Until now, in Russia, air suspension on a cargo van was still perceived as an attribute of luxury trim levels. The stereotype of the high cost of pneumatics discourages those who want to buy it and those who reason - they say, we do not need excessive comfort, we will carry loads perfectly with springs. They think about the same when buying buses made of all-metal vans - not originally intended for transporting people. Whether the situation in this area is changing for the better - let's try to figure it out. Air suspension became widespread about 30-40 years ago in Europe and the USA. Its main advantage in comparison with a spring one is in its lower weight, low cost and durability of its consumables, and with it the truck has a better ride. For example, the long life of air bellows is determined not only by their own design and the quality of polyamide materials and rubber, but also by the design of the suspension guide vane. Its kinematics is such that the cylinders work only in compression. The number of cord layers (usually nylon and nylon) is two to four. The inner rubber layer is not only airtight, but also oil resistant. The outer layer resists the effects of sun rays, ozone, gasoline - neoprene is used for it. Thus, the pneumatic cylinder consists of several layers of rubberized cord fabric (frame) with an inner sealing and outer protective layers. The air suspension has a number of other important advantages over other elastic elements. For example, the adaptability of both the stiffness setting and the permissible axle load. Pneumatics makes it possible to quickly change the floor level over a wide range. Among the advantages and controllability - most air bags have a progressive characteristic, that is, the more they are compressed, the higher their rigidity becomes. Thus, the progressiveness of the characteristics of the pneumatic elements and the ability to quickly adjust the pressure in them directly from the vehicle interior provides the widest range of performance characteristics. With increased requirements for handling, pneumatic spring elements can be installed together with shock absorbers adapted to these conditions, as well as with more rigid anti-roll bars. The four-point systems (both front and rear axles on "air") allow to significantly reduce the roll of the car in turns. With this design, every driver, without replacing suspension components, can achieve that the same car is soft and comfortable, rigid and collected, or something in between. Also, pneumatics allows you to more fully use the carrying capacity of the car and even allows for light overload without compromising the comfort and safety of the driver and others. This property is relevant for both light and heavy commercial vehicles. In addition, trucks with air suspension break up the road surface less, so long-haul tractors are most often equipped with air bellows. For all that, the factory price of a truck with air suspension is higher than a car with a leaf spring, but it can be equipped with an already purchased truck.

Stanislav Bardetsky, General Director of BraBill LLC, St. Petersburg

The primary task for us last year was full quality certification in the GOST system of all imported VB-Airsuspension products based on the foreign certificates we have. We have carried out tests in scientific institutes of Russia of all our products, and now we can, on absolutely legal grounds, go out to vehicle manufacturers. Our main goal is Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen, but we would like brands such as Iveco, Fiat, Citroen and Ford to recommend their dealers to use our services. In Germany, when installing full pneumatics on the Sprinter 5-series, officially (with the permission of the manufacturer), the total mass of the car can be increased by 300 kg. This change is not unfounded, but will have a corresponding confirmation in their analogue of the Russian technical passport. Changes are made not only to the data sheet, but also to the base of the manufacturer, and any dealer, upon request, will see a complete set with an increased carrying capacity. In cargo transportation, this formality may not be so important, but in bus transportation - they fight for every official hundred kilograms, which will allow you to install another seat or transport another passenger while standing. This is especially true for international tourist transportation. As a rule, in addition to people, the minibus carries a hinged trunk with a load. And, for example, the Finns are sure to weigh such machines. For an overload of 100 kg, you can lose the right to carry out such activities.

Opinion

Igor Vlasyuk, Development Director of VB-Airsuspension in Russia, St. Petersburg

Now we can say with confidence - the demand for air suspension is growing and the reason here is in passengers who vote with a ruble for more comfortable transport. Those minibuses that were converted from all-metal vans (and there are most of them in Russia) are not well suited for carrying passengers and, above all, because of the rigid suspension. Its purpose in a truck is to withstand the declared load capacity. Therefore, not everyone wants to ride a hundred kilometers in a bus galloping on every bump. Loss of orders forces carriers to look for solutions, and they come to us with a question whether it is possible to change the suspension. Pneumatics provide not only comfort, but also safety, as it allows to solve a whole range of problems of the spring structure: to reduce the load on the suspension elements (when using auxiliary cylinders), to increase the level of comfort and maintain controllability with the maximum loaded vehicle (be it a bus or a van) by keeping the floor level in one position or raising the floor level when passing off-road sections. To solve these problems correctly, we provide the client with a full level of services. One of the main components is informing clients (there is a Dutch website, there is a Russian version of it). We have prepared Russian-language instructions for installing pneumatic systems, since often customers want to install themselves. This is possible in the case of auxiliary pneumatics, more complex structures, of course, are installed only by our specialists, or third-party companies that have been trained by us and received certificates.

What are we experiencing

There are not so many offers for the conversion of commercial vehicles to pneumatics in Russia as it might seem. As a rule, this type of work is associated with firms engaged, for example, in car repair activities. The small number of installed pneumatic kits does not allow them to receive a serious discount from the manufacturer. That is why the price of kits with installation makes carriers think about the expediency of purchasing them. It's another matter if the company is an official representative of a European manufacturer that provides a full-fledged guarantee - both for equipment and types of work. And installing dozens of suspensions. Today, the St. Petersburg firm BRABIL (BraBill) boasts such a relationship, which has a distribution contract with the Dutch VB-Airsuspension B.V., which is a supplier of air suspensions for the conveyors of Daimler AG, IVECO, Ford and others. In 2012 the firm plans to organize a full-fledged representative office in Russia. On the eve of its opening, the Dutch air suspension became interested in Kolomna Automobile Column 1417. To check whether the suspension really meets all the characteristics declared by the manufacturer, on November 10, 2011 in Kolomna, it was installed on buses operated both on urban (during peak hours) and on suburban routes ...

From the history

The company was founded in the Dutch city of Varsseveld in 1993 by Iginio Voorhorst and Eric Bruil. The name is formed from the first letters of the founders' surnames. At that time, a company called VB-techniek was producing car shock absorbers and additional axles for trucks. When VB-techniek turned 12.5 years old, it was renamed VB-Airsuspension B.V., while changing the model range as well - the main product was the air suspension for the best-selling light commercial vehicles in the segment with a gross weight of 1.5 to 7.5 tons. Over sixteen years of operation, the company has acquired nine European, two Asian and one Russian distributors, and the number of service partners has increased to 45. The staff has grown to 35 engineers and 40 auxiliary workers. The company has its own design, engineering, manufacturing and installation departments. Since 2009 it has been a supplier of pneumatic components for Daimler AG and Ford Europe. VB-Airsuspension is certified by: ISO 9001-2000, RDW, KBA, AQAP, UTAC, VCA and car manufacturers. VB-Airsuspension B.V. is officially recognized as a car manufacturer by the Rijksdienstvoorhet Wegverkeer / Department of Road Transport Holland and has the authority to manufacture vehicles under its own name.

Opinion

Sander Dusseldorp, Sales Manager VB-Airsuspension B.V., Warsseldorp, The Netherlands

The Russian automotive market today is one of the most dynamically developing ones. This fully applies to the increasing demand for our pneumatic systems. The level of sales of VB-Airsuspension products in Russia, especially the dynamics of its growth, allows us to draw unambiguous conclusions about the prospects of this market. In 2012, we plan to open our full-fledged representative office in Russia. We currently have three offices in Europe: in Germany, France and Great Britain. We believe that the creation of a representative office in your country will improve the service to our valued customers.

In manual mode

Two Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 515 CDIs were equipped with two main types of air suspension: one Sprinter - auxiliary (semi-pneumatic), the other - fully pneumatic. The first type is a hybrid between the vehicle's standard spring or leaf suspension and an air system installed in addition to the existing elastic elements. Its price is from 32,000 rubles. The function of such a suspension is to relieve some of the load from the standard spring by means of an additional air cylinder. Usually, the installation of the cylinders of the auxiliary system is carried out directly between the leaf spring (in the place of its contact with the rear axle of the car) and directly the body. This type of suspension allows you to manually increase the height of the body, level the body position at maximum load, and raise the body to overcome obstacles. Auxiliary suspensions of such types as VB-CoilAir and VB-SemiAir make it possible to independently (within specified limits) adjust the characteristics of the suspension. Both systems are basic and include all the necessary components for installation: air cylinders, brackets and supports, various connecting materials, protective materials, pneumatic valves, brake force regulators, connecting accessories and, of course, an installation guide. For example, if the spring element is supplemented with VB-CoilAir, in such vehicles the air cylinder is installed inside the coil spring. The VB-CoilAir system is single-chamber, which means that the left and right pneumatic cylinders are connected to each other and to one pneumatic valve. For vehicles with leaf springs (like the Sprinter), VB-SemiAir is used, in which case the pneumatic cylinders support the standard springs. The air suspension is divided into two unconnected circuits, each circuit with its own pneumatic pumping valve. The basic design can be supplemented with the VB-PCS pressure monitoring system, consisting of a compressor, pressure gauges, safety valves and a control panel. The scheme of work is simple - the control unit is installed in the cab within the reach of the driver. The block will allow you to change the pressure in the air bellows (in both at the same time, or only in one if the body is not evenly loaded) without leaving the cab. So that the driver does not overdo it by pumping the air and does not lift the chassis too high, a safety valve is provided that stops the compressor at the right time.

Expert

Oleg Pesochkin, deputy director for new equipment, aircraft number 1417, Kolomna

At one of the exhibitions, we drew attention to the VB-Airsuspension air suspension, which can be used to equip our Mercedes Sprinter minibuses. One of its advantages was the ease of installation (without any additional modifications to the basic vehicle design). After a short period of time, it was decided to take two sets into trial operation. The first set consists of two air bellows that perform auxiliary functions for the main leaf spring suspension. In addition to reducing the load on the springs, the cylinders must ensure the horizontal position of the body at the maximum load of the bus. This was supposed not only to extend the life of expensive springs, but also to ensure the safety and comfort of passengers during transportation, especially during rush hours. The second, more advanced VB-Airsuspension kit, completely replaces the factory spring suspension with an air suspension. After installing the kit, calibration is performed, and no matter how loaded the car is - the electronics (changing the pressure in the cylinders) will maintain the horizontal position of the body. In the first case, the pumping of the cylinders must be carried out by the driver, controlling the compressor from the cab. Both kits were installed in one day, and so far the air-suspension vehicles have covered 6-7 thousand kilometers. During this time, we received only positive feedback from the drivers - it became easier to operate the buses, while the smoothness of the ride increased. As stated by the manufacturer, the flatness of the bus floor remains at peak hours.

On the machine

The second, more advanced type of suspension, installed in Kolomna on Sprinter, is fully pneumatic. It includes models VB-NivoAir, VB-FullAir 2C, VB-FullAir 3C and VB-FullAir 4C, they differ from semi-pneumatic systems in that the function of elastic elements is performed only by air springs. These structures are more expensive - from 83,000 rubles. When installing such systems, all standard elastic and damping elements are dismantled. And due to fully automatic control, the safety of the car is increased, handling, stability and comfort are improved. For fully air suspension, a new electronic system VB-ASCU has been developed that automatically tracks and corrects vehicle height. Continuous monitoring and adjustment of the body height is carried out regardless of the load, in the longitudinal or transverse direction and regardless of the height of the center of gravity. This system is fully compatible with and interoperable with anti-lock braking systems, stability control and other control systems. A VB-SDLC (VB speed-dependent body height controller) is available as an option. The floor level adjuster lowers the vehicle by 20–40 mm at higher travel speeds, thus improving stability. When driving off-road, the body is lifted relative to the normal level. This contributes to greater stability of the vehicle movement and reduces the risk of errors in control.

The suspension control unit also includes the function of manual body height adjustment - this is one of the main standard features of the system. The floor level (higher or lower) can be changed during a stop. It is also possible to lower the vehicle to the lowest possible levels before entering the underground parking. The ECU adapter will only release the amount of air required to lower the vehicle. That is, when the chassis touches the buffer, the ECU stops bleeding. The pressure remaining in the air bellows contributes to the faster lifting of the vehicle. Assembly and commissioning (including full pneumatics) of VB-Airsuspension is performed in a few hours, without resorting to complex technological processes and without the use of special tools. No cutting or welding of load-bearing structures is required to weaken the strength of the chassis. The pneumatic system consists of brackets, Panhard rod (transverse reaction rod), shock absorbers, pneumatic components (air bellows, pistons, compressors, air dryers, air lines and valve block) that react to load. The list of equipment also includes electronic components (height sensors, electronic control unit, switches and dashboard wires). All metal components are coated with a corrosion inhibitor. Upon installation, the customer will receive a set of documents (detailed manual, warranty forms and instructions for the vehicle) required for operation. During operation - in order to avoid unscheduled visits to repair shops, electronic air suspension systems need to be serviced only every 100 thousand kilometers. In addition, most air suspension components do not require attention and are guaranteed for 2 years or 150 thousand kilometers.

Before starting work, disconnect the vehicle battery to prevent short circuits of electrical components. For instructions on disconnecting the battery, contact the vehicle manufacturer.

German manufacturers strive to constantly modernize the design of their cars, and therefore it is quite rare to repair the air suspension of the Mercedes W220. However, you should be aware of both the design of the suspension itself and the stages of repair when it will actually be needed.

1 Design features of the Mercedes W220

Air suspension not only simplifies machine control, but also provides additional safety. There is a possibility to quickly change the clearance. The control unit allows the maximum use of the lifting capacity, which helps to solve the stiffness problem. Mercedes has a suspension that allows you to choose the best operating mode. For example, for off-road and country roads, the softest is "comfort". In the city, the standard mode is suitable, and for a good highway - "sport". Also on the W220 it will not be difficult to drive onto the curb for parking, get out of the deep rut.

Instead of traditional springs and torsion bars, the air suspension is supplied with air cylinders. The compressor, in turn, will supply the required amount of air based on the mode. This allows a maximum ground clearance of 307 mm to be achieved, which means that depths of up to 600 mm can be overcome.

The air bellows in the car are designed for both the front and rear axles. They are controlled by the pneumatic system, which includes a compressor, a receiver (reservoir for compressed air) and a control unit. The size of the valves, the diameter of the air line, the volume of the receiver and air bellows are selected specifically for the W220 so that the compressor works at full capacity.

Typically, a Mercedes can travel at least 100 thousand kilometers before problems with air suspension arise and repairs are required. But here you should take into account the quality of the roads on which you have to drive. Therefore, it does not hurt to do a diagnostic examination every 50 thousand kilometers.

2 The main problems of air suspension

To avoid premature repair, you need to pay attention to typical problems that may arise:

  • The rear axle begins to drop, especially when the engine is off;
  • When starting, the opposite process occurs, while at the very beginning the rear axle rises, and then the front;
  • High speed leads to the fact that the front axle is lowered, and when braking it rises sharply;
  • The ground clearance of the W220 also constantly floats and is difficult to adjust, moreover, there is a slight skew.

Air suspension problems often begin with air leaks. This is due to the operation of the valves and connecting elements, the compressor ceases to function normally due to wear of the rings. In addition, anti-icing agents that are sprinkled on roads in winter fall on the air bellows and this leads to premature corrosion.

3 Replacing the air strut in the W220

Periodically, a situation arises when the replacement of pneumatic struts is required. Mercedes, as you know, has various air suspension modifications. For example, for the W220 Airmatic, you have to change the C-pillar more often and here it is important to follow the stages. However, this repair can be done in-house. This will require the following:

The upper part of this air suspension element is sealed with adhesive. Over time, it cracks and the air lock begins to let air through. The body is constantly lowered, so you have to make repairs with the replacement of the rack.

4 Elimination of possible malfunctions in the Mercedes W220

There are some other problems that affect the control unit to a lesser extent. More often, repairs concern air bellows and plugs, since corrosive substances, dirt and moisture constantly get into them. The receiver housing may even crack, or the connecting tube of the system may fray (it, like the cylinder, must be replaced). It is necessary to check the condition of the valves, as sometimes the coils burn out. Even a slight misalignment will require calibration and special equipment will be required here. But the compressor, on the contrary, fails much less often.

Mercedes requires periodic computer diagnostic examination. Therefore, serious repairs or when a small problem arises for a Mercedes, unlike competing cars, is not always necessary. In addition, the W220 air suspension has good air struts, which are automatically adjusted by the control unit. Everything will depend on the road surface and conditions, while nothing prevents you from switching to manual control (for this you just need to press the switch located on the dashboard).

The car has four damping modes. They are designed to monitor the condition of the coating and provide smooth running and control. For example, at a speed of 140 km / h, the clearance will automatically decrease to 15 cm, and at 70 km / h the level will be restored.

Diagnostics and prevention will prevent many problems from occurring, and timely replacement of faulty elements of this system will allow you to drive on any route absolutely calmly. Minor repairs can be performed on your own, but if you are faced with more serious problems, then it is better to trust the professionals - the Mercedes W220 deserves it.

X Do you still think that car diagnostics is difficult?

If you are reading these lines, then you have an interest in doing something yourself in the car and really savebecause you already know that:

  • STO lomat big money for simple computer diagnostics
  • To find out the error, you need to go to the specialists
  • Simple wrenches work in the services, but you can't find a good specialist

And of course you are tired of throwing money down the drain, and there is no question of driving around the service station all the time, then you need a simple ROADGID S6 Pro AUTOSCANNER that connects to any car and through a regular smartphone you will always find a problem, extinguish CHECK and not bad save !!!

We have tested this scanner ourselves on different machines. and it showed excellent results, now we recommend it to EVERYONE! So that you do not fall for the Chinese counterfeit, we publish here a link to the official AutoScanner website.

Hello everyone!

On w221, the air suspension is installed as standard on all models, without exception. The system consists of a compressor, a valve block and 4 pneumatic struts in which there is also a part filled with oil. Most often, the mechanical part, filled with this very oil, dies and the shock absorber knocks.

I noticed that the car has been rising somehow slowly for a long time. And, in about 1.5 days, it drops if the car is stationary.

Many, by the way, think that kakraul (!) Is so bad. But the dealer told me right away that all the Mercedes are lowered. Some are slower and some are faster. At the same time, if after starting the engine the suspension returns (rises) to its normal position, then, they say, "This is normal. Absolutely normal."))

And then, one fine day, she did not rise. Well, okay, I thought, and parked the car and drove a Porsche. But, damn it, it began to get colder and tired of stumbling about Mercedes (gyyy), I decided that the time had come!

The price of a new compressor for Avito is on average 28 thousand. It changes quite easily. Will be replaced at any service in 30 minutes. Well, or you can change it yourself in the same time if you have the desire and the tool. And many will say fuuu ... myself .... But! Do not forget that when w221 lies on the belly, you cannot move on it and you need a tow truck! And this same tow truck can not always come to the place where the suspension died. I know a case when people changed the compressor right in the courtyard of a residential building, since the tow truck could not squeeze through 5 dozen cars parked on the curbs. Therefore, all w221 owners will find it useful to read this video.

I have a Mercedes diagnostic computer SD-Connect, which immediately told me that the compressor was not working, and the diagnostic test showed that it did not create any pressure.

By the way, the same Avito is full of ads from services that offer to change your deceased compressor for a restored one from 12-16 thousand rubles. And so, a person from the very first service where I called (to evacuate cars to them) named Valery (God bless him) told me: - Check the fuse. (!)

If you open the hood, then the box with fuses and relay is located on the right side of the windshield. It has 4 screws. We shoot and (sorry I didn't take a photo) in the case of my S350, the desired fuse is located on the edge of the akurat closest to the radiator grill in the middle. The 40A fuse is orange and very large. Located between two fuses of the same size, but different in color.

The dealer costs 218 rubles.

And yes, the pneuma came to life !!

But the fuses just don't burn. Moreover, such amperage. It means that something wrong in the motor itself begins to happen. This can happen if the motor was very hard .... And why can it be hard for him? And then (and 99% of the owners do not even know about it), I remembered the existence of the air suspension compressor filter. The filter is clogged, the motor is spinning, there is little air flow, it works longer than usual, strains, strains, heats up, starts to consume more current than it should be and the fuse breaks. Is this option realistic? More than!

I must say right away that there is also a relay in the same box. In 90% of cases, it sticks, which leads to constant and non-stop compressor operation. And then there will be either bang-bang (and you will hear it and it's good if you are wearing a diaper) with the replacement of the valve block or the same fuse to begin with.

The dealer's filter cost 882 rubles.

Looks like that

In the nearest service it was changed for me within 15 minutes while I went for coffee. The price of the issue is 1000 rubles. It is located in the same place as the compressor. It is more convenient to remove the front lower bumper protection on the lift, and on the ground - the front right wheel and wheel arch liner.

After the replacement, the machine began to rise noticeably faster, and the compressor intervals became shorter.

I was not lazy and took the old filter home and, having cut it with an engraver, looked inside.

Dealer Parts:

It took me 15 minutes to write this report, while I am sure that it will save tens of thousands of rubles for more than one owner who will certainly read it. Do not forget to share useful and interesting articles. Do good!))

  • Elimination of noise and vibration of the suspension and bump stops during overload (air suspension completely eliminates the situation when a commercial vehicle lies on the bumpers)
  • The ability to install air suspension on tired springs (after installing the air suspension, the springs requiring replacement will last a long time)
  • Correct position of the body under any load (always horizontal position of the body of a commercial vehicle, regardless of the load, and this is the correct operation of the head light and a decrease in braking distance)
  • Reducing the roll and rocking of the car (the air suspension does not allow the car to roll on the overloaded side, and is always in a horizontal position)
  • Increase in comfort for the driver and passengers (a significant increase in comfort when driving cars on bad and uneven roads, both for the driver and for passengers (on passenger minibuses)
  • Increase in profit from transportation (air suspension - air spring is the ability to carry 1.5 times more cargo per 1 trip + savings on replacement of springs and traffic police fines for overload
  • Possibility to control the overhang of the car during loading and unloading (adjustment of the rear clearance to level the floor of the booth of a commercial vehicle with the level of the ramp floor for convenient loading)
  • High service life of the air suspension (the air suspension does not require any additional maintenance, and effectively works for 5 - 6 years under any operating conditions, be it frost, dirt, salt and reagents. Working pressure up to 8 atmospheres)
  • Increase in comfort and softness possible
  • The "Goat" effect is removed

Additional air suspension control options:

  • It is possible to install a control system with adjustment from the passenger compartment

Therefore, this kit does not require changes to the vehicle title. Air spring for Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 309; 311; 313; 315; 319; 324; 209, Volkswagen Crafter 35 is placed between the frame and the springs on the special mounting plates included in the kit. The upper mounting plate is placed on the frame in the standard holes. The bottom mounting plate is placed on the bridge.

The principle of air suspension operation:

When filling the pneumatic bellows with compressed air, the load is redistributed from the springs to the pneumatic elements. Further, when the car is moving along irregularities, the air in the pneumatic air bags is compressed even more, which will compensate for vibrations and swinging. Suspension behavior can be changed depending on the pressure in the air bags.

Recommendations for installing system components and maintenance periods:

  • When installing the equipment, you must make sure that the parts of the suspension, brake system and other elements of the car will not damage the pneumatic elements and supply lines.
  • After assembly, check the system for air leaks (using soapy water)
  • Retest for leaks 100 km after installation

Attention! The minimum operating pressure in the cushions is 1 bar! Periodic cleaning of pneumatic elements significantly reduces the likelihood of their failure from adhering abrasives (sand, stones, dirt). The error in measurements of the air bag is not more than 5%. If the pressure is exceeded over 8 bar, the parameters of the diameter and height will not change (cushion without load). In the course of long-term operation, the parameters of the outer diameter of the pillow may increase by 10%.

The technical parameters of the product, as well as illustrations, are for informational purposes only. The manufacturer of the product reserves the right to deviate from the declared parameters without prior notice.

Air Leak Kit Diagnostics (Diagnostic Areas and Leak Corrective Actions):

With the correct assembly of the air suspension kit, the permissible pressure drop from the air bellows is 1 bar for 72 hours (GOST provision)

If the system pressure drops by large values \u200b\u200bor for shorter periods, it is worthwhile to diagnose leaks of threaded connections, the connection of the air tube on the pressure gauge (if any), as well as the tightness of the air bags themselves.

Leak diagnostic tool - soapy water. If a leak is found, eliminate it by tightening the threaded connection with minimal effort, or disassemble and assemble the assembly using a sealing material (FUM tape, thread, thread sealant).

"Mercedes Vito" is a very popular minivan in Russia. This car is in demand primarily due to its powerful and reliable engines, as well as a comfortable suspension. By default, Vito is fitted with coil springs at the front and rear. As an option, the manufacturer could complete the minivan with an air suspension. But there are very few such modifications in Russia. Most of them already have suspension problems. But what if you want to get a minivan on pneuma, which initially came with clamps? There is only one way out. This is a Mercedes Vito. It is possible to do this with your own hands. What does the air suspension do, how does it work, and what feedback does it get? Read about all this and not only in our today's article.

Characteristic

So what is pneuma? This is a type of suspension that implies the presence of air cylinders.

They are elastic elements in the chassis and allow you to change the ground clearance depending on the volume of filled air. Cylinders are installed instead of springs, and in our case, coil springs.

Why is she so popular?

First of all, such a suspension is popular due to its energy intensity. There are many opinions about this, but no matter how many levers are used in the chassis, air cylinders absorb impacts softer than springs (and there is no need to talk about springs). What are the other advantages of such a system? If it is a cargo "Vito", the installation of such a suspension will increase the carrying capacity of the machine. So, when fully loaded, the car will not sag as before.

Design

The main component of any pneuma is air cylinders. Their other name is pneumatic springs. It is these parts that play the role of elastic elements in the suspension. The cylinders take on the entire shock load. In addition, the car body itself is held on them. These air springs consist of dense multi-layer rubber and are able to withstand enormous pressure. There is a metal spacer on the top and bottom of the pillow, thanks to which the part is attached to the body and the suspension arms. This is a kind of platform for placing air springs. The cylinders themselves are cylindrical, but they can change their height. Due to this, the vehicle's clearance is adjusted.

Compressor. As noted in the reviews, it may not be included in the Vito air suspension kit. The installation of pump nipples is proposed as a budget analogue. What does a compressor give? This element pumps up the cylinders. The unit is connected to the standard vehicle electrical system. Also, the compressor has its own "cut-off". When a certain pressure in the receivers is reached (usually ten atmospheres), it automatically turns off.

What are receivers? These are hollow metal containers that contain compressed air. As noted in the reviews, a five-liter receiver is enough for a Mercedes Vito. It is not too big and it is enough for several cycles of raising and lowering the body. The receiver and the air suspension compressor of the Mercedes Vito can be connected together. Often, manufacturers supply ready-made compressors with a receiver. It is very comfortable. If you are installing air suspension on a Mercedes Vito with your own hands, you do not need to think about where and how to arrange these elements. It is enough to fix everything in the cabin (for example, under one of the seats).

The air suspension also includes a variety of hoses, fittings, and solenoid valves. The latter allow air to move through the system at the right time. And all this is connected to one control panel. Usually it is fixed near the driver's seat.

What do the owners say?

As noted in the reviews, the Vito air suspension kit should be purchased for several reasons. The first is a smooth ride. With this system, you can make the suspension travel even smoother without changing the rubber profile. The second reason is good handling. No matter how much luggage you carry, the car will be perfectly handled when cornering. The suspension can be made hard and soft - just adjust the pressure in the circuit. The third reason is the ability to adjust the clearance. For some, it helps to overcome snow drifts more easily, while others put on such a suspension to attract attention. On fully deflated pillows and beautiful disks, such a car looks very attractive.

At any time, the machine can be "dropped" on the ground and returned to the transport position. The process of lifting the air springs does not take more than ten seconds. But this applies only to those systems where there is a compressor and a receiver, they say in the reviews. The air suspension kit for Vito with a nipple and without a receiver forces the owner to carry a booster pump with him. Otherwise, there is no way to change the chassis configuration. As they say in the reviews, it is better to take the air suspension kit for Vito with a compressor. Having overpaid for it once, you will not suffer with pumping the system through the nipple, especially in winter.

Varieties

The air suspension is divided into several more types. So, there are:

  • Single-circuit system. This is the simplest and cheapest suspension scheme. In this case, the two pillows are controlled from a single valve. A single-circuit system is installed only on the rear axle. This is the most popular option among Vito owners. The car will not "goat" on the road when empty, while it is well controlled with a full load.
  • Double-circuit. Such a system is installed on both axles of the vehicle. What is the peculiarity of such a scheme? Here it is somewhat different. On Vito, cylinders are placed for each wheel separately. But they are independently controlled in pairs. The driver can raise or lower separately only two front or two rear airbags. The cost of such a system is about 2 times higher than that of the previous one.
  • Four-circuit. This is the most complicated and expensive air suspension system on Vito. Its device assumes the presence of a complex control panel with a whole set of solenoid valves. Air supply is carried out directly from the receiver or compressor. But if in the previous case two pillows were inflated at once, then here it is possible to control each air spring individually. The cost of a four-circuit system is 50 percent higher than the previous one. But as noted in the reviews, the air suspension on Vito of such a plan will be superfluous. A dual-circuit system is sufficient for comfortable control.

The cost

The price of the most budgetary air suspension for Vito is 34 thousand rubles. This is a single-circuit system with nipple pumping, without a receiver and compressor. The kit includes:

  • Plastic tubes.
  • Fitting.
  • Nipple adapters.
  • Fittings.
  • Air cylinders in the amount of two pieces.
  • Rear axle mounting kit.

Additionally, it is proposed to install a compressor with solenoid valves and a receiver. This option costs about 25 thousand rubles. But as noted in the reviews, such a set of air suspension for Vito Mercedes will be the most optimal.

As for the two-circuit system, it will be more expensive by 30 thousand rubles excluding the receiver and compressor. Well, the price of a four-circuit suspension reaches a hundred thousand or more, depending on the brand of cylinders and other components.

Specifications

Below we will consider what air suspension characteristics on Vito have:

  • The diameter of the air springs is 11 centimeters.
  • The working pressure range is from three to eight atmospheres.
  • The minimum allowable pressure is one atmosphere. If you operate the system with deflated cushions, they will quickly become unusable, even if the air springs are made of hard and strong rubber.
  • The permissible lifting force is one and a half tons per one pneumatic element at a pressure of 10 atmospheres.

Suspension kit usually comes with a one-year manufacturer's warranty.

How is the air suspension installed on Vito? Process description

This procedure can be done both independently and with the help of the hands of specialists. The main difference between the air suspension installation on the Mercedes Benz Vito is that the pillows are the main elastic element, and not an auxiliary one, as on the Sprinter and other commercial vehicles. Here the air spring is installed in place of the factory coil springs. And so that the part fits snugly in the cup, special metal spacers are provided. The reader can see how the finished air suspension on the Mercedes Vito looks in the photo below.

Thus, the cylinders are mounted between the arm and the body side member. It is not worthwhile to additionally strengthen the structure. Everything is installed at the factory. So the first step is to put the Mercedes-Benz Vito on a lift or jack it up on a level surface. It is advisable to unscrew the lower shock absorber mount. This is necessary in order to remove the old spring. If it somehow does not give in, a special spring puller should be used. At the next stage, you can start installing the air suspension on the Mercedes Vito. At the top and bottom, the metal spacer is secured with a heavy-duty bolt. It is necessary to strictly align the pillow so that there are no distortions. This is the only way the suspension will work properly on Mercedes-Benz Vito.

Then you can start laying the air lines. Please note that for safety reasons, they must not cross the brake pipes. The lines can be fastened with plastic ties. Then the outputs should be connected to the solenoid valves and the compressor. You also need to lay the wiring to the control panel, which will be located in the cabin.

How is the air suspension installed on the Mercedes-Benz Vito next?

Then you need to connect the compressor to the vehicle network. After that, you can start the system. The compressor will pump air into the receiver, after which the cylinders will be filled with oxygen. Depending on whether the solenoid valve is open or closed, we lower or raise the suspension.

Installation without receiver and compressor

When choosing a budget system, you need to decide on the location of the swap nipples. They can be installed anywhere, such as under the passenger seat or at the bottom of the glove compartment. These nipples have the same shape as on a regular wheel. And the pumping will be done through a 12-volt pump powered by a cigarette lighter. The installation algorithm is identical. First, the old springs are removed, then the cylinders are mounted and bolted on both sides. Don't forget about the shock absorber.

We must fix it back, otherwise the buildup will be colossal. After that, the air line is laid to the passenger compartment. Using adapters and a T-shaped fitting, we connect both lines to a common terminal. So we will have a single nipple that simultaneously and evenly pumps two pillows. This completes the installation of the air suspension. You can start operating.

Before lowering the vehicle from a lift or jack, check the tightness of the system. To do this, the cylinders should be pumped up to ten atmospheres and a soap solution should be prepared. Using a brush, apply it to important joints. If bubbles are present, tighten the fittings even more. And so on until such breakdowns are completely absent in the system.

Service

In order for the new suspension to last as long as possible, it needs periodic maintenance. On the eve of winter, it is recommended to wash off the dirt from the cylinders and treat the rubber with silicone grease. So the material will not be so hard at sub-zero temperatures and will not collapse from friction with itself.

It is the dirt that causes the etching of the pillows. It works like an abrasive, producing small damages, cracks and tears. Over time, they grow into holes through which air seeps out under pressure.

Conclusion

So, we have found out what air suspension is and what are the advantages of installing it on a Mercedes Vito. As you can see, this is a very useful acquisition. But you need to choose the right system. Do not overpay when buying a four-circuit system for one hundred thousand. But you don't need to economize too much, otherwise one day you will simply get tired of pumping up the cylinders through the nipple. The best option is a single-circuit system with a complete set, which includes cylinders, valves, a receiver and a compressor.
