Power steering VAZ

Many people today use a VAZ 2110. Not everyone knows which power steering oil to choose. Correct operation of the GRU ensures that operating the machine is a comfortable and safe process. However, in order for the hydraulic booster to function normally, it must be serviced on time. Most often, the manufacturer gives advice on the oil that needs to be used for the normal operation of this system. The brand of power steering oil for the VAZ 2110 is of great importance. However, most drivers remember the need to change the oil only after the GRU fails.

Signs of breakdown

Oil in power steering VAZ 2110

Most often, the following signs indicate that the hydraulic booster is not working correctly:

  • When you rotate the steering wheel, strange sounds are made that were not there before;
  • The steering wheel turns slower than before. In addition, the driver has to exert greater effort when rotating it than before.

Note: These problems can also occur as a result of other problems. Therefore, before you start repairing the GRU, you need to figure out whether the problem really lies with it.

Power steering oil for VAZ 2110

In order for the car to always function normally and there are no failures during its operation, it is necessary that the driver service it in a timely manner. However, such service must be correct. The power steering operates using oil, so it is very sensitive to the condition of such fluid. You can give some tips regarding its maintenance:

  • The oil should be changed at least once a year. Those who use their car too intensively need to change the oil especially often.

Note: otherwise the power steering will stop working correctly, so it will need to be repaired or even replaced, which will cost much more than buying new oil.

  • In addition, in addition complete replacement Oil needs to be topped up sometimes. Very often the oil level becomes below the required level. Therefore, it must be topped up to the maximum level. If you add it frequently, it turns black. This indicates the need to replace it.

Operating rules

Power steering oil for VAZ 2110

In order for the hydraulic booster to serve for a long time, during its operation the following rules must be observed:

  • In winter it needs to be warmed up, otherwise it may crack under the influence of severe frost. It warms up easily. To do this, you just need to twist it several times, first to the right, and then to the left. In this case, the rotation amplitude should not be too large.
  • If the power steering is faulty, then you should not drive the car under any circumstances.

Note: This will result in emergency situation on the road, as the driver may not be able to turn in time.

  • If the oil level in the hydraulic booster is below normal or is not there at all, then using the machine in this case is prohibited.
  • You should not hold the steering wheel in the extreme positions for too long. Because of this, the pump is overloaded.

Note: to prevent the load from being so strong, you do not need to hold the steering wheel in extreme positions. It is enough to move it just a few cm back.

How to choose power steering oil

Oil for power steering VAZ 2110

Usually, for any model, the manufacturer gives recommendations on what kind of power steering oil needs to be filled. Under no circumstances should cheap oils be poured into the top ten, as this will lead to timely failure of the machine. This is due to the fact that they do not have enough of those protective properties, which the GRU needs.

Note: in some cases it is necessary to fill this system with regular engine oil. But this should only be done in emergency situations.

How to understand that the power steering needs replacement

It is necessary to start replacing the GRU system only if:

  • There is an oil leak in the system;
  • The steering wheel turns much harder than it did before;
  • The oil developed a smell reminiscent of burning;
  • At higher speeds the steering wheel turns easier than at idle;
  • There are strange sounds in the system.

Note: Any part may wear out due to the oil not being changed on time.

Which oils to choose: mineral or synthetic

Exist different kinds oils Naturally, mineral oils are much more expensive than synthetic ones. However they have much more useful properties. The power steering system has many rubber parts. Synthetic oils have a bad effect on rubber, as they are quite aggressive (this cannot be said about mineral oils). Such oils can only be poured into this system if its parts are designed for this.

Changing the oil in the system

Having decided to independently change the oil in the system, you must perform the following steps in the exact sequence:

  • Unscrew the cap of the tank where the oil is located.
  • Pump out the liquid present here. To do this, you can use a syringe with a thin tube.
  • Fill with new fluid to the maximum possible level.
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel several times, left and right.
  • Turn off the engine

However, there is another way that will allow you to completely pump out all the liquid from the system. For this:

  • Pump out the liquid from the tank.
  • Loosen the clamps on the hoses that go to the tank.
  • Remove the hoses and reservoir. It needs to be washed.
  • The hose from the steering rack should be placed at one end in a plastic bottle.
  • Turn on the engine. Turn the steering wheel left and right. This will remove excess liquid from the system, which will flow out through the hose.

Note: before starting work, you can hang up the front of the car, which will make it easier to turn the steering wheel.

  • The second hose should be inserted onto the funnel. Pour new fluid through it.
  • Everything needs to be assembled in reverse.

You can change the oil in the power steering system yourself. Before starting this procedure, you should review photos and videos on this topic, of which there are a lot on the Internet. In addition, our instructions can help. It is noteworthy that the price of new oil is much lower than the cost of repairing the entire GRU system, which may break down due to the fact that the oil has not been changed for a long time.

How to replace power steering fluid on a VAZ car yourself

If you find oil stains in the area of the power steering, then most likely the source of the oil leak is the power steering system pipes. Regular and high pressure hoses must be checked and replaced if necessary.

Before you start self-replacement fluid in the power steering (power steering) of your VAZ, read the information from the manufacturer about the types and brands of fluid used in the car. Most models use Pentosin Hydraulic Fluid CHF 11S VW52137.

I would like to note that the procedure for replacing power steering fluid is not complicated and will take you no more than an hour of time. So, let's get started.

We hang the front of the car on a jack and place a stop under the front part of the sills.

Then, using a syringe with an extension in the form of a plastic tube, we pump out the waste fluid from the power steering reservoir. After the fluid in the tank runs out, turn the steering wheel all the way to the left. Oil will appear in the reservoir again. We pump it out and turn the steering wheel all the way to the right. We pump out the resulting liquid again.

We carry out this procedure until the power steering reservoir runs out of fluid.

Next, we remove the hose that comes from the passenger compartment and enters the tank (shown with a short arrow in the figure), and then turn the steering wheel from side to side, a certain amount of oil should come out. Then we turn the steering wheel several times in different directions until it stops, which will get rid of any remaining oil in the system. And then we put the hose in its place.

Now let's start filling out hydraulic system new oil. In this case, we’ll take power steering oil Castrol ATF Dex II Multivehicle. We will need approximately 800 grams.

Fill the reservoir with fluid to the maximum level and begin to turn the steering wheel all the way, first to the left and then to the right.

Now we start the engine for a while and turn it off. Then we turn the steering wheel again. During these operations, the liquid in the tank will decrease, do not forget to add it.

At the end, we pump and remove air from the power steering. To do this, turn the steering wheel with the car turned off 10 times in each direction. Then the same amount with the engine running.

After replacing the power steering fluid, you should feel that the steering wheel begins to rotate much easier __________________________________________________________________________________________________________

There is another way to replace power steering fluid. Its essence is to replace old oil with new one. This method is of higher quality, since it is possible to completely get rid of the old oil, but at the same time you will need twice as much new oil.

For this procedure you will need an assistant 1. Pump out the fluid from the power steering reservoir; 2. Remove the return hose from the tank and turn it off, for example, with another hose with a pinched end; 3. We put another hose on the return line and lead it under the car into a previously prepared container; 4. Fill the reservoir with liquid to the maximum level, the assistant starts the engine; 5. As soon as the liquid is gone, the assistant turns off the engine at your signal; 6. Fill the liquid again to the “MAX” mark and repeat the procedure until clean liquid flows into the prepared container;

7. Put the return hose back on and add power steering fluid to the required level.

And in conclusion, we invite you to familiarize yourself with the procedure for replacing power steering hoses on a VAZ car

Changing the power steering oil for 21124 [Archive] - AvtoSaratov

View full version: Changing oil in power steering for 21124

The power steering tube started to sweat (photo below from the network), it’s not critical, but it’s an eyesore. 167860167861167862 decided to change it, and at the same time the power steering fluid

that it is filled with xs, but filled from the factory. On the Internet they write that you can only pour Pentosin CHF 11, who poured what and how did you change it?

It's also sweating - it's stopped, the level doesn't seem to be dropping. Filled with pentosin.

Yes, the level doesn’t drop much either. Has anyone seen these hoses and oil for sale? what is their price) or maybe I’ll forget it too)))

I haven't seen either one for sale. You can either order the oil on the Internet, or from BMW dealers- it is mainly used there in power steering.

On the Internet they write that only Pentosin CHF 11 should be poured. Otherwise, what?

The hose is also snotty, and has been for quite some time now. Doesn't affect the level much. I’m not going to change it in the near future unless the leak progresses, since the hoses are not cheap, so far it doesn’t bother me in general. for topping up, I bought mannol power steering fluid in the Lada Market on Shekhurdin, having first asked what could be topped up from the warranty engineer. after topping up everything is fine.

Otherwise what? Well, as I understand it, pentosin is poured from the factory and it cannot be mixed in the same way as motor oil, probably this oil is recommended by the power steering manufacturer (on boomers there is the same power steering and the same oil)

167932 is a complete analogue of SCT MANNOL CHF, more affordable in price and availability.

Well, as I understand it, pentosin is poured from the factory and it cannot be mixed in the same way as motor oil. This oil is probably recommended by the power steering manufacturer (on Boomers it’s the same power steering and the same oil). Mixing and filling are two different things, right? and who said that the power steering is the same?

stirring and pouring are two different things, right? and who said that the power steering is the same? Well, actually, I’m not an expert, and these questions are also interesting, that’s why I created a topic... Power steering ZF on my VAZ, on a BMW... I just know that this oil is recommended by this power steering manufacturer, and they pour it from the factory .

Power steering ZF on my VAZ, on BMW... ZF on half of all the cars in the world. At VAZ, by the way, only part of the system is ZF. A pump, for example.

ZF- on half of all cars in the world. At VAZ, by the way, only part of the system is ZF. A pump, for example. As far as I understand, the ZF hydrach costs exactly (http://www.tuningsvs.ru/product_1455.html). I read what they put on many foreign models. The conversation is not about where and what they put, but about what to pour and where to get)

if you need CHF, then write in a personal message, I have it

I looked for hoses, but they weren't there. There is a place to order, but they said the price is not small...

I changed it yesterday. I took the oil from Maria (http://www.autosaratov.ru/phorum/member.php?7318-Maria). I took a liter of mannol and poured too much for the run. there wasn’t enough for topping up) it didn’t work out neatly at all; I doused the protection a little when removing the hoses from the barrel, the lower return hose.

Nadir Abzi

There is only the top hose. There is no bottom one. Can I buy it separately? How much will it cost?

Today I looked in the reservoir, the oil is clean, a normal replacement for the original

Replacing power steering fluid - logbook for Lada 2112 2007 on DRIVE2

My first entry. I still haven’t figured out what, how and where)) Forgive me generously)) There was Pentosin liquid, it says that it is poured into Bentley, for my engine it’s just that)) Naturally purchased earlier, or rather a long time ago. Still didn't get around to making a replacement. What was poured in has already been used up (IMHO), since the liquid had the light of tar and smelled a little burnt, these are the two factors when it should be replaced. Its service life is long. And now, in order. Didn't jack it up. The fluid drained quickly when the car was running. I turned the steering wheel a little in place. Respect to the wine breeders club))

The same connecting coupling. Diameter 10mm, they sell it in an atom shop for rubles))

vk.com/official_club2112

When replacing, I did not disconnect the wiring with hoses from the absorber, everything was in place

This is what was in the tank itself. I drained it without a syringe. There was a piece of hose a meter long and a little more than 10 mm in diameter. He stuck one end into the tank, and dropped the other into an empty, unnecessary canister of store-bought water. Then, covering with his fingers the free space in the filler neck of the tank around the hose, he made a small access between them and... after inhaling there a couple of times from the heart - all the liquid ended up in this jar)))

Then, I drained the remaining part of the slurry with small pieces of rags, carefully poking around with a screwdriver))

The same pentosin. I took Zhelezyak from the Planet, which is located in the capital last year. Canister for a ruble. Expensive.

Connection: the lower hose is the return to the tank. I connected it with a coupling with a diameter of 10 mm with approximately the same hose, the end of which was placed in an empty container for dumping dirt)))

A piece of hose, about 20 cm long, instead of a plug from the return line, I connected it with a free clamp and simply placed it slightly above the level of the tank. The new liquid will not spill anywhere

When I poured it in and did everything naturally, covering it with rags. After removing the hose, some of the liquid still ends up on the iron. About 50 grams ended up on the floor. But nothing got on the generator drive or the belt. Everything is dry. Protect yourself))

I rinsed it well, it took one and a half liters of this miracle liquid. Half a liter is always useful for topping up from leaks. If there are any)

I drove it right after the replacement. The liquid is clean. Nothing buzzes, doesn't itch, doesn't make noise

Hydraulic power steering (power steering).

There is an opinion that over the course of many years of owning various types of cars, including imported ones, car owners are able to carry out many scheduled fluid changes on their own, without resorting to the services of service station specialists.

That’s how it is, by and large, and it’s no secret that today you can find a lot of useful and comprehensive information on the Internet. However, one constant BUT remains - the lack of experience and qualifications of the car owner. And there is often so much information that finding the right solution sometimes becomes an unrealistic and impossible task.

How often do car owners themselves replace power steering fluid in their garage? Yes, in fact, it’s trivial - you buy power steering fluid, disconnect the return hose from the power steering reservoir, hang the front wheels on a jack (in order to reduce the load on the steering wheel when rotating), and the “happy car owner” begins to turn the steering wheel left and right, trying to squeeze out any remaining liquid. Eventually the liquid stops flowing out of the hose. Hurray, all the liquid has been drained. The return rod returns to its rightful place, and fresh fluid is poured into the tank. We turned the steering wheel and added a little more fluid. EVERYTHING, the replacement was completed successfully, everything in the system is clean and beautiful. Moreover, in case of an emergency, there was more than half a liter left in the glass. No matter how it is.........

I specifically wrote the phrase “Happy car owner” in quotation marks. Because there is no happiness in such a replacement. Few people know that about 1 liter of fluid is poured into the power steering. And with the replacement method described above, the old and often very dirty liquid will not come out completely, but only partially. Most of it will remain in the system and simply mix with the new one. As a result, after a very short period of time, the car owner will be able to notice that the liquid has very quickly darkened and again acquired a dirty tint. And dirt becomes the cause of malfunction and breakdown in the first place, and subsequently very expensive repairs.

Another equally common way is to do the same procedure that I described above, but with the engine running. Allegedly, a working power steering pump will squeeze out the dirty fluid completely. All that remains is to fill it with fresh water and enjoy the comfort. Another misconception. As soon as you start the engine, the power steering pump will spit out fluid in a split second, leaving the entire power steering system unlubricated and full of air. You simply won’t have time to add liquid to the tank. And airing the power steering system, as a rule, leads to a very quick breakdown. OPERATING POWER GEAR WITH A LACK OF FLUID IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED!!! IT IS PROHIBITED TO CHANGE THE LIQUID IN THIS METHOD!!!

Why else does the drain/fill fluid replacement system not give the desired result? DIRT! During operation, dust gets into various vehicle systems in one way or another. Various deposits are formed that migrate throughout the system. The fluid replacement described above does not provide any guarantee that these deposits will be removed from the system when the old fluid is drained.

I perfectly understand car owners, because I am one myself, that such fluid replacements are, first of all, about SAVING money. Because, whatever one may say, a car requires certain financial costs. Believe me, this is an imaginary feeling of saving and only at first glance. Because the savings often lead to even greater costs - when components and assemblies fail, or when they break down. Don't skimp on your car. This will help you avoid many unpleasant moments and considerable repair costs in the future.

What kind of oil to add to the power steering, VAZ 2111 | Topic author: Vladislav

Nikolay  it says ZF on the lid, so they fill it

Raisa  I don’t know about 2111, but in Lanos I poured oil for the Castrol automatic gearbox Veronica and Narmonek. I think it’s the same here. in general it should be written in the manual

Diana  The power steering system of VAZ 2110 - 2111 is filled with a liquid of the type: Pentosin CHF11S, in an amount of 1.6-1.7 liters. During operation, top up to the maximum level using the dipstick on the tank lid.

Ivan  Look at the color of your liquid. There may be two options. Either red, then Dexron, Gregory, or green, then Pentosin Pavel or an analogue.

Fluids used in power steering can be divided according to several criteria:

  • Color;
  • Compound;
  • Variety.

Color classification

It is wrong to be guided only by color gradation when choosing oil, although this practice is widespread among car owners. It is also often indicated what color liquids can be mixed and which ones should not be mixed.

Mixing is contraindicated with liquids based on composition and not color, and since now both mineral water and synthetics can be presented in any color, you should treat this information very carefully.

Red transmission oil ATF is usually synthetic, the Dexron brand from General Motors is considered the reference, but there are products from other manufacturers, such as Revenol, Motul, Shell, Zic, etc.

Yellow oil, produced by the Daimler concern and under its license, is used in Mercedes-Benz hydraulic boosters. It can be synthetic and mineral.

Green oil. For the most part, multifunctional and universal liquids can be either synthetic or mineral in composition. They are used in power steering, suspension and other systems that operate on liquids. It cannot be mixed with other colors, except in cases where the manufacturer declares full compatibility, for example Comma PSF MVCHF is compatible with some types of Dexron.

Liquid composition

Based on the composition of the power steering fluid, it can be divided into mineral, semi-synthetic and synthetic. The chemical composition determines the basic set of oil functions:

  • Viscosity characteristics;
  • Lubricating properties;
  • Protection of parts from corrosion;
  • Prevents foaming;
  • Temperature and hydraulic properties.

Synthetics and mineral water cannot be mixed with each other, since the types of additives in them have fundamental differences.

Synthetics

These are high-tech liquids, in the production of which the most modern developments and additives are used. Oil fractions for synthetics are purified by hydrocracking. Polyesters, polyhydric alcohols and sets of additives give them outstanding characteristics: a wide range of operating temperatures, stable oil film, long service life.

The main reason why hydraulic fluid should not be poured into synthetic base in power steering, intended for mineral ones - its aggressive effect on rubber products, of which there are many in the hydraulic booster. Where synthetics are used, the rubber has a completely different composition and is made on a silicone basis.

Semi-synthetics

A mixture of synthetic and mineral oils, due to which the latter receive significant improvements in performance: reduced foaming, fluidity, heat dissipation.

Semi-synthetic fluids include such well-known fluids as: Zic ATF Dex 3, Comma PSF MVCHF, Motul Dexron III and others.

Mineralka

Mineral-based oils contain petroleum fractions (85-98%), the rest are additives that improve the performance of the hydraulic fluid.

They are used in hydraulic boosters containing seals and parts based on ordinary rubber, since the mineral component is neutral and is not harmful to rubber products, unlike synthetics.

Mineral power steering fluids are the most inexpensive, but they also have a short service life. Mobil ATF 320 Premium is considered a good mineral oil; Dexron oils up to and including the IID marking were also mineral.

Different types of oils

Dexron- a separate class of ATF fluids from General Motors, produced since 1968. Dexron is a trademark, produced both by GM itself and by other companies under license.

ATF(Automatic Transmission Fluid) - oils for automatic transmissions, often used by Japanese automakers and in power steering.

P.S.F.(Power Steering Fluid) - literally translated as power steering fluid.

Multi HF– special, universal power steering fluids that have approvals from most automobile manufacturers. For example, CHF liquid, produced by the German company Pentosin, has received approvals from BMW, Ford, Chrysler, GM, Porsche, Saab and Volvo, Dodge, Chrysler.

Is it possible to mix oils?

Mixing is permissible, but you must follow the manufacturer's recommendations. Most often, the packaging indicates with which brands and classes of oils a particular power steering fluid can be mixed.

Do not mix synthetics and mineral water, as well as different colors, unless expressly indicated. If you have nowhere to go, and you have to pour what you have at hand, at the first opportunity, replace this mixture with the recommended one.

Is it possible to fill the power steering with engine oil?

Motor - definitely not, transmission - with reservations. Next we will look in detail why.

To understand whether other oils, such as motor or transmission oils, can be poured into the power steering, you need to know what functions it performs.

The power steering fluid must cope with the following tasks:

  • Lubrication of all power steering components;
  • Protection against corrosion and wear of parts;
  • Pressure transfer;
  • Prevents foaming;
  • System cooling.

The above characteristics are achieved by adding various additives, the presence and combination of which gives power steering oil the necessary qualities.

As you understand, the tasks of motor oil are somewhat different, so it is highly not recommended to pour it into the power steering.

Regarding transmission oil, everything is not so clear; the Japanese often use the same ATF fluid for automatic transmission and power steering. Europeans insist on using special PSF (Power Steering Fluid) oils.

What kind of fluid to pour into the power steering

Based on this, the answer to the question “what kind of oil to pour into the power steering” is obvious - recommended by the manufacturer of your car. Information is often provided on expansion tank or lid. If there is no technical documentation, call an authorized center and ask.

In any case, experiments with steering are unacceptable. Not only your safety, but also that of those around you depends on the health of your power steering.

How much oil is in power steering

As a rule, to replace in passenger car 1 liter of liquid is enough. For trucks this value can reach 4 liters. The volume may change slightly up or down, but you should focus on these numbers.

How to check the level

To control the fluid level in the power steering, an expansion tank is provided. Usually it is marked with MIN and MAX values. Depending on the make of the car, the inscriptions may change, but the essence does not change - the oil level should be between these values.

How to top up

The process of topping up is simple - you need to unscrew the cap of the power steering expansion tank and add enough fluid so that it is between the MIN and MAX marks.

The main problem when adding power steering oil is its choice. It’s good if the replacement has not yet been made, and the system contains fluid from the manufacturer’s factory. In this case, it is enough to check with technical documentation, take the recommended oil and add to the required amount.

If you don’t know what’s in the system, we recommend replacing it right away, because in any case you’ll have to buy a canister of liquid to top up.

What kind of oil should I put in the power steering? This question interests car owners in different cases (when changing fluid, when buying a car, before the cold season, and so on). Japanese manufacturers allow automatic transmission fluid (ATF) to be filled into the power steering system. But European ones indicate that it is necessary to pour special fluids (PSF). Externally they differ in color. Based on these main and additional features, which we will consider below, it is precisely possible to determine what kind of oil to put in the power steering.

Types of power steering fluids

Before answering the question of what kind of power steering oil, you need to determine the existing types of these fluids. Historically, it has happened that car enthusiasts distinguish them only by color, although this is not entirely correct. After all, it is more technically competent to pay attention to the tolerances that power steering fluids have. In particular:

  • viscosity;
  • mechanical properties;
  • hydraulic properties;
  • chemical composition;
  • temperature characteristics.

Therefore, when choosing, first of all, you need to pay attention to the listed characteristics, and then to the color. In addition, the following oils are currently used in power steering:

  • Mineral. Their use is due to the presence of a large number of rubber parts in the power steering system - o-rings, oil seals and other things. In severe frosts and extreme heat, rubber may crack and lose its performance properties. To prevent this from happening, they use mineral oils, which the best way protect rubber products from the listed harmful factors.
  • Synthetic. The problem with their use is that they contain rubber fibers, which are harmful to the rubber sealing products present in the system. However, modern automakers have begun to add silicone to rubber, which neutralizes the effect of synthetic fluids. Accordingly, the scope of their use is constantly growing. When buying a car, be sure to read in the service book what kind of oil to pour into the power steering. If there is no service book, call official dealer. In any case, you need to know clear tolerances for the possibility of using synthetic oil.

Let us list the advantages and disadvantages of each of the mentioned types of oils. So, on to the benefits mineral oils applies:

  • gentle effect on rubber products of the system;
  • low price.

Disadvantages of mineral oils:

  • significant kinematic viscosity;
  • high tendency to form foam;
  • short service life.

Advantages fully synthetic oils:

Differences in color between different oils

  • long service life;
  • stable operation in any temperature conditions;
  • low viscosity;
  • the highest lubricating, anti-corrosion, antioxidant and foam-suppressing properties.

Disadvantages of synthetic oils:

  • aggressive effect on rubber parts of the power steering system;
  • approval for use in a limited number of vehicles;
  • high price.

As for the common color gradation, automakers offer the following power steering fluids:

  • Of red color. It is considered the most advanced because it is created on the basis of synthetic materials. Refers to Dexron, which represent the ATF class - transmission fluids for automatic transmissions (Automatic Transmission Fluid). These oils are often used in automatic transmissions transmission However, they are not suitable for all vehicles.
  • Yellow color. Such fluids can be used for automatic transmissions and power steering. They are usually made based on mineral components. Their manufacturer is the German concern Daimler. Accordingly, these oils are used in cars produced by this concern.
  • Green color. This composition is also universal. However, it can only be used with manual transmission and as a power steering fluid. The oil can be made from mineral or synthetic components. Usually more viscous.

Many automakers use the same oil for automatic transmissions and power steering. In particular, these include companies from Japan. And European manufacturers require that a special fluid be used in hydraulic boosters. Many consider this a simple marketing ploy. Regardless of the type, all power steering fluids perform the same tasks. Let's take a closer look at them.

Functions of power steering fluids

The functions of power steering oils include:

  • transfer of pressures and forces between the working bodies of the system;
  • lubrication of power steering components and mechanisms;
  • anti-corrosion function;
  • transfer of thermal energy to cool the system.

Hydraulic oils for power steering contain the following additives:

PSF fluid for power steering

  • reducing friction;
  • viscosity stabilizers;
  • anti-corrosion substances;
  • acidity stabilizers;
  • coloring compounds;
  • antifoam additives;
  • compositions for protecting rubber parts of the power steering mechanism.

ATF oils perform the same functions, but their differences are as follows:

  • they contain additives that increase the static friction of clutches, as well as reduce their wear;
  • The different fluid compositions are due to the fact that clutches are made of different materials.

Any power steering fluid is created on the basis of a base oil and a certain amount of additives. Due to their differences, the question often arises as to whether different types of oils can be mixed.

The answer to this question is simple - the fluid that your car manufacturer recommends. And it is unacceptable to conduct experiments here. The fact is that if you constantly use oil that is not suitable in composition for your power steering, then over time there is a high probability of complete failure of the hydraulic booster.

Therefore, when choosing which fluid to pour into the power steering, the following factors must be taken into account:

GM ATF Dexron III

  • Automaker recommendations. There is no need to engage in amateur activities and pour anything into the power steering system.
  • Mixing is permissible only with similar compositions. However, it is not advisable to use such mixtures for a long time. As soon as possible, replace the fluid with the one recommended by the manufacturer.
  • The oil must withstand significant temperatures. Indeed, in the summer they can warm up to +100°C and above.
  • The liquid must be sufficiently fluid. Otherwise, there will be an excessive load on the pump, which will lead to its premature failure.
  • The oil must have a significant service life. Typically, replacement is carried out after 70...80 thousand kilometers or once every 2-3 years, whichever comes first.

Also, many car owners are interested in questions about whether it is possible to pour transmission oil into the gearbox? Or motor oil? As for the second, it’s worth saying right away - no. But as for the first ones, they can be used, but with certain reservations.

The most common are two types of fluids - Dexron and Power Steering Fuel (PSF). Moreover, the first one is more common. Currently, fluids that meet the Dexron II and Dexron III standards are mainly used. Both compounds were originally developed by General Motors. is currently produced under license by numerous manufacturers. They differ from each other in the temperature range of use. The German concern Daimler, which includes the world famous Mercedes-Benz, has developed its own power steering fluid, which is yellow in color. However, there are many companies in the world that produce such compounds under license.

If you did not find the make of your car in the table, we recommend that you look. You will probably find a lot of interesting things for yourself and select the fluid that is optimal for the power steering of your car.

Is it possible to mix power steering fluids?

What should you do if you do not have the brand of fluid that your car's power steering system uses? You can mix similar compositions, provided that they belong to the same type ( “synthetics” and “mineral water” should not be mixed under any circumstances). In particular, yellow and red oils are compatible. Their compositions are similar, and they will not harm the power steering. However, it is not recommended to drive this mixture for a long time. As soon as possible, replace your power steering fluid with the one recommended by your car manufacturer.

And here green oil cannot be added to red or yellow oil in no case. This is due to the fact that synthetic and mineral oils cannot be mixed with each other.

Liquids can be conditionally divide into three groups, within which it is permissible to mix them with each other. The first such group includes “conditionally mixed” light-colored mineral oils(red, yellow). The figure below shows samples of oils that can be mixed with each other if there is an equal sign opposite them. However, as practice shows, mixing oils between which there is no equal sign is also acceptable, although undesirable.

The second group includes dark mineral oils(green), which can only be mixed with each other. Accordingly, they cannot be mixed with liquids from other groups.

The third group also includes synthetic oils, which can only be mixed with each other. However, it is worth paying attention that such oils should be used in the power steering system only if specified. clearly stated in the manual for your car.

Mixing fluids most often occurs when adding oil to the system. And this must be done when its level drops, including due to leakage. The signs described below will tell you about this.

Signs of a power steering fluid leak

There are several simple signs of a power steering fluid leak. By their appearance, you can judge that it is time to change or top up. And this action is associated with choice. So, signs of a leak include:

  • decreased fluid level in the expansion tank of the power steering system;
  • the appearance of drips on the steering rack, under the rubber seals or on the oil seals;
  • a knocking sound in the steering rack when driving:
  • to turn the steering wheel, you need to apply more effort;
  • the power steering system pump began to make extraneous noise;
  • There was significant play in the steering wheel.

If at least one of the listed symptoms appears, it is necessary to check the fluid level in the tank. And if necessary, replace or top up. However, before doing this, you should decide which liquid to use for this.

You cannot operate a car without power steering fluid, since this is not only harmful to it, but also unsafe for you and the people and cars around you.

Results

Thus, the answer to the question of which power steering oil is best to use will be information from the automaker of your car. Do not forget that you can mix red and yellow liquids, but they must be of the same type (only synthetics or only mineral water). Also, add or completely change power steering oil on time. It is very harmful for him to have a situation where there is not enough fluid in the system. And check the condition of the oil periodically. Do not allow it to darken significantly.

Most often, the following signs indicate that the hydraulic booster is not working correctly:

  • When rotating, strange sounds are made that were not there before;
  • The steering wheel turns slower than before. In addition, the driver has to exert greater effort when rotating it than before.

Note: These problems can also occur as a result of other problems. Therefore, before you start repairing the GRU, you need to figure out whether the problem really lies with it.

Power steering service

In order for the car to always function normally and there are no failures during its operation, it is necessary that the driver service it in a timely manner.
However, such service must be correct. It works using oil, so it is very sensitive to the condition of such a liquid.
You can give some tips regarding its maintenance:

  • The oil should be changed at least once a year. Those who use their car too intensively need to change the oil especially often.

Note: otherwise the power steering will stop working correctly, so it will need to be repaired or even replaced, which will cost much more than buying new oil.

  • In addition, in addition to a complete oil change, it is necessary to top it up sometimes. Very often the oil level becomes below the required level.
    Therefore, it must be topped up to the maximum level. If you add it frequently, it turns black. This indicates the need to replace it.

Operating rules

In order for the hydraulic booster to serve for a long time, during its operation the following rules must be observed:

  • In winter it needs to be warmed up, otherwise it may crack under the influence of severe frost. It warms up easily.
    To do this, you just need to twist it several times, first to the right, and then to the left. In this case, the rotation amplitude should not be too large.
  • If the power steering is faulty, then you should not drive the car under any circumstances.

Note: this will lead to an emergency on the road, as the driver may not be able to turn in time.

  • If the level is below normal or is not there at all, then using the machine is prohibited.
  • You should not hold the steering wheel in the extreme positions for too long. Because of this, the pump is overloaded.

Note: to prevent the load from being so strong, you do not need to hold the steering wheel in extreme positions. It is enough to move it just a few cm back.

How to choose power steering oil

Usually, for any model, the manufacturer gives recommendations on what needs to be filled. Under no circumstances should cheap oils be poured into the top ten, as this will lead to timely failure of the machine.
This is due to the fact that they do not have enough of the protective properties that the GRU needs.

Note: in some cases it is necessary to fill this system with regular engine oil. But this should only be done in emergency situations.

How to understand that the power steering needs replacement

It is necessary to start replacing the GRU system only if:

  • There is an oil leak in the system;
  • The steering wheel turns much harder than it did before;
  • The oil developed a smell reminiscent of burning;
  • At higher speeds the steering wheel turns easier than at idle;
  • There are strange sounds in the system.

Note: Any part may wear out due to the oil not being changed on time.

Which oils to choose: mineral or synthetic

There are different types of oils. Naturally, mineral oils are much more expensive than synthetic ones. However, they have much more useful properties.
