Comparison test of Porsche Cayene, BMW X6 and Infiniti FX 50

"Why go into the mud on such cars, because they were not created for this at all?" - the inquisitive reader will ask and will be, in general, right. But what does not happen in life ... Actually, it is for these cases that powerful high-speed crossovers receive an "off-road vaccination." But which of the three today's heroes of our test "vaccine" is better, we have to figure it out

The scenario for finding out the off-road abilities of our wards was suggested by life itself. Once my friends and I went to a picnic in the most ordinary, let's say, average SUV. Everything was familiar, if not banal: we arrived at the place, settled down, fried a barbecue, tasted ... One misfortune - while we were peacefully doing business in the open air, enjoying the fresh air and a wonderful view of a small lake, the weather turned bad. Clouds came, fleeting but strong summer rain fell. Can you guess what I'm driving at? Right! I had to crawl back on the soggy primer and force the large puddle that had formed after the rain. In it we found ourselves adventures.

Sound familiar? That's just it! Something similar happened, probably, with everyone. So we decided to repeat that "barbecue route" during our traditional big test, especially since three very "tasty" cars from the driver's point of view have already been selected for it.

However, before telling how this little reenactment ended, I propose to be distracted directly by the test objects themselves. As you already understood, this time they were crossovers - Infiniti FX, Porsche Cayenne and BMW X6.

The usual ritual of acquaintance with cars, which, of course, begins with an examination of the passenger compartment, has dragged on. This is not surprising - it took a fair amount of time to sort out all the optional stuffing that is stuffed with each of the trio of luxury crossovers.


His lordship

The light and very "airy" interior of the Infiniti FX50, trimmed in leather and wood, seems to envelop those sitting in front. In the driver's seat, at the same time, a feeling of spaciousness is created, and at the same time, everything you need is nearby - literally at hand. The front panel architecture with "deep relief" is quite successful. On the center console, the climate and music controls are logically grouped. The combination stands out for the Infiniti's signature oval analog clock, and is crowned by a large color display that provides navigation, infotainment, and rear and side view cameras.

Adjacent to the display is a whole "keyboard" and a controller washer that controls the onboard navigation and media systems. This placement of the control interface makes it easier to visually control all the settings being made, but if you have to dig into the menu for a long time, your hand gets tired on the weight.

The three-spoke steering wheel is equipped with paddle shifters and Bose audio controls, which include a 6-disc radio with a changer, D / A converter and 11 speakers. The dashboard is effective and informative at the same time. Large dials with chrome edging have a permanent white-violet Fine Vision backlight and are easy to read in any light, and auxiliary information is displayed on two analog pointers and an LCD in the middle.

The back will obviously be comfortable only for two. This is hinted at by the shape of the rear sofa, equipped with only two full-fledged headrests and a tiny third in the center. Those seated here have their own ceiling-mounted video monitor for watching DVDs. The rear seat is split 2: 3 and can be folded out of the luggage compartment. However, the trunk itself is not large for a car of this class and is devoid of additional amenities such as curtains and cargo fasteners.


Infiniti FX50

The "American Japanese" Infiniti FX is the most expensive car in this test. He can only handle light off-road, all difficult sections of which the car will take "in motion".

Simple symmetrical differentials (D) are installed in the front and rear axles. If the electronics detects the difference in the angular speeds of rotation of the wheels, the differential lock imitation system (TM) comes into action: the discs are braked with the required effort, and the torque does not "go away" through the running wheel.

The multi-plate friction clutch (M) is responsible for the distribution of traction between the axles. With straight, uniform movement on a flat dry road, almost all the torque is transmitted to the rear wheels - unlike the "junior" Infiniti crossovers, the power unit of the FX model is installed longitudinally. For the same reason, engineers have provided a gear chain to transfer power to the front axle drive shaft.

if the range of imitation of the rear axle differential locks is selected, but the torque continues to be wasted, the electronics that control the friction clutch comes into play. Up to 50% of the tractive effort can be realized through the wheels of the front axle.

At the disposal of the driver, however, there are two more means of improving the vehicle's off-road capabilities. First, you can turn off the stabilization system - the VDC off button is located on the panel to the left of the steering column. Secondly, try using the so-called winter mode. The key to activate it is located on the central tunnel next to the automatic transmission selector. The ground clearance of the Infiniti FX is not adjustable, and this is another argument against the off-road use of the car: "geometric" cross-country ability is not at the "height".


Timeless classics

The Porsche Cayenne's interior is a living classic. The traditional design of the dashboard, the layout of the center console corresponding to the classic canons, as well as the rarely found excessive number of indicators in the instrument cluster. For example, you are interested to know what is the current voltage in the on-board network, what is the temperature of the oil in the engine? Hardly ... Well, maybe you will be curious a couple of times and forget about these indicators. Then why are these devices here? Tribute to tradition. As well as the large steering wheel and the ignition switch located to the left of it. The latter is frankly inconvenient. And no matter how much you refer to family roots and all sorts of trademark features, it does not become more convenient from this.

But the seats are very comfortable, made in a sporty style and provide good lateral support. The familiar push-button interface of the media system and the original rocker toggle switches for climate control, suspension and off-road transmission modes are also convenient. But the plastic they are made of contrasts unpleasantly with their blatant cheapness with the luxurious leather upholstery. It's a shame. However, there is a hope that the new owner of the company - Volkswagen - will be able to "pull up" the Porsche interior designers in this indicator. Fortunately, there is someone to learn from: the Audi company, which is part of the concern, has long been out of competition in terms of the quality of interior design, even among the German big three.

As with the Infiniti, the Cayenne's rear row of seats is welcoming to only two passengers. Despite the sufficient space, the sofa itself is profiled for two, and the fact that the third will be superfluous is reminiscent of a small headrest. But in the Porsche, the rear passengers are provided with an individual climate control panel. The trunk is the most spacious among today's three competitors and is equipped with a load securing system.


Porsche Cayenne GTS

On the face of it - a set of transmission elements - the Porsche Cayenne is a full-fledged SUV. By the way, his drive scheme is the same as that of a relative - Volkswagen Touareg.

Simple symmetric differentials (D) are installed in the axles, while a planetary gear (SP) operates in the transfer case, the ratio of the teeth of the gears of which provides a 38:62 thrust distribution in favor of the rear axle.

There is also a center differential lock. For this purpose, an electronically controlled clutch (E) is installed in the transfer case. Interestingly, the degree of blocking can vary from zero to 100%. In the latter case, a rigid connection arises between the axles: the torque is not distributed, and the differential is excluded from work. The latter mode is perfect for off-road driving.

In addition, an optional rear axle differential lock is also offered (it was not installed on the test car). Then the imitation of locking the rear cross-axle differential by the operation of the braking mechanisms is not applied. On the front wheels, a similar system is always installed - it is included in the basic equipment of the car.

If one of the wheels (front or rear axle) starts to slip, the lock simulation system (TM) is activated. After the range of its operation is selected, the center differential lock is activated. It is possible to further increase the tractive effort on the wheel by engaging a reduction gear (PP) in the transfer case.

As a means of improving the parameters of geometric cross-country ability, the driver has a clearance adjustment system.


Bavarian style

The interior of the BMW X6 can be described in just three words: expensive, high quality and gloomy. It is difficult to make any claims to the materials used in the decoration. The level of interior design, fit of all parts, quality of upholstery seams is the highest. But the dark interior with a "minimalist" design really does not inspire optimism. It is not enlivened by the multifunction display at the top of the center console, nor by such interesting details as the high-tech joystick for the transmission selector with indication of the selected mode. However, the interior of the BMW X6 looks much better in light colors.

Instruments BMW X6 seem to be too modest - just a couple of round dials and a display, simple red backlighting. This is especially striking against the background of rivals. The center console also seems empty, as if the car has a poor package. In reality, of course, this is not so - just a fair amount of the functions are available through the iDrive menu. Someone likes this decision - they say, progressively, - someone does not. But the front seats on the "Bavarian" are the most advanced in terms of all kinds of adjustments, settings and tweaks. I would especially like to note the change in the inclination of the upper part of the backrest and the adjustment of the degree of lateral support.

Sitting in the back is also very comfortable, and without any reservations, only two people. There are only two individual chairs, separated by a center console with cup holders and a tray for small items. The trunk is slightly smaller in volume than the Porsche, but it also has a clever load securing system.


BMW X6 xDrive 50i

Unlike its closest relative, the X5 model, the X6 has better off-road properties, although the transmissions of both cars are based on the same proprietary Bavarian xDrive scheme. When driving outside asphalt, the driver will have to rely only on electronic systems: he cannot directly influence the distribution of torque.

In a straight, uniform motion, the tractive effort between the axles is distributed in a ratio of 40:60 (in favor of the rear wheels). This favorably distinguishes the crossover of the Munich company from the overwhelming majority of competitors that do not have an center differential. When road conditions change, the torque distribution range can change from 0: 100 to 50:50.

A simple symmetrical (bevel) differential (D) is installed in the front axle. If the conditions for the adhesion of the front wheels begin to differ (this is expressed in the presence of a difference in their angular velocities), then the system of imitation of the differential lock by the operation of the braking mechanisms (TM) comes into play.

But in the rear axle there is already an active differential (DA), which basically has a free bevel differential. DA is a mechanism capable of increasing the torque supplied to each of the axle shafts with the help of additional planetary gears. This helps to "turn" the car in the limit turn with additional traction on the outer wheel. Off-road, YES successfully replaces the self-locking differential, so that the imitation locking system (TM) is not installed on the rear wheels.

On the X6, only automatic transmissions of a classic hydromechanical design are installed, which improve the off-road capabilities of the machine.


Two go into the gap

On the way to the place where the impromptu "jeep-light" was planned, we overcame different parts of the road: an almost straight multi-lane highway, winding, full of turns, and dirt roads of different quality and condition. In short, almost everything you need to assess the behavior of each car from our dashing trio. Transferring from car to car, each of us made his own "verbal portrait" of the subjects. Well, the first exchange of views took place exactly after the crews moved off the asphalt onto a country road. The debate gave an unexpected result: "And in road disciplines, the Cayenne looks pale against the background of its rivals."

Take dynamic characteristics, for example. We selected competitors with almost the same engine power - the spread was small: from 400 to 407 hp. At the same time, Porsche and Infiniti have naturally aspirated engines, while BMW has twin turbochargers, thanks to which it surpasses rivals in torque. As a result, the “Bavarian”, even despite its largest mass, looks the most convincing in overclocking. Infiniti is the lightest of the three. Having in the asset a vigorous seven-speed automatic (the "Germans" have six steps in the automatic transmission), it easily leaves the Porsche. And it practically does not lag behind BMW. On the contrary, when starting from a place, Infiniti even leaps forward a little and only then slowly gives way to the Bavarian crossover. Well, the lagging behind the Cayenne rivals with increasing speed becomes only more noticeable.

But if this can still be explained from the standpoint of logic or physics, then the loss of Porsche in the convenience of driving dynamics cannot be explained. The point is in the settings, and more specifically, in the non-linear nature of the response to pressing the accelerator. It seems to have already put pressure on the gas, but the acceleration is clearly not what I expected. Add a little more, and then the Cayenne rushes forward, so you have to upset it. Porsche also has something similar with brakes. This is especially striking at low speeds, when you need to carefully slow down. Smoothly press the pedal, and at first there is no reaction - as if "choosing" a free stroke. A little more, and a sharp nod follows. It's not so noticeable on the highway, but annoying in the city.

The rivals have nothing of the kind - there the control takes place at an intuitive level: as far as pressed, it went so far or slowed down so much. However, it cannot be ruled out that the described problems of the Cayenne are just the features of a particular car that we tested.

The seeking perfection of behavior that Porsche lacked so much was found in the BMW X6. It immediately became clear what kind of machine the same genius was working on this time - the gloomy German one. The Bavarian did everything so right that at times it got boring. Not in the sense that you start to yawn while driving, no. It was just that sometimes there was a feeling that this machine did not need you - it would do everything without you. And he will do it perfectly accurately, without mistakes. In other words, this is a kind of elusive feeling of detachment from driving, which is difficult to articulate, but you can only feel it on your own skin. This is probably why I liked the Infiniti FX50 better. Perky, lively and honest in his reactions to the controls, he behaved, maybe not as refined as the Bavarian crossover, but he remained clear, friendly and predictable in all driving situations.


From simple to complex

Okay, the picture was cleared up with the asphalt habits (although the study of some nuances was postponed until the field tests), the most interesting thing remained - the off-road part of the program. Moreover, it was already close to the "test" puddle. Of course, taking into account the parquet nature of off-road cars, they have outlined a soft one.

Now is the time to see what our test subjects are wearing. Infiniti and Porsche sport huge 21-inch wheels with low profile tires, and while the FX tires have a 45 percent profile, then the Cayenne has even less - only 35 percent. In such "slippers" it is not a shame to appear on the race track, but I do not want to get into the mud at all. The most modest, but also the most suitable (if this word is generally applicable to such tires) off-road shoe for BMW X6: landing diameter - 19 inches; profile - 50%. The tread pattern of all three is infinitely far from off-road, so in which case the hope is mainly for blockages (who have them) and electronics.

On the rolled grader, which took us further and further away from the asphalt familiar to cars, the whole three proved themselves more than worthy. Car suspensions coped well with moderate irregularities and allowed maintaining a sufficiently high speed, practically without losing comfort. Is that the showrooms became a little noisier. By the way, according to subjective feelings, the best sound insulation was found in the BMW X6, although Porsche and Infiniti are also not baked.

We turned onto a damp after a night rain and in some places a broken primer. I immediately had to slow down and choose the trajectory of movement much more carefully. But even here our heroes behaved nobly. This is exactly the level of off-road, when the capabilities of the all-wheel drive transmissions of our crossovers are already being used with might and main, and the intelligent suspension activates the appropriate mode - "dissolve" the shock absorbers and anti-roll bars. However, there is no slippage yet, and mechanical and electronic interlocks do not come into operation. Simply put, the normal working situation, which, in general, is designed for most SUVs with pseudo-permanent all-wheel drive. And of the three cars, this transmission option is on the BMW X6 and Infiniti FX. On the Porsche Cayenne, the all-wheel drive, as they say, is honest - with a central differential, and in stock it also has a forced lock and an air suspension with variable ground clearance. Then we went, albeit small, but already thoroughly soggy areas, where we already had to move with a slip. So we got close to the limit of passability. No, not cars yet, but only road tires.

Let them crawl awkwardly

The puddle, which I remember, had noticeably dried up since that picnic, but it was still quite capable of accepting our experimental subjects into its sticky embrace. Therefore, just in case, we removed the cables from the trunks and began to iron the alleged trap one by one, leaving a couple of cars on the bank of the "reservoir" as rescue tugs. The first to "sail" was the BMW X6. Having skidded and got dirty, the crossover crossed the puddle several times in different directions without any special complications, which caused disappointment in our ranks: "Well, we were in vain dragged here?"

The Porsche Cayenne was next to try its luck. And he "did not disappoint." On the next approach "landing" did happen! And although it happened almost on the edge of a puddle, it was not possible to get out in reverse. It is time to use the off-road arsenal that remained in stock. Turning the switches on the center tunnel, I turn on the lowering and the center differential lock. There was no rear locking - this is an optional thing, and it was not on our car. Well, what are they rich in ... Several more attempts to get out on their own also did not lead to the desired result. "Slippery" tires instantly broke into a slip, leaving the car motionless. There was hope for an evacuation. But the last attempt, undertaken rather to clear the conscience, was unexpectedly successful - they managed to catch the hook and jump out of the trap. Let's assume that we got out not without the help of a downshift and blocking, and therefore, it is not for nothing that the Porsche Cayenne carries with it an additional bunch of gears and other important pieces of iron.

The next victim - Infiniti FX - after the previous experiment was introduced into a puddle with great caution. But after a couple of laps, caution left me, which was followed by immediate retribution. Almost in the same place where the Cayenne was just sitting, Infiniti is no less “comfortable”. Only there is nothing to connect and block this time. Attempts to budge back or forward only led to the fact that the front end was completely chopped off. The clutch, transmitting torque to the wheels of the front axle, overheated and automatically disconnected, which was eloquently evidenced by the lamp on the dashboard. Well, now, for sure, evacuation! One of the colleagues had to tinker with the cable to the eyelet that was poorly placed on the Infiniti. After that BMW, without much effort, removed the person in distress from the "aquatic environment". Now the planned experiment to find out the off-road capabilities of the three crossovers could be considered successfully completed.

Summed up the theoretical basis

Debriefing was carried out at the training ground. To begin with, we carried out all the necessary measurements of the angles of patency and ground clearance. Checked the articulation of the suspension. Examined from below to assess security. All this only confirmed the already formed opinion about cars.

The best off-road "geometry" was found in the Porsche Cayenne, to which it owes in no small measure the adjustable air suspension. Together with the wider range of the transmission, which features a lowering row in the transfer case and a forced locking center differential, this gives the Cayenne off-road the undisputed lead in our trinity today.

The X6 almost looks like a coupe and is great on the road. But this in no way prevents him from feeling confident in the mud. And the plastic aerodynamic shields, which cover the entire underbody of the BMW, provide some kind of protection even off-road. Yes, and layout misses (so that some unit or unit clearly begs for a stump) were also not noticed. In general, in the X6 Bavarian engineers managed to really combine a sports coupe and an SUV.

Well, Infiniti is still mostly a passenger car. It is good for everyday trips or travel, but does not like off-road excursions. This becomes clear when you look at our pivot charts and table. FX lost to its competitors only in the off-road discipline, and in the rest it at least looked no worse or gained the most points. So if there is no need for off-roading, then the Japanese crossover is perhaps the best buy. And, undoubtedly, the most profitable among today's rivals. ORD

The same in grammar - everything is laid out on the shelves, but you will definitely stumble upon a slip of the tongue. BMW-X6 Bavarians dubbed the Sports Activity Coupe - literally translated "coupe for a sports and active lifestyle." The SUV is tall and resembles an elegant sports car. There are now gaps in the division of bodies by type. However, why now? Take a look at the "German" counterpart: the "Infiniti-FX45" has similar shapes and sizes, a powerful engine, four-wheel drive. The ideology is undoubtedly the same, but how were designers from different continents able to implement it?

GLASS, TIN, WOODEN

In ancient times, the teacher of the Russian language came up to the window and consistently pointed at the glass, the handle, the frame. This way the students memorized adjectives that did not obey the rule better. Sitting behind the wheel of the Infinity, I touched first-rate plastic, then rosewood trim, then aluminum lining, until I came across a foreign body. I did not expect to see hard plastic panels in the rich interior - the visor of the instruments and the center console seemed to be rearranged from another car, at an order of magnitude less price.

The sporting genes of the coupe are literally crushing. And so much so that driving is a bit cramped even for a not very well-fed driver. The right leg meets either the steering column shroud or the wide console. In addition, the latter pressed the seat belt buckle against the seat, which caused the belt bracket to be lengthened. Because of him, you feel a sense of elbow - in the literal sense.

An interesting solution: the steering wheel moves up and down with the instruments. I'm afraid not everyone will like this fun. For example, I quickly found a common language with the design, and a tall colleague complained that the steering wheel rim overlapped part of the speedometer and tachometer. Despite the rich set of adjustments, it is not possible to take a comfortable position right away. Even a person of average height feels with the shoulder blades where the short back of the seat ends.

It's time to get under way - the selector is in position ... I wonder if it got into "drive"? Blind red dots next to the lever just right to examine under a magnifying glass. Fortunately, I found a duplicate indication on the dashboard. I sit well, I look far away ... but only forward! A treacherous column or an open well will easily hide behind the high "windowsills" - while maneuvering in the parking lot, just right to look out of the window. And to take it back in a car, looking out the small window of the fifth door, is unsafe, it is safer to rely on mirrors and a video camera (by the way, it is even in the minimum configuration). "These cars are made to drive forward, and not spin in one place," interrupted a colleague when I complained about the visibility of the Infiniti.

Having burst out into the open, you really forget about the disadvantages of the FX45. The powerful "eight" rips off the two-ton colossus, like a feather. You fly, not noticing how the automatic gear clicks off. Confidence and tranquility reign inside, which is facilitated by solid dimensions and tenacious brakes. Infiniti stands securely on the road, and the informative steering and well-tuned suspensions precisely fulfill the driver's wishes. In corners, huge and wide tires firmly dig into the asphalt, and when their traction forces are depleted, the car begins to slide smoothly off the trajectory with all four wheels. Moreover, the electronics do not interfere if the driver returned the car on time to the right path. But if necessary, it acts clearly. True, for such diligent behavior you have to pay a small rent. On a mediocre surface with pits and waves in the cabin, it shakes, and the steering wheel walks in your hands as if it were alive.

And yet you get a good portion of pleasure from communicating with Infinity. I wonder if you can do more? I'm changing into a BMW ...

WRITTEN IN CAPITAL LETTERS

Despite the austere design, the X6's interior feels more comfortable. Perhaps this feeling is evoked by the two-tone design with harmonious interspersed with metal and wood. It does not press or rub anything here. For example, even in the lower part of the center console, there are soft inserts so that a bruise on the leg does not get in the corners. There is more space behind the wheel in the BMW, and the seat is very comfortable. Is the pillow short? Push the lever, and the center insert will extend far enough that even a basketball player's legs will not bend at the knees. Are your blades hanging in the air? This is how the upper backrest can be adjusted separately. And you do not expect at all, fingering, like on an accordion, numerous buttons, that the lateral support is ready to adjust to the figure. And the chair squeezes in an embrace not like a locksmith's vice, but rather like a faithful friend.

I got acquainted with an interesting innovation of the Bavarians - the original gear selector at the presentation of the second generation X5 (ZR, 2007, No. 2). It's funny, beautiful, but unusual. This time, I got used to the non-standard switching scheme for a long time, now and then glancing at the cunningly curved lever, but when I got used to it, I came to the conclusion: it’s convenient. Maneuvers in narrow passages will take even longer. The glazing line here is lower than in the Infinity, but still a lot goes overboard unnoticed. What is the review back? You don't have to strain in BMW, because ... you can't see anything at all! Well, the technique has already been mastered - I use mirrors (they are, perhaps, even more convenient than in FX) and, alas, graphic parking sensors instead of a rear view camera.

Amazing! X6 accelerates faster, and the maximum speed is higher, although under the hood there are two cylinders and a couple of dozen "horses" less, and the curb weight of the cars is almost the same. Obviously, the secret of agility is in perfectly matched gear ratios. Good machine on Infinity! But only until then, until you try BMW's new "six-shot weapon". Sometimes it seems that there are no switching at all, they are so soft and timely. The transmission not only understands the driver perfectly, but anticipates his actions.

Ochs and ahs smoothly move from one area to another - now I revel in masterfully honed handling. I confess, I even forgot for a while that I was sitting in a car with a ground clearance of more than 200 mm - with a good ride, the X6 changes direction without any hesitation and with minimal heels. In the turn, where I was forced to adjust the trajectory on Infiniti, the BMW fits in, pardon the banality, like a high-speed train. You only feel lateral acceleration, and then the car seems to be slightly twisted around the vertical axis by some force. I'm trying to add. And again everything happens without my participation, only out of the corner of my eye I manage to grab the light bulb that blinked on the dashboard: the stabilization system has worked.

If the X6 is capable of this in normal mode, what to expect from it, turning on the "sport"? But after the experience you experience a slight disappointment: nothing changes significantly. It seemed that the steering and suspension became a little more assembled, the engine responds more actively to the accelerator pedal. Perhaps this button has a psychological rather than physical effect.

The already middle-aged Infiniti (we regret that a new modification - FX50, sales of which will begin by the end of the year) did not arrive in time for the test - it is hard to compete with the newborn BMW. But I'll give it its due - even against the background of such a strong competitor, the FX45 looks decent. For the "Japanese" this is not a defeat, but rather an offensive loss, because the German company really raised the bar very high. I wonder who else will compete with the X6, will the class of tall all-wheel drive coupes develop at all? And by whose rules will it be played?

BY CAR!

It is not easy to get into a tall car. In the presented machines, the task is complicated by the fact that the doorway is small. To get into the driver's seat, even a person of average height has to bend his head and at the same time perform almost a split, lifting himself up on his left leg, and transferring his right to the salon. The floor in the BMW is slightly higher than in the Infinity, and the threshold is wider, so good muscle stretching will not interfere with the X6 driver, otherwise he will stain his pants. There is another danger in the FX - the far protruding edge of the dashboard, which is easy to knee on. The seat that moves back when the ignition is turned off will help to protect yourself a little from bruises and bumps (this function can be turned off).

As for the second row, it is easier to get into the Infinity: the opening is higher and the threshold is narrower. And it is more difficult to leave the "gallery", especially for the owners of large shoes - the stamping of the body gets in the way at the feet.

I took his X5 E53 Sport from his father and went to meet with a friend who has an FX35 Sport. I rode on the 35th and then on the same route on the X5.

In terms of overclocking dynamics, I can't say that FX is faster. The boxes seemed to be configured differently. Quite a sensitive gas pedal, which starts to spin the engine. In the X5, the car goes with a light pressure with a greater delay and less eagerness, but when you press the gas more and with a kickdown, the accelerations are comparable. (I did not check it with a stopwatch and I will not. 0.7 seconds to the 100th are not so critical for me)

Here the speed of the FX is "added" by the constant roar of the motor, which constantly lets you know that it is there and is ready to growl even harder and go faster.

The suspension on the X5 19 "is MUCH softer than the 20" FX Sport. Maybe on the 18s and elegance will be softer, but it seems that the difference is still not big.

The steering wheel on the 35th is slightly smaller, more "soft" in management. At the same time, the handling on the X5 is better, even having driven 10 trains on one and the other.

The brakes on the FX are not that complete GE, but the efficiency is much inferior to the fifth. Infiniti has gone 71 kilo miles before and only recently beats have appeared. Strongly felt during heavy braking. Not critical yet, but it strained me.

I liked the review a little more in FX. Somehow more dimensions are felt even though it drove less than a BMW.

From the little things of FH, cruise control in technology can keep a distance from the car, the seat moves off when the engine is turned off, for the convenience of getting out of the car. The door opens very softly, as if it had just been closed before.

I chose from the same. I chose X. He could compare very objectively, except for the resource - one friend had X5 2004 and FX35 2004, a companion RX330 2005. He drove all cars very meticulously, sometimes changing up to two times a day on purpose. The RX fell off almost immediately - it's very boring to drive, the rolls are huge, the steering is uninformative, the brakes are not so hot even for a pensioner ride. Although everything else is liquidity in the sale, reliability, and the relative novelty of the model is very good, but not mine. And by the number of them we have five times more than Xs and dates, already the impression that there are fewer Zhiguli, it's already boring!

BMW X5 is equipped with 3.0, 4.4, 4.6, 4.8 liter engines. Infiniti FX - usually 3.5 L. Both cars are all-wheel drive. Both models have automatic transmission. But four-wheel drive is different. In the "German" up to 62% of the power falls on the rear wheels, in the Infiniti FX the torque is concentrated on the rear wheels, and when they begin to slip, 50% of the moment is transferred to the front wheels.

The X5 behaves well both in urban conditions and off-road. The same cannot be said for the Infiniti FX, which only works well on hard roads. Infiniti FX is designed for active maneuvers on urban asphalt, off-road racing is not for it.

The acceleration time to hundreds of kilometers in BMW with a 4.8 liter engine is 6.8 seconds versus 7.1 seconds in Infiniti FX35. The rear suspension of the BMW X5 does not like overloads, so you can't carry a lot in the X5.

The dynamics of both models are based on volumetric powertrains, making them powerful "sports cars". FX with a 3.5-liter engine is much more dynamic than all X5 modifications and is second only to the 4.8-liter model.

The weak point of both models is that they are very sensitive to "left" and diluted fuel. On the X5, the fuel injectors may fail, and on the FX, the catalytic converter may break down over time, which may lead to engine breakdown. The plastic clamps of the "German" cooling system become less elastic during operation, and, due to loss of tightness, the engine may overheat. On the FX model, the throttle valve needs frequent cleaning, after which the electronic unit must be readjusted using a special device. As for breakdowns, now in specialized service stations, any breakdown will be professionally eliminated.

Both cars are similar in nature - driving them is a great pleasure.
