Instructions for installing a turbo on a VAZ. How to do it all right?

Through the efforts of specialists, we decided to write an instruction for beginners on how to independently install a turbine on a VAZ car for a dredge.

The very first and probably the most important question is where to start?

First of all, having bought a car (especially if used), I advise you to pay attention to its condition. If you understand this or want to get to know the machine and its structure better, I advise you to disassemble it to the ground.
Only when we take everything down to the body can we see the scale of the problem.

The biggest problem we can face is rust.
Most often, the bottom, fenders, thresholds rust heavily. For "chisels" the problematic place is also "TV".

You must understand that the car produced by VAZ has a very thin metal, and such metal is not designed for high loads (the metal will simply tear), and rusty metal will "die" even earlier than usual, which is very dangerous for us and those around us.
Therefore, we take welding machine, fresh iron and replace all rotten metal with fresh, or drive the car to a service station.

We replace almost all the metal of the engine compartment with more durable iron.
Fixed all the jambs for metal? Is the body like the factory one? Well done! Let's continue.

Now you need to put the car in order and make it move at least in stock. We change the wiring, tidy up the engine (or immediately change it to "gear"), gearbox, brakes.
This is our starting point in touring.

If you returned your car to its original state, and you still have a desire to turbocharger? Let's continue.

Which motors are easier to turbo?

The simplest thing is to take a VAZ 16-valve engine. It is easy to repair and tune, and what is most important for us, it can give us power suitable for motorsport without huge costs, efforts and car alterations.
The 16 valve is initially more powerful than any VAZ engine.

Consider other VAZ engines.
- Old carburetor motors cannot be turbocharged.
- An 8-valve injector might work, but we are building a racing car and every horsepower is important to us.
- 16 valve engine is our choice for dredge!

Considering the option of an engine from a foreign car, you must understand that it will cost us a fairly large amount, and will also require large alterations. Ino, the engine is more complex in the device than the VAZ-ovsky and without a master you are unlikely to understand it.
Our choice is "shesnar".

What is needed to build a turbo engine?

For people who want to get 200+ hp. it is desirable to extract the "Kalinovsky" block, since it is higher (+ 2.3mm).
A dozen will do, but we are building a car for racing and each horse is a victory, so it needs a "Kalinovsky" crankshaft with a crank diameter of 75.6mm.

We select forged pistons and grind a recess for the desired compression ratio (it is better to contact a specialist or buy in specialized stores).

Turbocharger

A small one works at low and medium speeds, and at high speeds it stops, therefore a large compressor is the opposite.

  • TD04L - Subaru. 3k rpm boost. 200-250 HP
  • TD05 - Mitsubishi. 3k rpm boost. 250-300 HP
  • IHI VF10 - the turbine is much larger than the Subarov one. 250+ hp
  • IHI VF22 - drag turbine. The largest of the series.
  • Garrett turbines are just as good, but they are expensive and you have to wait until your order arrives.
  • There are also many Chinese turbines on our market. The quality is weak, but the price doesn't bite.
    T3, T4 - 300+ hp

Turbo engine cooling

Everything is simple here. We need a new copper two-row radiator (2110), since it is much more efficient than any VAZ radiator.

Intercooler.

A very large intercooler can be a problem of the so-called "turbo lag". Turbo lag is how long we have to wait for boost pressure after opening the throttle. And the little one will not have time to cool the air.

Blow-off valve

An important part of the turbo engine, its function is to discharge some of the compressed air after closing the throttle valve. Otherwise, excess pressure can break all rubber connections.
There are a huge number of options on the market, from stylish ala lamborghini to almost homemade.

Westgate valve

It is needed in order to let a part of the compressed air bypass the turbine to maintain a given pressure in the turbine system.
There are also a large number of performances.

Fuel system for the VAZ turbo engine.

The fuel system must have a return line and a fuel pressure regulator installed in the rail.
It is permissible to use an external fuel pressure regulator, but it must be connected with a vacuum hose to the throttle receiver, because to overcome the overpressure in the throttle space by the injectors, the pressure in the rail must also increase.

Fuel pump.
The stock does not fit; it has too little performance. We take either from the Volga or Walbro - 255 l / h.

Nozzles.
Stock again will not work, we need 350cc. DEKA 630cc injectors are suitable for us, for motors with 200 hp. BOSH is also suitable.

Everything is installed without any problems.
You can do everything yourself (except perhaps for the firmware and settings).
If you have no time / laziness / do not want to mess around, then you can give everything to the service.
There are no complicated parts and connections in what we need to get, everything can be done by ourselves. Engine mount parts are usually included with the part. And if you have to buy in addition, then it will not be a big deal.

Exhaust system for the VAZ turbo engine.

The exhaust system releases exhaust gases from the engine. This is a very important part, we don't want to change the engine ahead of time, do we?

The temperature of the gases leaving the engine is enormous, about 900 degrees, at the exit from the cylinder.
In the case of turbocharging, these exhaust gases must not only be removed, but directed to the turbine wheel for promotion.

All of you have probably heard of the "spider". "Spider 4-2-1" is a system in which gases are fed into four pipes, then collected into two, and then into one. The system is efficient at medium speeds, a good choice for driving through the streets and rare "bullets" from traffic lights.
"Spider 4-1" is a system when gases from 4 pipes are immediately combined into one. Effective for high revs. Our choice.

Suspension for turbo VAZ.

Suspension affects handling. Therefore, for a car planning to overtake everyone and everywhere it is necessary to modify it. I advise you to modify the suspension thinking about your own safety, because if something falls off at full speed due to old age, the car can become uncontrollable, which can lead to an accident. Consider the suspension options.

1) Soft suspension:
Pros: smoothes pits, ride smoothly and comfortably
Cons: poor maneuverability, roll when cornering, drifts.

2) Rigid suspension:
Pros: enters corners like a glove, maneuverability, instantly reacts to steering.
Cons: it will be tough on the bumps!

Clutch and transmission for turbo vaza

The choice of clutch must be approached thoroughly. The clutch must be selected based on the power and torque of the engine.
The stock clutch is designed for a quiet ride! We have several options:

a) budget: basket with increased downforce (there are different options).
This option holds the driven disc rigidly and increases the effort on the pedal (swing your legs differently, you will lose a split second at the start)
b) no budget: ceramics. It can withstand the stress of motorsport. Our choice.

Gearbox for turbo VAZ

A stock box is a box designed for quiet movement, standing in traffic jams and mixing mud in the country. The stock box has a very short first, only up to 40 km / h. The short one means we have to waste time and torque when switching to the second.

To solve this problem, we must choose a series of gear ratios. The optimal choice for turbo engines 103 row.
The main pair - reduces the revolutions transmitted from the engine to the wheels by about 4 times. The higher the gear ratio, the better the acceleration and the lower the maximum speed. Our choice is 3.7 or 3.9

Tuning the VAZ turbo engine

All this is done with the help of a "wastegate", the less pressure is released into the atmosphere, the more pressure in the system.
There are several ways to adjust the pressure, the best of which is the boost controller.
You need it to adjust the pressure you need straight from the cabin. It works simply, does not allow the safety valve on the manifold to release pressure, this contributes to a temporary increase in pressure.

Firmware
The standard program of the control unit requires significant adjustments.
A properly tuned turbo engine will be more powerful, smoother and less greedy in terms of oil and fuel.
The safest option is to find a specialist in your city (or in a neighboring one) who does this not "the second day" in his life.
You don't want to cycle the motor every two days, do you? Therefore, the firmware is a crucial moment.

What other improvements are needed?

The stock engine is not designed for racing loads, so most of the components and spare parts are replaced with more efficient and durable ones. This applies to pistons, rings, fingers and connecting rods ...

Also, a prerequisite is the completion of the cylinder head channels, we need to make the timing system more efficient.
40% of success depends on the "head".
We must remember that we are building a 70-horsepower production car into a 200-horsepower race car. Stock and life-killing components are not designed for this, so you must understand that when the project is ready, there will be nothing left in the car from the drain, you will have to go through the whole car to the bolt.

How to refuel a turbo engine?

You need 95 or 98 gasoline.
98 is preferable for fans of "gas to the floor". 92 it is impossible in any case, ditch the turbine ahead of schedule and not getting a decent result from the speed, because low quality gasoline increases the combustion temperature, which negatively affects the turbine blades and the engine as a whole.

What oil to use?

In a 16-valve engine, there are hydraulic lifters and for their best performance, you need to choose synthetics. Yes, it is not a budget, but we demand better results from a car? So for this it is necessary to give her the best.

Frequent mistakes when turbocharging.

Defective or low quality parts, people are paying twice to save money.

What power can you count on with a turbo engine?
Power can be obtained from 200 to 400 hp. if rough and on a 16-valve.
The torque will be somewhere from 250 to 400 Nm with a little. It all depends on the parts and motor settings.

I wish you all a successful turbo tuning !!!
Do not forget about your own and the safety of other road users.

Turbo kit for Lada 4x4 (VAZ 21213 - 21214)

A set of parts for installing a turbo boost on VAZ 21213 - 21214 cars. Designed for cars with an 8-valve injection engine. The installation allows you to increase the power of the car up to 120 horsepower. The declared power is achieved by installing a TD04HL-15T turbocharger. Boost pressure 0.5 bar.

A set of parts for installing a turbo boost on Chevrolet Niva cars Designed for cars with an 8-valve VAZ 2123 injection engine. The declared power is achieved by installing a TD04L turbocharger. Boost pressure up to 0.5 bar.

Installing a turbine is the most common way to improve the power characteristics of VAZ cars. The atmospheric revision of the engine with a cylinder head boring, a sports exhaust system and sports shafts will come out more budgetary, but it is limited to a limit of 120-130 hp. Correct turbocharging allows you to remove more than 200 horses from the car.
When choosing between turbocharging and aspirated, proceed from the tasks assigned to the car. Refinement of the naturally aspirated engine allows you not to get lost in the city traffic among more powerful foreign cars. Turbo is best for racing.

In addition, it is almost impossible to legalize a turbo engine at a VAZ in Russia.

Installing a turbine on any car begins with a thorough study of the materiel. You can't just go to the store and buy a ready-made kit. And even if it is possible, the system will still have to be improved.

Turbocharged engine VAZ 2114

Consider the following as you undertake this task:

  1. A number of VAZ 2114 runoff nodes are unsuitable for a car with a power of over 150 hp. Without re-equipping the suspension and brakes, installing larger wheels with a turbo engine, it will not work.
  2. Modification of foreign cars is somewhat easier if the tuned model has “older” brothers with turbo engines. Tuning usually comes down to finding, buying and fitting ready-made factory units. It is more difficult with cars produced in Togliatti - turbines are not installed at VAZ. Fortunately, there are tuning studios in major cities that develop and manufacture tuning parts. True, their products are mostly unlicensed, so there will be problems with legalizing the changes.
  3. Choosing the right turbine is the key to successful turbo tuning. Before realizing your dream, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with short descriptions turbines used to refine the VAZ.

Turbines for VAZ cars

There are many options for installing a turbine on the 2114 model. In theory, you can adapt anything, but the following models are best suited for an 8-valve engine:

  • Garret 1752;
  • Mitsubishi TD04 (installed on cars Mitsubishi lancer EVO, Subaru Impreza WRX, some other models);
  • IHI VF10 (this model was used for the 1st generation Subaru Legacy cars), as an option VF11-20 (stock for the 2nd generation Legacy);

The list can be expanded with dozens of positions, including more powerful turbines TD05, TD06, VF23-30.

Moreover, if there is not enough money for new equipment, it is not difficult to find used whales in decent condition due to the transition of their owners to more powerful equipment.

Turbo kit Garret 1752

Garret Turbo Kit 1752

Turbines from Garrett are consistently among the most popular among VAZ owners.

Among the reasons for this:

  • sold as a ready-made kit, there is no need to assemble individual parts for spare parts at auto disassembly;
  • relatively low cost (a new set will cost 30-35 thousand, used ones can be found in the range from 15 to 25 thousand);
  • without any special modifications, it is possible to remove the boost up to 0.5 bar from the car, increase the power up to 120-130 hp. and torque up to 180-200 Nm;
  • with additional modifications of the boost system, you can spin up to 1 bar, power - up to 170-200 hp, and torque - up to 240 Nm.

Recently, many owners of VAZ cars are interested in how to assemble a turbo engine that is optimal for a city. In this regard, we decided to provide you with specific recommendations on how to assemble it most competently and at no extra cost.

The basis of our future turbo engine will be the currently very popular VAZ sixteen-valve with an index of 21126 from the Lada-Priora car. But our guide can be considered universal, because following it, you can assemble a turbo engine on any other base. The key point is not so much the specifics individual engines, how much is the approach itself and the volume of their future transformations.

And so, the first step is to disassemble the engine and assess its condition. If the engine is "with good mileage", then the cylinder block is bored for the next oversize. When assembling the block, so-called turbo pistons are used. The most widespread and well-proven option is turbo-pistons, modified from the factory Niva pistons. They are distinguished by an enlarged (up to 20 cubic cm) combustion chamber and counterbores for a sixteen-valve cylinder head. Standard "Priorovsky" connecting rods are also not suitable for a turbocharged engine. Their best replacement will be standard ones. But the crankshaft remains "native" - \u200b\u200b75.6 mm. As a result, we get an engine with the same displacement (1.6L), but with a compression ratio reduced to 7.6: 1. Such configurations of the "bottom" are actively used in the construction of turbo engines with a capacity of up to 400 hp.

The next step is to decide on the turbine itself. In our opinion, the TD04L turbocharger (standard for the Subaru Impreza WRX) is the most suitable for everyday use, it is characterized by early pickup and a fairly wide operating range - an excellent choice for driving in city conditions. The maximum power is about 250 hp, which, among other things, will allow to demonstrate decent results in amateur Drag-racing competitions. If you want more power, then choose the TD05 turbocharger or else. The selected turbine will require an appropriate turbo collector. Also, it is necessary to supply oil to the turbine and implement oil drain, organize the supply and drain of the coolant. It is very important to use silicone reinforced antifreeze lines. It is the reinforcement of these nodes that will allow you to forever forget about possible problems with them.

Together with the injectors, we also change the fuel pump, which also has a higher performance. For example, it is characterized by the fact that it can withstand the loads of the most powerful engines that can be found on most racing cars.

In addition to the fuel supply, modify the engine management system itself. In particular, it is better not to use a traditional mass air flow sensor (MAF), it is usually replaced by an absolute pressure (MAP) and (DTV) sensor. Thus, you will ensure yourself the reliability and the ability to work with all state-of-the-art programs that control the operation of the motor.

When selecting an MAP sensor, focus on the model whose upper range is closest to performance. In other words, if your plans are to use a pressure in the turbo motor of approximately one bar, then it is inappropriate to use it with an upper value of 3 bar, otherwise you will not be able to fine tune the turbo motor. Solving the problem of choosing the best options for sensors and injectors, it would be most rational to use the advice of a master who will be engaged in setting up the assembled turbo engine.

Another crucial moment is selection camshafts... The difficulty is that their choice is individual for a particular turbo engine. So, for a simple project, standard camshafts are enough. But they will have to be replaced if power growth is planned in the uppermost range. Our advice is to install camshafts designed specifically for turbo engines. These allow the motor to work perfectly, both in the urban cycle and in competition conditions.

The assembly of the turbo engine also touches on the issues of the cylinder head. So, for city driving, you can limit yourself to a standard block head. But if you plan to squeeze out of the engine to the maximum, and the car is preparing to participate in drag racing, then an installation with enlarged channels and valves is advisable. This will allow you to get more power and move the torque shelf to higher revs.

The return of the turbo engine will be maximum with an increase in the diameter of the outlet line, starting from the downpipe itself to the end can. Remember that by narrowing the line at least in one place, you will reduce its entire diameter. For engines with power from 200 HP It is considered optimal to use an exhaust system with a pipe diameter of 60 mm. As a turnkey solution, you can safely use a resonator, a bend and a universal stainless steel muffler from Russian manufacturer ... These elements of the exhaust system have proven themselves well and are often used by us in practice.

A clutch for a turbo engine, in particular a city one, is a particularly important point. We recommend using a set with a sintered plate with a damper. Of course, the use of such a clutch in urban traffic jams brings some inconvenience, but it does an excellent job of transmitting engine torque up to 300 hp.

From the foregoing, an important conclusion can be drawn that converting a standard engine into a turbo engine is much easier, cheaper and more profitable than working with a model that has undergone full atmospheric tuning, because almost all engine elements are replaced. Carefully select components, while assembling, pay attention to every detail, do not skimp on the qualified tuning of the assembled turbo engine - this is what guarantees a high resource and power characteristics of your engine.

Almost all motorists today are trying to somehow distinguish their car from the stream, to make the car special. Improving driving performance is done almost immediately after acquisition. Often on the roads you can find a turbo VAZ. With the engines of "AvtoVAZ" you can significantly increase the engine power. But without a turbine, but with the installation of tuned components, it will not be possible to obtain a significant increase in power. Let's see how to assemble a turbocharged engine for a VAZ.

What you need to know about supercharging

Turbocharging is the forced injection of air into the combustion chambers by creating a high pressure zone at the inlet of the intake tract. When the driver of the car presses the pedal and the throttle valve opens, significantly more air will enter than if it were supplied at atmospheric pressure. As the amount of oxygen increases, the carburetor or injector also increases the amount of fuel. Due to this, the power of the motor increases.

The combustion chamber has a fixed size, and its volume is constant. On a standard engine, only a limited amount of the fuel mixture is placed in it. To increase power, more fuel must be placed in the cylinder. This is done by creating high pressure, which will compress the mixture. Then it will take up less space. That's what turbocharging is for.

Benefits for VAZ engines

It has a lot of advantages. The mechanism has a fairly low weight. Turbines are often versatile - they can be adjusted to fit any engine, carburetor or other power system. The kit can be installed on tuned motors, and installation will not interfere with further improvements. Engines of any size can be turbocharged.

Where to begin?

Not every car is suitable for tuning. It is important to pay attention to the condition of the car. Better to take the car apart to the ground. The main problem is corrosion. You need to understand that the metal on cars from AvtoVAZ is thin enough, and high loads are contraindicated for it. It takes a lot of stress and the rusty metal will literally tear.

You should start by replacing the metal in engine compartment to a more powerful one. When all the body faults are repaired, you can continue tuning further. If the car was bought specifically for tuning, then the first step is to make it move in stock condition. Next, they change the wiring, bring the engine to good condition, or change it to a sixteen-valve one. Also carry out an audit brake system and transmissions.

This is the first point from which the turbocharging instruction begins. When the iron has returned to ideal, close to factory condition, you can continue further. Moreover, we already know enough about turbocharging equipment.

Suitable engines

The easiest way is to make a VAZ turbo based on a 16-valve unit. It differs in a fairly simple design and due to this, it is just as easy to tune and maintain. And most importantly, it is ideal for motorsport, as it can deliver sufficient power at a minimum cost.

Old engines equipped with a carburetor power system practically do not lend themselves to such tuning. But some craftsmen still build a VAZ-2106 turbo. 8-valve injection engines would be suitable for civilian use, but in motorsport every horsepower is needed and important. Experts in auto tuning recommend using 16-valve VAZ engines.

What is needed to build a turbocharged engine?

For those who want to get 200+ power, it is best to get the engine block from Lada Kalina. You can also use a block from a VAZ-2110, however, when building a car for motorsport, every little thing is important. The motor also needs a crankshaft from Kalina, where the crank has a diameter of 75.6 mm. It is better to purchase forged pistons for a VAZ turbo, having previously carved a recess on them for the desired compression ratio.

Turbocharger

This supercharger is made as a separate unit, which is driven by a drive belt.

The latter will take torque from the crankshaft. The compressor has nothing to do with the lubrication or cooling system of the motor. To relieve excess pressure, which sometimes occurs in the intake tract in some operating modes, an additional valve is connected to the air. Often, two types of compressors are used for car tuning - centrifugal and screw. The first is made in the form of a snail with an impeller inside. The pressure is obtained by the simultaneous rotation of two shafts equipped with paddles.

Centrifugal compressors are used for self-tuning cars. They are more affordable, have small dimensions, easy to install. Due to the fact that the performance characteristics are limited by the engine speed, the engine can deliver no more than 0.7 bar of pressure. The compressor can raise the motor power from 15% to 30% at maximum speed up to 40 thousand per minute. This is a pretty serious indicator.

Among the advantages of compressors are high durability and reliability, low requirements for the condition of the motor, ease of installation, availability. During the operation of the turbocharger, pickup occurs at speeds of three or more. The motor immediately responds to pressing the pedal - in this case, there is no so-called "turbo lag", which happens when installing other superchargers. However, at high engine speeds (more than five thousand), the increase in power is almost imperceptible.

Gas turbine

Among the features of the turbine, one can single out its rotation speed. It can reach 200 thousand rpm, while the pressure can reach up to 2 bar. This turbine is capable of increasing the engine power up to 50 percent. Turbine bearings rotate at high speeds and require lubrication. The system is connected to the internal combustion engine lubrication system. The turbine needs a certain amount of time to pick up the required speed. Therefore, it will start working only after three thousand revolutions. If you try to sharply depress the accelerator pedal low revs crankshaft, the exhaust gas pressure will be too low for the unit to operate. Failures can be felt. This phenomenon is called "turbo lag".

We select a turbocharger

If you install a small element, then it will work at low and medium crankshaft speeds. At high altitudes, such a compressor will not function. With a large machine, everything is exactly the opposite. The most commonly used models are TD04L from Subaru, TD05 - Mitsubishi, Garett turbines, Chinese turbines of dubious quality - T3 and T4.

Cooling

With the cooling of the VAZ turbo, everything is simple. Install double-row radiators from the VAZ-2110, since they are much more productive. You can also install an intercooler. If it is too large, it can cause problems.

The small one does not have the proper performance and simply will not have time to cool the air supplied to the cylinders.

Blow-off valve

This is an important part of the design. Its main task is to discharge some of the air after the throttle valve is closed. If this valve is not there, then pressure can literally break all connections. There are a lot of these valves on the market - from industrial to hand-made.

Westgate valve

This valve is necessary to pass some of the air past the turbine. This maintains the set pressure in the system.

Ready sets

To create a turbo motor, it is not at all necessary to assemble a set of necessary equipment. Today you can purchase ready-made sets. They are designed for both 16-valve engines and 8-valve injection engines.

8-valve engine set

Turbo kit for 8-valve engine has the following specifications. It is capable of generating pressures up to 0.5 bar. With this kit, you can increase the power to 120 horsepower and the torque to 190 Nm. The installation of this kit does not in any way affect the resource of the power unit. Installation is quite simple, and all the parts from the kit are hinged. For installation, you do not need to modify the engine in any way.

The turbo kit includes:

  • Steel manifold.
  • Turbocharger.
  • Gaskets.
  • Oil supply hose.
  • Coolant supply system.
  • Overpressure relief valve.
  • Connecting elements.
  • Fasteners and other details.

The set for 16-valve units is completely identical. Also similar are his specifications... On sale you can find a turbo kit for an 8-valve engine with a capacity of up to 250 horsepower. It uses a turbocharger with a pressure of 1 bar.

Mounting

It must be remembered that equipping an engine with a turbocharging system is a rather lengthy process. Although the kit makers say that it is possible to do without upgrading the engine, this is not entirely true. Where to begin? Of course, with the purchase of the necessary spare parts and the preparation of the motor. It is necessary to replace pistons, rings, cylinder head gasket, fuel regulator, throttle, as well as pipes and other parts. All these mechanisms must be as reliable as possible.

You also need to remember that the construction of a powerful car can vary significantly depending on the turbine model. The instruction will be fairly average. For example, in order to build a VAZ-2106 turbo, you first need to replace the engine.

It is necessary to install a 16-valve injection unit. The first step is to prepare the engine. The motor is disassembled, the cylinders, crankshaft, connecting rods, oil pump are checked. If necessary, grind the block. Pistons should be purchased after the cylinders have been prepared.

Then collect attachments... At this stage, the injectors are installed, the fuel pump is changed. Then the receiver, the exhaust manifold are installed and the turbine is used. All steel elements are also mounted. And finally, the last step is customization. The maximum power, torque and other characteristics of the motor will depend on how professionally and correctly the adjustment is made. If all the operations for the preparation and assembly of the system can be done by hand, then it is better to turn to professionals for tuning (especially if the VAZ turbo is on gas). By the way, now there is a lot of controversy over whether it is possible to put HBO on the "turbo". Experts say that the octane number of such a mixture is more than 102. Therefore, gas will not harm the operation of such a power unit.
