation of the spool directly depends on the forces applied to the steering wheel - the more forces, the greater the angle of rotation, which means the greater the amount of oil passing through the distributor.
I hope you now understand the importance of the quality of the oil in the power steering system of the VAZ 2112 and that timely Maintenance the above devices cannot be delayed. Next, we present to your attention instructions on how to change the oil in the hydraulic power steering system of your car yourself.

Changing the power steering oil

Before starting work, you need to find out what brand and type of hydraulic oil is used in the power steering system in your car. I would like to note that this procedure is not complicated at all and will not take you much time.
So:

  • We hang up the front of the car, not forgetting to place reliable stops under the sills;

Attention! Also, do not forget to put wheel chocks under the rear wheels of the car and set the parking brake.

  • Using a syringe and an extension attached to it, we pump out all the liquid from the tank;

Advice! After the liquid in the tank has run out, turn the steering wheel all the way to the left (it will be squeezed out of the working cylinder into the tank) and to the right until the liquid in the tank stops appearing.

  • Then, fill the hydraulic fluid into the reservoir to the maximum level and begin to pump the steering wheel all the way left and right, adding the required amount of oil in the process;
  • We start the car and repeat the operation of turning the steering wheel;
  • The final “touch” is bleeding the system, that is, removing air from it, for which, with the car turned off, we turn the steering wheel from lock to lock 10 times in each direction.

In addition to this method, hydraulic fluid can be replaced by displacing the old fluid with a new one. This method is considered more effective, since it allows you to completely get rid of the remnants of used oil, although you will need twice as much of it.
The essence of this method is as follows:

  • We pump out the liquid from the tank “according to the old scheme”;
  • Remove the return hose from the tank and “plug” the released fitting;
  • We take the “return” hose to the side, under the bottom of the car, into a previously prepared container, having previously extended it with an additional hose;
  • We pour the liquid into the tank and start the engine, as soon as the liquid is gone we turn it off;
  • We repeat this procedure until clean oil flows from the return hose into the prepared container.

Advice! In this case, it is best to work with an assistant, since there is a high risk of the tank emptying and air being captured by the pump, and it will simply be more convenient and faster.

  • Finally, we put the return hose on the tank fitting and bring the hydraulic fluid level to the desired level.

After changing the oil in the power steering of a VAZ 2112, pay attention to how much easier the steering wheel has become to rotate, and how much “softer” the power pump has become.
I would like to remind you once again that you do not forget to periodically replace the hydraulic fluid in the power steering system and change it every 30,000 kilometers or every two years of vehicle operation.

So I decided to change the oil in the power steering, after 5 years of operation it became completely black.

First, you need to raise the front of the car to make it easier to turn the wheels and thereby expel old oil from the system, I lifted it with 2 jacks.
To pump out oil from the tank, I bought a 20-gauge syringe and connected it to a piece of plastic tube from the washer; you can use a tube from the system or something else, as you like.
I made sure to cover the belts, they don’t like oil and deteriorate a lot, I used a regular rag, but I think it would be better to use some kind of bag. We begin to pump out the oil into any convenient container.
After the oil in the tank has run out, we ask a friend to turn the steering wheel making full turns, and we see how oil appears in the tank again, we begin to pump it out again. This procedure with turning the steering wheel could have been omitted, but since I did it the first time, I did it according to the instructions found on the Internet. Next, I disconnected the return hose, took a smaller bottle, cut a hole in it and directed the hose into it. Again we ask a friend to turn the steering wheel, and we see how the system expels the remaining oil. As a result, we see how much oil was pumped out and what color it is.
We connect the hose back to the tank, I immediately changed the clamp because... The old one stopped tightening. It seems like it costs 10 rubles. We fill in new oil almost to the brim of the tank. I bought Febi for 370 rubles, an analogue of Pentosin. Of course, Pentosin is better, but it costs more than 700 rubles and for the first time in the form of flushing the system it will do just fine, because... To solve the problem with the humming of the power steering pump and vibration when turning the steering wheel, it is necessary to replace the return hose with a new type hose, but I have not found it yet, then in the future I will change the oil again.
As soon as the oil is poured into the reservoir, ask your friend to turn the steering wheel again, the oil will begin to flow into the system. As soon as it is gone, add oil and ask a friend to start the engine for 5-10 seconds, at this moment we observe how the oil begins to leave again and add it if necessary. We turn off the engine and turn the steering wheel again, making 5-7 full revolutions and observing how bubbles of air expelled from the system appear in the barrel. Add oil if necessary to the required level and enjoy the work done.
You can also rinse the tank, because... the filter there is probably dirty, but I'll do that next time.

Power steering VAZ

Latest models VAZ cars are equipped with power steering - power steering. Its task is to ensure driving safety by reducing the effort on the steering wheel. In addition to this, the power steering has other functions:

  • Reduces the steering gear ratio, which improves vehicle maneuverability.
  • When driving on a country road, the shock to your hands will be less. If the front wheel breaks while driving, control over the car is maintained.
  • If the device fails, driving the car is possible.

Changing the oil in the power steering on a VAZ 2110 is carried out when there is an oil leak or the expiration date according to technical maintenance, which is 60,000 kilometers of the car or three years of its operation. Doing a timely oil change yourself will allow you to keep the complex power steering unit in working condition for a long time.

Main components of the device:

Steering device

  • Booster pump and fluid container. The pump operates from the engine crankshaft through a drive belt.
  • Steering gear. It consists of a hydraulic cylinder and a spool-type control unit located in one housing.
  • The devices are connected by high and low pressure pipelines.

The operation of the hydraulic booster is as follows:

  • When the torsion shaft is twisted relative to its body, the spool rotates. This creates elasticity, which responds to the steering and makes it more comfortable.
  • The angle of rotation of the spool depends on the force applied to the steering wheel. Increasing the steering force increases the steering angle, which allows more oil to pass through the unit's distributor. The better the lubricating fluid, the more reliable the operation of the unit.

Changing the oil in the hydraulic booster

Oils for the power steering system differ in viscosity, base type, and additives. The car care instructions suggest that changing VAZ 2110 power steering oil should be done with mineral oil. Existing synthetic oils have a poor impact on the durability of natural rubber-based rubber parts due to their chemical aggressiveness. Synthetic oils It can be poured into the power steering system if its parts are made of a special rubber composition, which is intended for synthetic oils.

Changing the VAZ 2112 power steering oil should begin with determining the brand and type hydraulic oil used in a car. The replacement process itself will take a little time, and the price of the work will be reasonable.

So:

  • The front wheels are raised so that they are both in the air.

Tip: To stabilize the car, you need to place reliable stops under its rear wheels and secure the car. hand brake.

  • All liquid is pumped out of the tank. To do this, use a syringe with an extension attached, as shown in the photo.

Pumping out liquid from the tank

Tip: When pumping out fluid when there is no more fluid in the tank, you need to turn the steering wheel all the way to the left, this will squeeze the oil into the tank from the working cylinder, then to the right. These steps must be repeated until liquid no longer appears in the tank.

  • New oil is poured into the tank to the maximum level. The steering wheel turns all the way left and right. As necessary, add the required amount of oil.
  • The VAZ engine starts and the steering wheel turns are repeated.
  • Replacing power steering oil on a VAZ 2112 ends with bleeding the system, which removes air from it. The operation is performed by turning the steering wheel 10 times from lock to lock in each direction.

Hydraulic fluid can be replaced by replacing old oil with new oil. This method is more effective, it allows you to completely get rid of the remnants of previously used oil, but you will need almost twice as much liquid, which increases the cost of the work. In this case:

  • A container is installed under the bottom of the car to drain used oil.
  • According to the previous scheme, oil is pumped out of the tank.
  • The hose for return flow is removed from the tank, and the fitting for its fastening is plugged.
  • The hose, previously extended with an additional piece, is moved to the side.
  • New fluid is poured into the reservoir and the engine starts. After there is no more liquid in the tank, the engine turns off.
  • The operation is repeated until the hose exits into the container to return clean oil.

Advice: To carry out the work you need to use the services of an assistant. This will prevent the risk of emptying the reservoir, which could cause the pump to trap air.

  • Place the return hose onto the tank fitting and bring the hydraulic fluid level to the required level.

How to change the oil in the power steering system of a VAZ 2112 can be clearly seen in the video. After correctly changing the oil in the power steering system, the steering wheel will turn much easier, and the power steering pump will work “softer”.

Hydraulic power steering (power steering).

There is an opinion that over the course of many years of owning various types of cars, including imported ones, car owners are able to carry out many scheduled fluid changes on their own, without resorting to the services of service station specialists.

That’s how it is, by and large, and it’s no secret that today you can find a lot of useful and comprehensive information on the Internet. However, one constant BUT remains - the lack of experience and qualifications of the car owner. And there is often so much information that finding the right solution sometimes becomes an unrealistic and impossible task.

How often do car owners themselves replace power steering fluid in their garage? Yes, in fact, it’s trivial - you buy power steering fluid, disconnect the return hose from the power steering reservoir, hang the front wheels on a jack (in order to reduce the load on the steering wheel when rotating), and the “happy car owner” begins to turn the steering wheel left and right, trying to squeeze out any remaining liquid. Eventually the liquid stops flowing out of the hose. Hurray, all the liquid has been drained. The return rod returns to its rightful place, and fresh fluid is poured into the tank. We turned the steering wheel and added a little more fluid. EVERYTHING, the replacement was completed successfully, everything in the system is clean and perfect. Moreover, in case of an emergency, there was more than half a liter left in the glass. No matter how it is.........

I specifically wrote the phrase “Happy car owner” in quotation marks. Because there is no happiness in such a replacement. Few people know that about 1 liter of fluid is poured into the power steering. And with the replacement method described above, the old and often very dirty liquid will not come out completely, but only partially. Most of it will remain in the system and simply mix with the new one. As a result, after a very short period of time, the car owner will be able to notice that the liquid has very quickly darkened and again acquired a dirty tint. And dirt becomes the cause of malfunction and breakdown in the first place, and subsequently very expensive repairs.

Another equally common way is to do the same procedure that I described above, but with the engine running. Allegedly, a working power steering pump will squeeze out the dirty fluid completely. All that remains is to fill it with fresh water and enjoy the comfort. Another misconception. As soon as you start the engine, the power steering pump will spit out fluid in a split second, leaving the entire power steering system unlubricated and full of air. You simply won’t have time to add liquid to the tank. And airing the power steering system, as a rule, leads to a very quick breakdown. OPERATING POWER GEAR WITH A LACK OF FLUID IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED!!! IT IS PROHIBITED TO CHANGE THE LIQUID IN THIS METHOD!!!

Why else does the drain/fill fluid replacement system not give the desired result? DIRT! During operation, dust gets into various vehicle systems in one way or another. Various deposits are formed that migrate throughout the system. The fluid replacement described above does not provide any guarantee that these deposits will be removed from the system when the old fluid is drained.

I perfectly understand car owners, because I am one myself, that such fluid replacements are, first of all, about SAVING money. Because, whatever one may say, a car requires certain financial costs. Believe me, this is an imaginary feeling of saving and only at first glance. Because the savings often lead to even greater costs - when components and assemblies fail, or when they break down. Don't skimp on your car. This will help you avoid many unpleasant moments and considerable repair costs in the future.

What kind of oil to add to the power steering, VAZ 2111 | Topic author: Vladislav

Nikolay  it says ZF on the lid, so they fill it

Raisa  I don’t know about 2111, but in Lanos I poured oil for the Castrol automatic gearbox Veronica and Narmonek. I think it’s the same here. in general it should be written in the manual

Diana  The power steering system of VAZ 2110 - 2111 is filled with a liquid of the type: Pentosin CHF11S, in an amount of 1.6-1.7 liters. During operation, top up to the maximum level using the dipstick on the tank lid.

Ivan  Look at the color of your liquid. There may be two options. Either red, then Dexron, Gregory, or green, then Pentosin Pavel or an analogue.
