A year after the loud debut, the equally successful KIA Rio is published, structurally very similar to its older brother. It is assembled at the same plant in St. Petersburg as Hyundai Solaris.

In truth, these two cars differ in body design, trim levels and their prices. The distinctive features of these competing relatives are clearly visible in the equipment. If Solaris can be assembled as a constructor, then with RIO (here packages of options prevail) such a "trick" will not work. At the exit, Solaris will come out a little cheaper with equal options, although at the start of sales the opposite effect was observed, RIO was more expensive, but it was also better equipped (air conditioning, bumpers, mirrors in color - basic equipment).

Time goes by and marketers constantly have to change something. But the interior of Rio looks more austere, expensive (in the top-end configuration the "torpedo" is sheathed with eco-leather), the tactile sensations (ergonomics) are higher, and the body has a more solid design.

As you can see, the differences are mainly bodywork, you see it is so. Everyone will choose for himself the exterior that he prefers. It seems to me that here you have to choose according to the sensations, take a ride in one, then in another car, where it will be "like at home" - and choose one. If we talk about the first releases of Rio, then it was already produced with the initial modifications to the suspension (this is the most serious "sore" Solaris 2010). It's about the second generation Kia Rio; in fact, this is the brother of Hyundai Vern ( ZR, 2012, No. 5 ). Let's remind: the rather good, in general, "Vernu" was most of all let down by the extremely unreliable electric power steering. The problem has not been solved to this day, and the company's representative office is silent.

There are fewer complaints about Rio in terms of the amplifier: the model was equipped with a proven power steering before restyling, and after that with an EUR, but not the same as that of Verna. Hyundai uses capricious resistive torque sensors, while Kia uses optical ones. Still not without a fly in the ointment: many owners complained about extraneous knocks in the steering mechanism. There was even a revocable campaign, in which dealers changed plastic bushings if tightening the spring-loaded rack nuts did not help. The right bushing was loosened more often, but at the same time the left one was also changed: if the mechanism is disassembled, and the bushings are relatively cheap, such a decision is logical.

Often knocks were made by the lower cardan joint of the steering shaft - it was loose on the splines. This connection was simply packed with additional grease.

Steering tips serve 60-70 thousand km, thrust - twice or three times longer. Moreover, the rods are replaced separately from the steering mechanism, which is now less common.

LUCKY

The reliability of Hyundai-Kia cars depends to a large extent on which of the models was the pioneer when introducing new components and assemblies or fine-tuning old ones. “Rio”, one might say, was lucky: perhaps only the starter fell from the raw on his shoulders.

LET'S GET TO KNOW

Always remember about the wrong location of the climate control knob, designed to select the temperature: one wrong move - and the knee breaks the circuit board of the device. It is specially made openwork in order to exclude injuries in the event of an accident, but it breaks easily even with a slight push on the handle.

In frosty weather, the starter often fails. A trip to the dealer in a tow truck usually does not help - during the paperwork, the car warms up in the workshop and the starter comes to life. A poll organized on the forum revealed an interesting detail: the defect became widespread since the end of 2010. It turned out that the starter manufacturer had changed the design on August 27, 2010 and assigned a different catalog number to the unit. i got it in my mouth, and dealers do not repair starters. At best, they change under warranty. And at the same time, it is noted that in 90% of cases the problem is solved by an elementary tightening and lubrication of the power terminals of the retractor relay.

DOESN'T PORT BEARS

All motors are time-tested, once developed by Mitsubishi and have proven themselves well at the Getz ( ZR, 2007, No. 11 ), "Matrix" ( 2008, № 4 ), "Elantre" ( 2009, № 6 ). With the advent of the electric booster, the power steering pump disappeared and the drive of the attached units changed. With the timing, everything is as before: the toothed belt drives the exhaust camshaft, and the intake camshaft is connected to it by a separate chain at the rear of the unit (in the region of the fourth cylinder). We change the timing belt after 60 thousand km (according to the new regulations after 90 thousand km), and the chain is best at 120 thousand. Although it is often enough for up to 180 thousand km. When buying a used car, if you are not sure of its real mileage, it is better to replace the roller belt preventively.

Numerous control unit firmwares have not made the engines less demanding on fuel quality. But they are tolerant of the increased resin content - the valves work without problems. True, dealers recommend flushing the nozzles without dismantling every 30–45 thousand km (this removes carbon deposits from the valves and their guides). After such an injection, we must change the suppositories. High-voltage wires usually serve 80-100 thousand km.

The engine radiator is less tenacious. Under the influence of reagents, it begins to leak along the lower left rolling after 60 thousand km (about 10% of cases). Watch the level of antifreeze: you miss it - the engine can get irreversible heat stroke!

A corrugation is installed in the exhaust system, which connects the manifold with the resonator. It lives for a long time, unlike its counterpart on the Getz, since it is further removed from the engine and its additional protection. But if protection engine compartment jammed and touches the corrugation, it will probably gnaw a hole in it. Fresh air infiltrates confuses the oxygen sensor, and it fools the engine control unit. Lights up Check Engine, and gasoline consumption rises sharply.

SOMEONE'S Slippers

"Rio" put together the details of the suspensions from their half-brothers and sisters: something from the "Getz", something from the "Elantra". From "Verna" I received rear shock absorbers leaking to 40 thousand kilometers; they also rattle. The knocks can be dealt with by placing foam rings under the boot. This is a very economical car, not only in terms of fuel consumption, but also maintenance, which is ideally combined with the budget cost of the base configuration. The car is highly equipped, so the buyer gets much more than he expects for a reasonable price.

There are, of course, disadvantages in the Kia Rio, but they are not significant, so you should not be afraid that the car will smash your dreams. The downsides of the 2016 Kia Rio start with noise isolation. Today it has become an integral part of a comfortable ride, especially when it comes to metropolitan areas. In Kia Rio, this parameter is not ideal, but it is easy to fix if you make additional insulation.

The second drawback is the plastic crankcase protection. If you constantly move on roads with uneven terrain, you can damage this protection and then problems cannot be avoided. The problem is also easily eliminated, as with noise insulation, it is enough just to put metal covers. Any service will do the job in a couple of hours.

In fact, this flaw is common to most budget cars.

Since we need a car of the third generation, the year of production of the car will be no later than 2015. And due to the fact that we pretend to be very rich people, we will not look at cars of the first years of production (2011 and 2012). I note that we do this deliberately: the earliest cars had some drawbacks, which they later tried to get rid of. For example, remember one common problem with early cars: a creaking steering shaft with a fixed cardan joint. At first it was changed under warranty, then the hinge was generally replaced with a sliding one. And some elements of interior decoration of early Rio do not cause delight, which is why now many of their salons resemble taxi cabins.

We will not be picky about motors. There are only two of them, and both are more like plans for Friday evening than something serious from the world. internal combustion... We'll be fine with the 1.4-liter G4FA and the sort of “big” 1.6-liter G4FD. Both of them are not bad, but what you will need to look at in them - you will see below.

We can quite afford a car with automatic transmission, especially since neither the old four-speed A4AF3, nor the newer "six-speed" A6GF1 raises questions in the first hundred and fifty thousand kilometers of run. Although, of course, the important thing here is how they were operated and maintained, especially the second box, which is more demanding on the purity of the oil.

We are looking for cars as usual - on classified sites. There are many such cars, so there won't be any problems.

Problems will begin later, when it will be necessary to compromise: there are still no ideal cars, so you have to come to terms with something. For example, here's the first car. At first, due to the atypically high mileage (yes, thanks to the Russian ingenuity praised by the people, we are all accustomed to the fact that from 5 years to 20 mileage in ads around and about 100 thousand kilometers) I did not want to watch it, but then that's all -So looked. Oddly enough, it turned out to be a very good option, which once again confirms the thesis that, against the background of optimized runs and grandmother's tales from outbidding, you can sometimes find an honest car for "little" money.

But it's cheap!

The most attractive thing about this car is its price. It costs only 405 thousand, so almost a hundred thousand can be pledged to bring it to life after the purchase (if there is such a desire). True, he has the simplest equipment, mechanical box gears and a 1.4 liter engine. And the mileage is great - 186 thousand kilometers. Let's see if there is any point in such a purchase.

Unfortunately, the Kia paintwork is far from the strongest side of the manufacturer. But in our particular case, at least it pleases that the painting is factory. In general, in Rio, the layer thickness should not exceed 130 microns, although sometimes there are cars with a double factory paint (in this case, almost a double layer of paintwork will be on all body parts and door openings) or with individual parts repainted at the dealer. The latter is a reason to check the car for participation in an accident. Although stories with repainting of parts due to damage during transportation are encountered, this is more an accident than a common practice. Our thickness is approximately the same everywhere, from 115 to 130 microns, so there is no reason for nagging. True, there is a small chip on the front wing. It will need to be removed immediately: chips on the "Koreans" rust quickly. But in general, all paintwork defects are insignificant and were obtained exclusively during operation.


But let's open the doors and see the salon.


Here, the mileage is visible in all its glory. Not too high-quality plastic (more precisely, just bad plastic) scratches very easily, and in our car it looks very ugly in places. The door handles and the plastic on the dashboard around the glove box are creepy. But what to demand from a budget car with a range of under 200 thousand? The steering wheel stands out against the general background. Perhaps it was altered under warranty - it peeled off quickly, and Kia's warranty engineers did not refuse to eliminate the defect.


The seats don't look very fresh either. They have not only already frayed skin, but also noticeable deformation. In general, the Kia Rio salon will not hide the real mileage. I don’t know if it’s good or bad.

Now we open the hood. There are no complaints here. The engine compartment is clean and gives the impression that the car was looked after better than the girlfriend during the candy-bouquet period of the relationship. Well, or washed it before our arrival.


And the engine sounds good, it was not possible to get any criminal sounds from it. But this is what can be seen with the naked eye. If we really wanted to buy this car, we would equip the eye with an endoscope. The fact is that Koreans are very fond of making weak catalysts, which by such a run are already beginning to crumble well. Ceramic chips enter the inlet and quickly eat up the piston group. So it would not be superfluous to inspect the cylinder walls on a Kia with a run. However, on this run it is already possible to be afraid of coked rings, although in comparison with the repair of the cylinder block this is not such a global problem.

Well, do not forget that at a high mileage (it is impossible to say which one, but roughly, say, from 300 thousand) you can expect a real "capital", especially if the catalyst was not changed in time or the chain stretching was not noticed. And the overhaul of a motor with an aluminum block is a rather expensive procedure, especially by the standards of budget cars. It's a pity: the rest of the car turned out to be very good and quite adequate in cost. Well, let's try to look for something newer: money is not a problem, there are 500 thousand.

Minotaur Labyrinth

Let's put aside the typical Russian craving for sedans and look at the car in the hatchback body. Yes, it is not as prestigious as a sedan (no one will doubt that the Rio sedan is prestigious), but practical. Moreover, they were not seen in the taxi. True, sometimes we come across carsharing ... But the car suits us: 2014, it costs only 470 thousand. The mileage, however, is also rather big - 90 thousand, but still it is two times less than that of the previous version.


Even from a distance it is clear that something is wrong with the car. I would generally advise not to be afraid of your feelings: if it seems that the car is crooked, it probably is. We cannot evaluate by eye the correctness of the body geometry, but we can notice some differences in gaps, painting and some other details on a subconscious level. I do not insist on the truth of these words, but I advise you to listen to them.


So, before us is a black handsome man. True, some uneven. Side lighting allows you to take a good look at the shagreens. On the front left fender, it differs from the shagreen on the driver's door. Let's check with a thickness gauge just in case. There is already more than 400 microns, and on the right front wing, the thickness of the paintwork reaches 544 microns. There is clearly some putty here. Taking into account the fact that the front bumper is uneven, and all the gaps between it and the wings are crooked, it can be assumed that the youth of this car was difficult. But it's hardly worth talking about a strong frontal impact: the headlights are native, no one changed the radiators. Although the troubles do not end there.

We notice that the expansion tank is empty. This is definitely bad: maybe the engine has overheated, or maybe the antifreeze is leaving somewhere. It's good if it flows to the ground and not to oil. However, if it went into oil, we would have noticed it on the oil filler cap.


The oil level in the power steering tank is also at a minimum. And this is also not entirely correct.


And one more small surprise we find quite suddenly in ... the wiring. Another (non-standard) power cable leaves the battery terminal in an unknown direction.


Where could he go? I think the answer is obvious: there must be a subwoofer. Therefore, we open the trunk, raise the flooring and see a bunch of wires brought out (the owner, apparently, dragged the "sub" from here).


What's bad about it? Honestly, there are not many really responsible owners among those who put such music (even if it is of high quality) into the car. And the level of liquids just screams about it. “Tynts-tynts” in the trunk is, of course, cool, but a normal level of antifreeze is much more important (although a minimum standing at the mark is also far from a sentence). Another significant disadvantage is the increased load on the generator. And finally, not all music installers (as well as alarms) can do this well. Often after their intervention electrical circuit the car turns into the labyrinth of the Minotaur, through which a sad and angry electrician will wander in the event of a breakdown.

And then there was also the rubber seal of the wiring from the engine compartment did not even bother to put in place.


In addition, there are “untreated” chips on the body, which are about to begin to rust, the back seat is burned by a cigarette, and everything that can be dirtied is dirty. A broken windshield completes the picture.

Parking "by ear"

Most interesting car just worth our maximum amount - 500 thousand. What are they offering us?


Firstly, this car has a 1.6 liter engine. Secondly, the automatic transmission (even a four-speed one, but quite reliable - the heritage of Mitsubishi). And thirdly, the mileage is a little over 30 thousand kilometers. Yes, the 2013 car. Maybe the mileage is twisted? Let's see the docs first. The owner of the car was alone, and the service book was filled in exemplary. Exactly every year she was driven to the dealer for maintenance, but the interval between maintenance in kilometers is more delightful: in the first year, they drove only five thousand kilometers by car, and in some subsequent years they could not drive these five. Looking ahead, I will note that this run can only be confirmed by an absolutely exemplary interior: even the fabric of the seats and the steering wheel that is prone to wear look new. Luck? Nearly.


The whole picture is spoiled by the poor quality of the paintwork, multiplied by the driving habits of the owner of the car. He clearly parked by ear: all body parts with traces of abrasions. Here the doors were also opened into the cars standing nearby in the parking lot, and they drove over the curbs, and parked in the snowdrifts until the bumpers crackled.

Unfortunately, this is Rio's weak point, and even if you don't drive on the highway and “catch” chips from stones, the edge of the glass rusts quickly. They do not always look there, but in vain. Two small spots may be just the beginning of a large corrosion. But here at least there are no repainted elements, which could be pleasing, if not for the number of contact marks on them. Maybe it would be better to paint something already.


They didn't look under the hood for a long time. There are no complaints about the operation of the motor, all fluids are at a level, traces of an accident could not be found either. But there is a lot of dirt.


I don't even know if it is possible to buy this car. Technically, it is most likely good (it can be said for sure only after computer diagnostics and examination on a lift), but numerous injuries sustained through the fault of, apparently, not a very experienced driver, must somehow be treated. And it's urgent. But there are so many of them that you will have to paint everything - well, or at least all four doors and front fenders (for example, scratches on the plastic body kit are trifles). It will also be necessary to remove the rust on the edge of the windshield (which, by the way, will also have to be replaced due to the crack). The amount of investments will turn out to be significant, which will not please even taking into account the low mileage.

You can, of course, bargain, but there are a lot of Rio on sale, so if the seller's greed is stronger than the paintwork, it is better to look for another car.

Dealer combo

We decided to look at another option from an authorized dealer who sells used cars. It cost 516 thousand rubles, but it was very curious what the officials would offer us. Moreover, we were already ready to go a little beyond the price range, but find an uncompromising option.

The photo is a good option, the mileage is 86 thousand kilometers, almost the maximum grade. Let's go.


So what does the dealer offer us? And the dealer invites us to play the game “Guess what happened to the car”. And we decide to accept the rules of the game. Moreover, everything here is so obvious that even a "teapot" can figure it out.

In short, even a self-respecting reseller will not buy this car. This is the case when the car does not seem to be crooked, but in fact it is crooked. That only there is not a closing driver's door. Against this background, a large number of scratches, chips and multi-colored elements simply fade away.


We open the hood and we are not even surprised… Here is a complete set that just screams about a head-on collision: a crumpled shock absorber cup, broken battery terminals, an obscenely attached spar tip, covered with sealant somehow at the seams. In theory, it should have been cut and replaced. But, apparently, they decided not to bother and simply blinded from what was.

It looks like the blow was so strong that the engine shifted to the engine shield, which left marks on.


And of course, looking into the salon, we saw a "shot" airbag. Thank you, we don't need such "good".


For the sake of interest, we decided to check the car on the bases, since the state of the interior (in particular, the steering wheel worn almost to the holes) and the body transparently hinted at a heavily twisted mileage and generally using the car as a taxi. And here we were not mistaken. The car was indeed listed in a company that provided services for passenger transportation... This is not surprising - these models, also in white, are often found in taxis. Only the prices for such cars in normal condition are on average 100 thousand cheaper.

The third generation Kia Rio is not a capricious car. But this does not mean that she has no weak points at all. First of all, probably, you need to look at the body (I think everyone has already understood this). But that's not all.

We must not forget about the motor either. Choosing a Kia (and Hyundai) with mileage, you need to at least get to the service and check the compression and timing drive. After 100 thousand kilometers of run, you can find cars with stretched chains, so checking the phases will not be superfluous. Especially if there are some more or less alarming sounds when starting the engine.

If the mileage has passed the one hundred thousandth mark, then you need to check the condition of the catalyst, and at the same time - the lambda sensors and the entire exhaust. True, not everyone can do this on their own. And here AUTOMAMA maybe, and for this we use the most modern tools that our partners have in specialized service stations. After our diagnostics, buyers can not be afraid of either the Minotaur maze, or an inexperienced owner who parks by ear, or a combo from a dealer.
