Recommended engine oil for Honda Cr-v. What oil to choose for a Honda engine The best engine oil for a Honda

10.12.2020

It's time to change the engine oil in a car engine: Honda oil will be the best choice for this car brand. The main recommendations for changing the lubricant, taking into account all the nuances and details, are usually given by the manufacturer - Honda Motor. You can change the lubricant either at their service center, or on your own, following the recommendations of experienced motorists.

Features of the car

When it comes to Honda engines, they almost always mean forced motors, which are designed to work in hard mode without installing additional equipment. At the same time, there are models with belt motors and chain ones. The latter appeared on the market in 2001 and the most famous brands equipped with these engines are brands called Honda Fit (L13A, L15A, B16B) and Honda Accord (F20B, F23A). And among the belts, the Honda Civic (D15B) and the Honda h rv (D16A) are popular.

Caring for your engine starts with changing the engine oil. The manufacturer recommends changing the engine oil every 7,000-8,000 km. This approach is typical for Japanese maintenance services, although oil manufacturers claim that the resource of the fluid itself is designed for 40,000 km . On the other hand, almost all Honda owners know that the recommended engine oil change times in the instructions do not always coincide with the realities of our car operating conditions.

It becomes necessary to replace filters after the same 8,000 km, otherwise the engine is at too great a risk. Changing the engine oil and filters is usually carried out at the same time, so it is more profitable from an economic point of view.

Self-diagnosis and selection of lubricants

To figure out on your own when to change the oil for a Honda, you need to get such a useful device as a dipstick for measuring the engine oil level. So, for example, for a Honda chord or a Euro chord, just like for a Honda jazz, it is recommended to measure the oil level in the engine with a dipstick, after letting the engine warm up properly.

They also do before changing the oil in the automatic transmission. The probe is wiped with a rag, then lowered into the bay hole. If the liquid level on the dipstick is close to the lower division, then this means that the liquid needs to be added. Experts recommend the use of API SG, SH or SJ SAE engine oil for cars of the Honda Accord series (in particular, the 7 or Euro Accord). The viscosity should be selected based on the climatic conditions in which the machine is operated.

For example, it could be 0W-20, 0W-40, 5W-30, or 15W-40. In this matter, it is best to find out the details from those who have long been using this car brand in the region you are interested in. The answer can be found on the forums or by contacting customer service. For Honda jazz, this list is also relevant, so you can focus on it. But if your car is of Japanese, Chinese or Taiwanese origin (second generation in particular), you may have to buy original engine oil for Honda A3 / B3 or A5 / B5 according to ACEA standard.

Synthetic oils, formulated with energy efficiency in mind, already comply with Euro 4 and Euro 5 regulations, making them more environmentally friendly and cost effective. Compliance with the euro standard is mandatory for all cars imported into Russia since the beginning of 2014. It is worth considering that European standards applied to the quality of oils are significantly stricter than American ones.

It is not recommended to mix oils from different manufacturers, no matter how well-known the brands are. This is especially true for mixing domestic and foreign lubricants. For Honda, in principle, oils that are produced in Russia or the CIS countries are not suitable.

Failure to do so may result in engine damage.

Changing the engine oil

To change the engine oil in a Honda engine, you will need from 3.5 to 4 liters of oil, depending on whether work is being done on changing the filter or disassembling the engine. In this case, it is advisable to take liquid with a margin, since the flow rate may even be slightly more than 4 liters and you will have to add a little to the desired level from another container.

To change the oil yourself, you will need to use the garage, which has a pit or overpass for the car. This will make it easier and faster to change the oil. To change the oil in the Honda engine, you will need to warm it up. But you do not need to bring the oil to a very hot state. It is enough to ensure that it flows out easily.

Climbing under the car, you need to find and remove the cover from the drain hole, substituting a container for used oil under it. The cover is unscrewed with a wrench. Try not to put your hands under the heated oil. After 30 min. the oil should drain completely.

After 30 minutes. it will be possible to change the oil filter and the gasket for the drain hole. At the last stage, the required amount of new oil is poured through the filler hole. The main thing is that the mark on the dipstick is not below the minimum. To make sure everything is in order, it is enough to carry out a test drive and once again inspect the underside of the car. If no leaks were found, then everything was done correctly. But if you have doubts about your abilities, it is better not to risk it and entrust your car to specialists.

In cases where an oil change is required in the hr v variator, only original oxols are used, marked as "HMMF" or "CVTF". Those who doubt which oil to pour should take into account that, in addition to the above options, there are no other analogues that completely replace the original from the manufacturer. HMMF contains not only the necessary cooling additives, but also unique properties of components that simultaneously support two opposite functions: lubrication and friction enhancement.

Such a composition is typical only for original oils, so which oil to fill in the variator is perhaps not the question that needs to be pondered a lot.

Change the lubricant in the variator

Changing the oil is a fairly straightforward process. In order to pour new oil into a Honda fit variator, for example, it is not at all necessary to contact a specialized service. It is most convenient, if possible, to raise the car to the desired level, but if not, then you can get by by raising the front of the car. It is very important to first warm up the engine, and only after the cooling fan starts at least once, turn it off. After removing the shield, it is necessary to unscrew the plug covering the drain hole to drain the old oil.

This could lead to damage.

The plug is then replaced using a new sealing washer and oil is poured into the variator. Then the mudguard is also returned to its place. In order to replace the oil in a Honda fit, you will need a little more than 3 liters of lubricant. But if the fluid in the variator has not changed for a long time or it is already quite old, it may happen that you need to do this operation 2-3 times every 200 km. For new CVTs belonging to the second generation 2013-2015 release, the improved HCF-2 grease is used, which meets the Euro standards. At the same time, oil change is recommended after the vehicle has driven 35,000 km.

When a problem such as increased oil consumption in a Honda engine appears, the first thing car owners do is to replace the valve stem seals. The main function of such a cap is to pass only the small amount of oil required to lubricate the valve. But over time, the caps wear out, and therefore the oil consumption increases dramatically.

Of course, some motorists can replace the valve stem seals on their own, but for those who do not have the necessary knowledge and experience, as well as a special tool for this kind of repair, it is better to contact a car service. Moreover, the prices for such operations are not that high.

So where does engine care begin? With oil change. Since we are dealing with revving engines, the oil change period usual for other cars - 10,000 km - has been reduced to 7-8 thousand kilometers. This is what the Honda manufacturers themselves recommend. some oil manufacturers assure that only their oil can protect the engine up to 40,000 km without loss of properties. But this is not true, since the aging process of the oil has not been canceled - even the most expensive oil completely loses its lubricating properties for about 15,000 km.

Which oil should you choose for your Honda vehicle? The manufacturer, for a belt engine, recommends oil of the SL / SM / SJ class with parameters 5w30, 10w30, and for a chain engine - 0w20. What do these numbers mean? So, the first number - 5 (10, 0) - is an indicator of the viscosity of the oil at cold temperatures. The lower the first digit, the more fluid the oil will be at negative temperatures. For example, if the 10w30 oil begins to thicken, and as a result, lose its properties at a temperature of -35 C0, then with 0w20 this will happen already at -43 ... -45 C0.

The most optimal choice for a car operated in Russia will be oil with an index of 5w ... for belt engines and 0w ... for chain engines. The use of oil index 0w ... for belt motors will do more harm than good. The reason is that the viscosity of this oil is very low initially - and in a hot and revving Honda engine, it will not always be able to create a sufficiently strong oil film on the rubbing surface. 5w30 (5w40) is the most suitable oil for such engines. The second digit (number) of the index indicates the viscosity of the oil in a hot environment. The higher the number, the higher the temperature at which the oil does not lose its viscosity. Here, the indicators can be very arbitrary. You just need to remember one rule - the less engine wear, the more correct it is to choose the oil recommended by the manufacturer. So, for example, with runs up to 100,000 km, you can safely fill the engine with the 5w30 or 0w20 oil recommended by the manufacturer.
With a mileage of more than 100,000 km, micro gaps and depletions appear in the engine, and then it makes sense to fill in oil with a higher second indicator, for example 5w40, or 0w30, and so on. With low mileage, taking oil with a higher second indicator - the actual overpayment of money - will not be of any particular benefit to the car.

Which oil manufacturer should you prefer? Since 2007, Honda has officially recommended oil produced by the Exxon-Mobil concern for its engines, - Mobil 1. Despite the fact that there are a huge number of oil manufacturers on the market, among which there are such famous ones as Castrol, Shell, BP, Chevron, Texaco, LiquiMoly , we would not recommend deviating from the manufacturer's recommendation. The fact is that even the budgetary representative of Exxon-Mobil ESSO oil is not stable in a Honda engine. Tests have shown that Castrol and Shell oils have a very high percentage of waste in Honda engines. Oils manufactured by Chevron, Eneos have a lower percentage of waste, but at the same time they leave varnish deposits in the engine. Korean oils ZIC and Dragon are more stable in terms of burnout and varnish deposits, but, unfortunately, have very little resistance to aging processes. An oil change of 5000 km has a significant effect on engine performance for the better. LiquiMoly oils showed excellent results at the end of the tests, in many ways exceeding the original requirements. BP, Texaco oils have not been tested, so we cannot say absolutely nothing about them. The use of oils from Russian manufacturers in Honda is highly undesirable. The reason for this is the high percentage of waste, deposits and coke. This does not indicate the low quality of the oil, but about its incompatibility with Honda engines.

... engine up to 100,000 km, belt - 5w30 (5w40). Manufacturer: Honda (original), Mobil 1, LiquiMoly

Engine over 100,000 km, belt - 5w40 (5w50). Manufacturer: Honda (original), Mobil 1, LiquiMoly

Engine up to 100,000 km, chain - 0w20. Manufacturer: Honda (original)

Engine over 100,000 km, chain - 0w30 (0w40). Manufacturer: Mobil 1, LiquiMoly.

I would like to make a reservation right away that these parameters are not the ultimate truth, but it would be most correct to adhere to them if we are talking about a car with “honest” mileage, which is under the supervision of competent craftsmen. Timely and correctly carried out oil change significantly extends the life of the Honda engine.

The next item that we would like to consider is the oil filter. There are many manufacturers of oil filters for Honda on the market, but in principle, if we do not consider such rare models as S2000, NSX, and Legend, all Honda, since 1992, have two types of 15400-PLC oil filters (RTA, PLM) - ***, and 15400-PR3 - ***. The seats for both filters are absolutely the same, their differences lie in the shape of the filter body itself - the first are more elongated and narrower, the second, on the contrary, are shorter and wider. The quality of the original filters may also vary slightly from each other. For example, RTA filters differ for the better from PLCs, and those, in turn, from PLM. But this does not mean that the 15400-PLM-A01 filter is the worst filter. For example, it is much better than any duplicate filter. When changing the oil in Honda, it is better not to save money and put an original filter that will not allow forcing due to a jammed valve in the cold, and will not leak, ensuring an even fit over the entire area.

Even a single fill of the wrong oil can damage the engine and fuel system. So what kind of oil can you pour safely into a Honda engine? Let's try to figure it out together in this article.

The best oil for the entire Honda line

Some car owners, when choosing lubricants for their iron friend, are guided by the recommendations of friends, colleagues and reviews on the Internet. But in fact, first of all, it is required to take into account the technical indicators of the machine.

Honda engines are available in two types:

 • belt;
 • chain.

For the first, oils with the following markings will be suitable:

 • 5w30;
 • 10w30.

And for the Honda chain engine it is better to purchase consumables with other numbers on the package:

 • 0w20;
 • 5w20.

In the listed combinations, each number has its own meaning:

 • the first is responsible for the viscosity of the oil at subzero temperatures - the lower the number, the more resistant the lubricant to cold weather;
 • the second, on the contrary, displays how the oil behaves in the heat - a higher figure in the marking "speaks" of maintaining the original degree of viscosity at marks much higher than zero.

Wear is also important when choosing an oil for Honda engines. In a new car, it is better to pour only what is recommended by Honda Japan.

Later, when the degree of wear will increase in the engine "Honda" gaps and burrs will appear, it will be advisable to purchase materials with higher rates. This approach will extend the life of the engine and save the driver from unpleasant surprises.

But besides the listed parameters and nuances, the car owner should focus on the list of products recommended by the manufacturer.

Honda Japan has been recommending to car owners for 12 years mobil 1 series engine oils... They are produced both for the Japanese market and for the Russian one. But it is worth considering that motor oils for internal use in Japan are somewhat more expensive due to the higher quality of the raw materials. Although you can find a significant plus in this - most Russian car owners can afford even the most expensive Mobil 1.

The manufacturer warns that it is strictly forbidden to use Russian lubricants when changing the oil! They give a large percentage of deposits and coke, which does not at all indicate their low quality. The reason is different - Honda Japan claims that Russian oils are not even 10% compatible with the original engines of their brand.

Oil for every Honda model

The Honda concern produces different car models, so each has its own types of recommended lubricants. Several options are discussed below.

Oil for Honda CR-V ("Honda Cr-v")

For "Honda SRV" you can use 2 groups of oils:

 • synthetic;
 • semi-synthetic.

The first group can safely include 4 types of lubricants:

 • HONDA ULTRA LEO 0W20 SN - actively recommended by the carmaker and provides better protection against friction;
 • MOBIL 1 ESP X2 0W-20 - Honda Japan approves this product for its good lubricating and protective properties, and it is also economical;
 • RAVENOL LONGLIFE LSG SAE 5W-30 - motorists often bypass this brand, but it gives a very strong film that protects the motor from internal damage;
 • GENERAL MOTORS DEXOS 2 LONGLIFE 5W30 - a good quality product at a reasonable price.

The following semi-synthetic materials can be poured into the Honda engine without fear:

 • HONDA ULTRA LTD 5W30 SN - the original product does not change its properties when used in a wide temperature range and reliably protects against friction;
 • MOBIS PREMIUM GASOLINE 5W-20 - this oil for the Honda SRV engine performs well in case of sudden temperature changes;
 • TOTACHI ECO GASOLINE 5W-30 - of all the brands presented, it is the best protector against corrosion and friction.

Oil for Honda Accord

This car model is extremely popular in Russia, but the oil change still raises many questions among the owners. Taking into account the age of the machine and the wear of the motor, the following lubricants are recommended:

 • TOTAL QUARTZ 9000 FUTURE GF-5 0W20 - the synthetic product does an excellent job of protecting components and systems from wear;
 • TOTAL QUARTZ 9000 ENERGY 0W30 - confidently copes with cold start and oxidation protection, also helps to reduce fuel consumption;
 • TOTAL QUARTZ INEO MC3 5W-30 - maintains the exhaust cleaning system in perfect condition and meets all European standards.

When using the listed products when changing the oil in the Honda engine, it is not recommended to add third-party additives. The required substances have already been added to the oil by the manufacturer.

Engine oil for Honda Civic

To understand which oil is safe to fill in a Honda Civic engine, you first need to decide on its type:

 • synthetic;
 • semi-synthetic.

And in that, and in the other groups, there are suitable options. If you plan to use synthetics, then the choice should be stopped on the following brands:

 • Honda Ultra LEO 0W20 SN - due to the highest base number is considered the best option;
 • SHELL HELIX ULTRA 0W-40 - breaks all popularity records due to high quality and attractive price;
 • IDEMITSU ZEPRO ECO MEDALIST 0W-20 - perfectly protects against wear, so it is advisable to purchase it for a car with experience.

Among semi-synthetics, motorists' attention is worthy of:

 • HONDA ULTRA LTD 5W30 SN - a clear leader among the options recommended by the concern;
 • LIQUI MOLY TOP TEC 4200 5W-30 - reliability and quality are its main characteristics;
 • GENERAL MOTORS SEMI SYNTHETIC 10W-40 - the best option for buyers with an average income;
 • MANNOL MOLIBDEN BENZIN 10W-40 - the lowest cost among analogs with similar characteristics.

Oil table for all other Honda models

When choosing oil for engines for Honda cars, it is better to rely not on your own preferences, but on the authoritative opinion of the engineers of the auto concern. Over the years, the specialists have gained invaluable experience, on the basis of which they compiled the following table.

How often do you need to change the oil in a Honda engine?

The frequency of changing the oil in the engine of Honda vehicles depends on many factors:

 • year of issue;
 • mileage;
 • worn out motor;
 • season and so on.

The auto concern recommends replacing every 7000-8000 kilometers traveled. This is the maximum permissible maximum, which can be reduced if the machine is actively used or cannot boast of good technical condition.

 • aging of engine oils for the Honda engine - it is impossible to create a lubricant that does not lose its properties over time;
 • the need to change the oil filter.

Car owners are often interested in how much oil should be added to a Honda car engine in order to avoid further refills. The answer to this question depends on the volume of the motor. But on average, specialists pour 3.5 liters.

If the owner makes the replacement himself, and not in a service center, then it is advisable for him, after a comprehensive cleaning, to fill in as much oil as it enters exactly to the middle between the minimum and maximum marks.

In order not to make a mistake with the choice of lubricants, you can use tabular data.

Tests carried out several years ago have shown that such popular brands as Castrol, Shell, Chevron, Eneos give a high percentage of waste and leave varnish deposits. And ZIC and Dragon do not adequately protect the engine from aging. When using the listed brands, the replacement has to be carried out already at 5000 kilometers, otherwise the risk of serious damage increases.

There is an opinion among motorists that Honda is very capricious in operation. But in fact, it is enough to follow your iron friend and know exactly what oil to pour into the Honda engine in order to have a long time and with pleasure.

There are many types of lubricants on the market for specialty vehicle maintenance products today. Original oils produced by large engineering companies are popular. Such formulations have proven to be of high quality, low consumption and durability in use.

One of the popular formulations is oil 5W30 "Honda"... This product has a certain set of characteristics. Before changing the lubricant for the motor, it is necessary to consider the features of the new oil.

Features:

Honda engine oil is an original oil developed and produced by the company of the same name for its cars. This tool is most suitable for such designs. When developing it, even minor features of the operation of Honda engines are taken into account. This allows the lubricant to provide maximum engine protection against adverse effects.

Honda oils are manufactured by a Japanese brand in accordance with international standards. In this case, only the newest, high-tech scientific developments are used.

For the domestic market, the company "Honda" produces oils that are not afraid of work even under adverse environmental conditions. These are fully adapted trains to the conditions of Russian roads. For cars of the Japanese manufacturer, there is no better oil on sale.

Basic properties of oils

The main characteristics of oil "Honda" 5W30talk about the high quality of the products presented. In the production of such products, the manufacturer constantly improves the formulas of its lubricating compositions. This allows not only to fully meet the modern requirements of consumers, quality standards, but also to outstrip them.

One of the main properties of the presented grease is its ability to maintain high pumping rates even at low temperatures. Starting the engine in winter becomes easy and safe for mechanisms. The oil quickly spreads through the system, preventing mechanical wear of the rubbing surfaces.

The presented oil has a pronounced antifriction effect. It ensures the stable operation of the motor even under loaded conditions that arise when driving on city roads. The composition is protected from oxidation processes, prevents corrosion on metal engine parts.

Varieties

Original Honda oil 5W30 includes several types of funds. They differ in composition and additives. Hydrocracking oil of the Ultra series is popular among drivers. You can buy a similar composition at a price of 2800-2900 rubles. for 4 liters. A canister with a capacity of 1 liter costs about 450 rubles.

Better quality is considered a series made on a synthetic basis. These include Ultimate Full formulations as well as HFS-E. The first type of product can be purchased at a price of 760 rubles / liter. The HFS-E series is sold at a price of 650-670 rubles / liter.

The composition differs both in the base base and in the set of additives. The correct type of oil must be purchased for each type of motor. In doing so, it is recommended to consider the manufacturer's recommendations. Unsuitable lubricants can damage the motor. First of all, you need to pay attention to the base of the oil.

Base oil

Oil "Honda" 5W30 (synthetics, hydrocracking) is made from high quality base oils. Many varieties of motor products are created from artificially created base components. Such compositions are characterized by high fluidity. This allows the use of synthetic oils of the appropriate viscosity grade even in severe frost.

Synthetic compounds are more expensive than semisynthetics and hydrocracking. Such funds are poured into the crankcase of a new type of motors. These oils are not suitable for older engines with high mileage. They can damage such mechanisms. When pouring synthetics into an old motor, the seals can collapse. Through microcracks, oil will flow out of the system. Its consumption will be great.

Some drivers prefer the cheaper hydrocracked, semi-synthetic formulations. In this case, you will need to change the oil more often. In terms of their performance characteristics, such lubricants are significantly inferior to synthetics.

Additives

Motor oil "Honda" 5W30 (synthetics, hydrocracking) include a number of additives. These are high quality ingredients that improve the quality of the product. First of all, these are detergents that remove dirt from the surfaces of the system. They keep carbon particles in themselves, preventing them from re-settling.

Also, the additive package contains anti-corrosion, antioxidant complexes. Thanks to them, the lubricant does not deteriorate for a long time, and also prevents the appearance of traces of corrosion on metal parts.

Anti-seize additives resist mechanical damage to rubbing surfaces during engine operation. The engine is protected against the negative effects of high temperatures or pressures. Microcracks and scratches do not appear on the metal.

The additive package contains only new, high-tech components. They are characterized by a low content of sulfur and phosphorus. This improves the environmental performance during use of the product.

Viscosity grade

Engine oil "Honda" 4 liters 5W30 (synthetics, hydrocracking) belong to the category of all-season agents. They can be used both in summer and winter. The products of the Japanese manufacturer are manufactured in accordance with international standards.

The SAE 5W30 viscosity grade can be applied in most of our country. The first part of the 5w marking says that the oil can be used in winter at temperatures down to -25 ºС. However, according to the drivers, the car can be easily started at lower temperatures using the presented lubricant.

The second number in the marking indicates the oil viscosity index in summer. This product can be used at temperatures up to +30 ºС. Subject to all the manufacturer's requirements, the presented composition is firmly held on all elements of the system. The film does not tear and protects the system.

Each car manufacturer in the vehicle manual prescribes the characteristics of a lubricant that is suitable in terms of parameters for a specific type of engine. In this article, we will tell you about the recommended engine oil for the Honda CR-V.

 • 0W-20; 0W-30; 0W-40; 5W-30; 5W-40, in the temperature range from -30 0 С (or less) to + 40 0 С (or more);
 • 10W-30; 10W-40 at a temperature of -20 0 С to + 40 0 С (and above).
 • 15W-40 at temperatures from -15 0 С to + 40 0 С (and above).

Conclusion

When buying a car oil, you need to pay attention not only to the base base (synthetics, semi-synthetics, mineral water), but also to take into account the viscosity parameters of the lubricant. Liquids for winter and summer have different fluidity, they are poured depending on the season. The former provide engine start-up without warming up, the latter protect the motor from overheating. Recommended engine oil for Honda CR-V is indicated by car engineers in the manual. Its use will have a positive effect on the engine and lubrication system.

In the instructions for the car, the manufacturer insists on the use of a proprietary car oil, indicates that filling with various kinds of additives is unacceptable.
