What kind of oil to pour into fx35 automatic transmission. Changing the oil in the automatic transmission of infiniti fx35 (2nd generation s51). When to change

17.10.2020

IN modern world The popularity of crossovers is growing at an astonishing rate. Cause? Crossover is a compromise between a jeep ( high cross-country ability and low comfort) and passenger car(low cross-country ability and high comfort), possessing the best features of each type. Of course, such a large automaker as Nissan could not miss the chance and not release a crossover. Model name - Infiniti.

The released model is distinguished by amazing reliability for crossovers, but, of course, still requires maintenance. One of the rarest and, to the same extent, important procedures is changing the oil in an Infiniti automatic transmission. In most cases, it is recommended to contact the station Maintenance, but, with proper preparation, this procedure can be carried out independently.

Timing for oil changes in Infiniti automatic transmission

According to technical regulations, automatic transmission oil changes are not carried out on Infiniti. The volume filled at the factory should be sufficient for the entire period of operation of the vehicle. In theory. In practice, the situation is different, taking into account modern realities, when the car is used as long as it can drive (no matter how “successfully”).

Car owners of Infiniti FX 35 and “adjacent” models claim that replacing the lubricant transmission fluid it needs to be carried out every 50 thousand kilometers, and checked every 10 thousand.

If the oil change in the automatic transmission in Infinity was not carried out in a timely manner, then the following consequences can be expected:

  • difficult transmission mode switching;
  • engine knocking when driving;
  • increased fuel consumption;
  • deterioration in vehicle controllability.

The listed consequences can be considered key criteria indicating the need to carry out the procedure for changing the filter element and lubricant. And all of them occur due to the fact that the gear oil does not cope with its functions due to contamination. Features mentioned include:

  • thermal regulation of gears in the transmission;
  • cleaning the automatic transmission from wear products and foreign microparticles;
  • anti-friction treatment to reduce friction between parts;
  • transmission of torque in the torque converter;
  • anti-corrosion protection;
  • friction clutch.

Automatic transmission lubricant performs the mentioned functions even under more severe conditions compared to motor oil and, accordingly, the criteria imposed on it are much stricter.

The volume required to replace the fluid is 4-6 liters (if a complete change is planned rather than topping up, then this figure needs to be increased 2-3 times).

To check the oil level in the automatic transmission on a Nissan Infiniti, you need to carry out the following procedure:

  • Place the machine on a flat surface, without tilting;
  • Warm up the engine;
  • Holding the brake pedal, switch the automatic transmission selector to each of the possible positions, with delays. Stop at position “P”;
  • Inspect the transmission for oil leaks;
  • Remove the plastic engine cover. To do this you will need a 10 key;
  • Using the same 10mm wrench, loosen the bolt that secures the dipstick in place;
  • The dipstick is removed, wiped with a lint-free cloth, inserted back and removed again. Under optimal conditions, the oil level should be close to the COLD mark if the oil temperature is currently 30-50 degrees Celsius;
  • If the level is below the specified mark, oil is added to the dipstick hole;
  • The bolt is clamped and the engine cover is returned to its place;
  • The car warms up again;
  • The whole procedure is repeated, but now the countdown must be carried out from the HOT mark on the dipstick.

Changing the automatic transmission oil on Infinity

Before you begin the procedure for changing the oil in an automatic transmission on an Infiniti, you need to carefully prepare for it.

First, you need to purchase consumables. This includes the oil and probably the filter and pan with magnets (for a full automatic transmission oil change). The car owner can choose the brand independently, but it is better to seek help official dealers. It is somewhat more expensive to purchase spare parts and lubricants from them, but the quality is an order of magnitude higher than from “private dealers” (who can sell at least low-quality goods).

Advice: it is strongly recommended to purchase only Nissan ATF Matic J fluid. Even if the selected analogue indicates that the lubricating fluid is compatible with the Infiniti FX35 model, this is not true. In practice, Japanese-made automatic transmissions are sensitive to “foreign” oils.

Secondly, you should prepare the following list of tools:

  • screwdriver;
  • a set of keys;
  • rags;
  • thick gloves and mask;
  • ratchet;
  • container for used lubricant, with a volume of at least 4-5 liters.

Thirdly, it is important to remember about safety precautions.

  • The entire procedure is carried out with a warm engine, when the oil is heated to a temperature dangerous to humans. Therefore, all manipulations should be carried out in thick clothing, gloves and, ideally, a mask with goggles.
  • When installing the machine on an overpass or pit, you need to make sure that it does not start to roll down during the repair process (this can lead to tragic consequences), and secure it hand brake or leave the automatic transmission lever at speed, and also install clamps under the wheels (bricks, boards, etc.).
  • For light sources, use ONLY lamps or flashlights. Using a lighter or match to illuminate yourself under the car is a bad idea and could lead to an accident.

Partial oil change in automatic transmission

This option is quite possible to carry out independently, but the car owner will not be able to completely change the entire transmission lubricant. Typically, the percentage of fluid drained and replaced does not exceed 40-50% of the total volume, but under standard conditions this is enough to extend the life of the car.

Step-by-step instructions for partially changing the automatic transmission oil on a Nissan Infinity:

  1. The machine is installed on a pit, overpass or lift. If these options are not available, you can use a jack.
  2. The gearbox protection is removed.
  3. A prepared waste container is placed under the drain hole.
  4. The plug is unscrewed and now you need to wait until the oil stops flowing. Then the plug needs to be screwed into place.
  5. The oil pan is removed. First, all the mounting bolts are unscrewed, except for the two in the middle. Then, with great care and precision, they are unscrewed. If you perform the procedure differently, you may damage the pan or spill hot oil on your head.
  6. The strainer is removed. At the same time, when unscrewing the parts that hold it in place, it is better to remember or write down which one was located, so as not to confuse anything during assembly.
  7. The tray, magnets and mesh filter are thoroughly cleaned of all dirt. The pan gasket is replaced with a new one.
  8. All removed parts are installed back in reverse order.
  9. Using a 10mm wrench, the plastic engine casing is removed. Then the measuring probe is removed and the fixing bolt is unscrewed with the same key.
  10. A volume of transmission fluid equal to the drained volume is poured into the hole from which the dipstick was removed. Then the lubricant level is checked. It should be closer to the maximum at the cold oil mark.
  11. The engine starts. It should work for at least 5-10 minutes, with the selector lever switching through all modes with a slight delay.
  12. Then the engine is turned off and the level of the already hot oil is checked (that is, at the “HOT” mark).

You can repeat the replacement to further clean the lubricant only after 500 - 1000 km.

Complete oil change in automatic transmission

If we talk about the procedure for completely changing the automatic transmission oil on a Nissan Infinity, it is not recommended to do it yourself. The transmission as a whole is considered one of the most complex components of a car, and even professionals approach working with it with great care. But if the car owner is confident in his abilities and does not want to go to a service station, then he should read the instructions below.

The procedure for a complete oil change in an automatic gearbox on an Infiniti FX35:

  1. The car engine warms up, after which it is installed on an overpass, lift or inspection hole.
  2. The engine protection is removed.
  3. The automatic transmission drain plug is unscrewed and the oil is drained (about 4 liters).
  4. The pan is removed in accordance with the above recommendations.
  5. The tray and magnets are cleaned.
  6. The metal filter is removed. If it is in good condition, you can simply wash it with carburetor cleaner and blow out the insides with a vacuum cleaner to remove metal shavings. It is important to remember that the bolts that secure the filter element are of different lengths, so you need to write down their locations.
  7. The condition of the pan gasket is checked. If it looks worn out, it is better to replace it and install it together with the filter in reverse order.
  8. Oil is poured into the dipstick hole. The volume of liquid poured is similar to the volume drained (about 4-5 liters)
  9. There is also oil left in the torque converter. It must be drained using the replacement method with the engine running. To do this, the return hose passing between the automatic transmission radiator and the pan is disconnected and directed into a previously prepared container. When the engine starts, the old transmission oil will begin to drain. To make the cleaning procedure more effective, it is recommended to switch automatic transmission modes while the engine is running (this will require an assistant, so one person will not be able to carry out two procedures simultaneously).
  10. When fresh oil begins to flow out of the hose, the engine is turned off, and the torque converter is filled with new lubricating fluid, which “squeezes out” the remnants of the old one.
  11. After about 4 liters have drained, the engine is turned off and a similar volume is again added through the dipstick hole. You should not fill it up any more, otherwise air may get into the torque converter, which can cause a number of problems with the automatic transmission.
  12. The procedure is repeated until only clean liquid begins to pour out of the hose. The total volume of liquid required will be 10-12 liters.
  13. The return hose is screwed into place.
  14. The transmission fluid level is checked again. If it is normal, all removed parts are installed back.

Difference between automatic transmission oil changes on other models

But how does the replacement happen? transmission oil on other Nissan Infiniti models, including FX37, G25, S50, M35X, EX35, G25, QX56 and other “adjacent” editions? Are there any differences in the procedure itself?

Generally speaking, no, there are essentially no differences. Nissan, like most automakers, is striving to simplify production in order to produce more cars while maintaining their quality.

However, it is also impossible to say that there are no differences in particulars when changing the automatic transmission oil on an Infiniti FX37. This primarily concerns spare parts and oil. When purchasing replacement oil filters for transmissions and new lubricating fluid, you must inform the dealer for which model the consumables are being purchased and the year of manufacture of the vehicle. All this can affect the parameters of the purchased part and oil.

The FX series of the famous Infiniti brand has come a short way from the first prototype to the production model, which appeared in showrooms in 2003. After 5 years, the second generation car was presented to the public.

The Infiniti FX35 is a classic cross-country SUV, positioned as a car for active people, mainly for young people, which is facilitated by the rather aggressive exterior of the model, somewhat reminiscent of the contours of a sports car. Sales of Infiniti FX35 in Russia started in 2006. Although this model cannot be called super popular, many of our compatriots became its owners, paying tribute to the reliability and elitism of the brand.

Of course, the lack of a sufficient number of specialists involved in the maintenance of Infiniti cars has made visiting car repair shops quite an expensive pleasure. Therefore, many owners carry out routine maintenance that does not require the use of expensive equipment on their own. Among such activities is changing the oil in the Infinity FX35 automatic transmission, which, although carried out relatively rarely, requires a fairly serious attitude.

When to change

All modern cars, equipped with an automatic transmission, are considered maintenance-free in this aspect. This means that the one filled at the factory does not need to be changed during the entire period of operation.

Harsh reality completely refutes this thesis. A gearbox, especially an automatic one, is a technically very complex unit, which has a lot of rubbing parts. Without lubrication or if its quality is inadequate, they very quickly fail. Aggressive driving, unfavorable external factors and other reasons contribute to the deterioration of the lubricating qualities of the oil, so its timely replacement will significantly increase the service life.

Experienced motorists claim that the ATF oil in the Infinity FX35 automatic transmission should be changed every 50 thousand kilometers, checking the level and quality of the transmission fluid every 10 thousand kilometers.

How to check the oil level in an Infiniti FX35 automatic transmission

The FX35/FX55 models are equipped with a Jatco RE5R05A transmission. This is a fairly reliable unit, but since only powerful rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive Nissan cars are equipped with it, it is a rather rare guest in our country. For this reason, we present an algorithm that allows you to find out how to do it yourself in an Infinity FX35 automatic transmission:

  • place the car on a flat horizontal surface;
  • warm up the car by starting the engine;
  • switch the selector to each position with a slight delay while pressing the brake pedal, stop at position “P”;
  • carefully examine the transmission for fluid leaks;
  • Using a 10mm wrench, remove the plastic engine cover;
  • Using the same tool, loosen the bolt securing the dipstick;
  • check the transmission fluid level when running at idle power unit. To do this, remove the dipstick, carefully wipe it with a lint-free cloth, insert it back into the neck and remove it again. The oil level should be within the COLD mark at lubricant 30 – 50° C;
  • if the level is insufficient, add oil into the dipstick hole;
  • tighten the bolt and install the engine cover;
  • We warm up the car again by driving around the city for a distance of 10 - 15 kilometers;
  • We repeat the procedure for checking the oil level in the Infinity FX35 automatic transmission, but this time we look at the HOT mark.

At the same time, do not forget to check the quality of the fluid: fresh lubricant has a reddish tint; the darker the color, the longer the box will be used without replacing the transmission fluid. The presence of the smell of burnt sunflower oil indicates burning of the clutches, if there are metal particles in the lubricant - this indicates the deplorable condition of the box parts and the need to carry out the procedure for replacing the fuel fluid.

How to choose an oil change

According to the manual, Nissan's ATF Matic J fluid is poured into the Infinity FX35 box. Experts do not recommend using analogues from other manufacturers, even if they indicate full compatibility at the specification level - all japanese boxes very sensitive to other additive compositions.

When performing a partial replacement, you will need about 4 liters of transmission fluid for an automatic transmission; for a complete replacement, you need to purchase about 11 liters ( filling capacity– 10.3 liters).

Sequencing

The partial replacement procedure is quite simple, but in this case it is possible to replace only 4 liters of fluid out of 10, which, if there are signs of severe contamination, will not provide a long-term significant improvement in the lubricating characteristics of the oil. Performing several partial replacements can improve this indicator, and the procedure for replacing the Infiniti FX35 itself is performed in the following sequence:

  • we install the car on a pit (overpass, lift);
  • dismantle the box protection;
  • We place the prepared waste container under the drain hole;
  • unscrew the plug, wait until the oil is completely drained, screw the plug back into place;
  • remove the automatic transmission oil pan (you should unscrew all the bolts except the two located in the middle of the long sides, then very carefully tighten them too so that when removing the pan, the remaining oil does not leak onto your head);
  • dismantle the mesh filter, it is advisable to remember or write down the location of the parts so that there are no problems during the reverse procedure;
  • thoroughly clean the pan itself, the magnets located on it, the mesh filter from dirt, change the pan gasket;
  • install everything in reverse order;
  • Using a 10mm wrench, remove the plastic motor casing, find the dipstick, and unscrew the fixing bolt with the same tool;
  • we take out the dipstick and pour into its hole exactly as much transmission fluid as the waste leaked out, however, after filling, be sure to check the level on the dipstick (by the marks we check on cold oil, by the marks - on hot oil, from 60 ° C);
  • we start the engine, let it run a little, move the selector lever through all modes (from P to D and back with a slight delay);
  • repeat the level check with the engine running.

To carry out a repeated partial replacement, you need to drive 500 - 1000 km.

If you want to produce complete replacement, there are two options: do it at a specialized service station, which will probably cost a pretty penny, or try to perform the procedure for replacing the transmission fluid yourself, without using expensive equipment.

The idea is to get the pump to only draw new fluid from the transmission pan through the dipstick filler neck. In this case, the waste must be poured into prepared containers.

How to change the oil in an Infinity FX35 automatic transmission:

It is advisable to carry out a similar procedure every 60,000 km, and if you are a follower of an aggressive driving style, then twice as often.

In this article we will tell and clearly show how to correctly change the oil in an automatic transmission using the example of a 2009 FX35 (S51 body).

Practice shows that partial replacement Automatic transmission oil does not give results for long. The oil again quickly darkens due to the fact that no more than 3.8 liters can be drained (out of 11 liters in the system). All the dirt settles in the pan (almost 1 liter of the dirtiest oil, which can only be removed by removing the pan). We recommend changing the oil every 50 thousand mileage. This will extend the life of the automatic transmission!

For this you will need:

11L Matic-S oil (999MP-MTS00P)

Pan gasket (31397-1XJ0A)

Disposable washers (for drain plug and level)

- Mandatory availability of diagnostic equipment to monitor oil temperature. Since this model does not have a dipstick to control the oil level. The Nissan Consult 3 plus was used in our report.

And so let's start replacing.

Raise the car on a lift to drain the oil and remove the automatic transmission pan.

We clean the drain plug of the pan with a metal brush to remove rust and dirt on the pan and plug.

Unscrew the drain plug. Draining the oil from the automatic transmission

In the photo you can see how black it is, and this despite the fact that half a year ago a partial oil change was carried out on this car.

After all the fasteners are unscrewed, remove the pan. At first glance everything is beautiful.

But if you look closely at the inside of the tray, you will notice metal shavings on the magnets and a dirty surface at the bottom of the tray.

We remove the magnets from the surface of the pallet. These photos clearly show and understand why the oil will darken very quickly again!

The last part we need to extract is oil filter. It is a metal mesh. There is no point in changing it, just washing it is enough. When removing the filter you need to be very careful, because... the fasteners that secure it are of different lengths. For convenience, it is better to choose the direction of disassembly (for example, counterclockwise and fold the fasteners in order on a clean surface).

After all the fasteners around the perimeter are unscrewed, remove the oil filter. The photo shows a dark coating on the filter housing (exactly the same on the filter mesh itself).

Then wash the pan and filter. Let's start with the filter. It is best to do this with carb. cleaner (liquid for cleaning carburetor).

The photo shows that after cleaning the filter became like new. Then we screw it into place, do not forget to tighten the fasteners in the reverse order of disassembly.

I wash the tray and magnets with gasoline. Blow with air and wipe thoroughly with a cloth. We install the magnets in place. On the removed pan (in the lower left part on a small podium), the oil level control hole is clearly visible. This tube rises almost to the level where the pan joins the automatic transmission housing.

We fasten the pallet in place and lower the car to the ground. First, change the drain plug washer and tighten the plug itself.

After this, remove the air intake. And we’ll cover the left fender of the car (on the side we’ll be working on) so as not to scratch the paintwork.

And then we pull the body out of the guides air filter. We are interested in the return hose of the automatic transmission oil cooling circuit; we disconnect the place circled in red. The rubber hose that was put on the radiator is the return through which we will pour oil into the box (this hose is freely blown).

Fill one liter of oil through the adapter

under pressure by hand. The adapter is inserted into

hose disconnected from the radiator (circled

red circle with number 1). So in it

pour 6 liters of oil ( or rather 5.7l American

packaging 946ml). The process took us a long time

20-30 minutes.

Then we take another hose (with a cross-section like

original) and put it on the radiator and take it out

higher (the end of the hose in the photo is circled in red

circle with number 2). We'll need it for draining.

old oil from the system (from the torque converter)

by displacing the automatic transmission oil pump after

starting the engine.

We start the engine for about 10-12 seconds (during this time 1 liter of old, dirty oil is displaced), as shown in the 1st photo. This can be done safely, without worrying that the left air flow sensor in the direction of travel is missing; the error can then be cleared by a consultant. Then again fill the automatic transmission with 1 liter of new oil, as shown in the 2nd photo. It doesn't hurt to put a rag down to soak up the oil in case you accidentally spill it. This procedure must be done at least 5 times (drain/fill) so that at the end (at about the 5th liter drained) clean oil begins to flow out. In the 3rd photo, we automated the process of filling the oil (if you loosely insert the watering can into the filling adapter so that there is air access, the oil is filled very quickly by gravity, in the same time as squeezing it out by hand).

Once this procedure is complete, calculate that there is approximately 5.5L of Matic-S left in the system!

This photo clearly shows that each subsequent liter displaced from the torque converter became cleaner. On the right in the photo, the oil was taken from the last 0.5 liter displaced. The last time we drained 0.5 liters so that 5.5 liters remained in the system!

There is very little left to complete the work and the most interesting thing! We need to connect a consultant, remove errors in the engine and check the ATF level in the automatic transmission.

And so, we connect the Nissan Consult 3 plus to the diagnostic connector and turn on the ignition. The convenience of this device is that it can work via Bluetooth. At this moment, you can walk with a laptop around the car or under the car, and are not connected to the consultant by wires.

The final step is to check the oil level in the automatic transmission.

Since the characteristics of the working fluid automatic transmission transmission fluid (ATF) largely depend on its temperature; to check the temperature of the automatic transmission fluid (ATF), we use the CONSULT-III PLUS diagnostic tool.

We check the ATF level as follows:

1. Start the engine.

2. Raise the car on a lift.

3. We go to the date sheet of the automatic transmission with the help of a consultant. We wait until the temperature of the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) is approximately 40-45C.

5. If everything was done correctly, ATF will flow from the overflow hole. As soon as the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) begins to drip, tighten the oil pan overflow plug to the specified torque.

6. We lower the car, the work of replacing ATF in the automatic transmission is completed.
